That’s what people don’t realize about professional athletes. He didn’t seem very special at the pro level, but was the absolute man locally. I had a friend that played Major League Baseball as a pitcher. No one knows who he is, but locally the dude was by FAR the best athlete in every sport he ever tried. It’s an entirely different level of athlete if people are willing to pay you a LOT of money just to watch you play.

I watched Ainge play in high school. He was phenomenal. I was there the night at the Pit when he made a full-court shot just before halftime.

It pays to be the King. He was the face of the NBA, a cash cow and Advertiser's dream (Gatorade, Wheaties, Nike, Coca Cola, McDonald's, Chevrolet, and Hanes). The league and corporations protected their investment. Sure, he got a lot of calls, but the guy earned respect and was MONEY damn near every game of his career. There isn't a player from that era who doesn't say he was the absolute best.
