Fair warning: When you go all in, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. My point is: aim to win, but be prepared to lose. One more thing: if you wanna go all in, in the way JP means in this speech, the early you do it in your life, the better. Because if things go south, you have time to recover. Good luck.

Very true. You are damned if you and damned if you don't, but you can ALWAYS pick the best route to make your proper sacrifice. So like Jordan Peterson is implying, it is much better to go all in to become a Doctor in order to save lives than to become a Garbage truck driver picking up trash (not that there is anything wrong with that, but you get the point). The higher your aim, the higher your goal, and the higher your values, the better for yourself and everyone around you. It is as simple as that, though oftentimes hard to live by. You have rivals, enemies, competitors, pressure from peers, friends, and family, all around you pointing their fingers at you, judging you. You must learn to detach yourself from ALL of that and trust 100% in yourself and your own actions. Let the results speak for themselves and never let anybody else really know what you are up to or what you are doing. You only got one shot in this life, so make the best out of it. Keep your hands and nose clean and stay on the righteous path towards honor and glory. Nothing in life feels better than striving to overcome obstacles and achieving your goals. Trust me on this one!

I would probably define the "highest good" as the striving for bettering your own life, in the sense that, you're making the conscious decision to live in a way in which you're doing as many things that are good for you as you possibly can. And lets not get this wrong, doing things that are good for you are hard for a lot of people, because "good for you" does not equal "something you enjoy doing/get pleasure from". In my eyes, doing things that are good for you involve having a job and working towards your goals, working on your physical, mental, and spiritual health, improving upon your God given talents, challenging yourself intellectually, learning, and spending time with family and friends. Certainly many of these things would not be considered neither easy nor something that we largely enjoy, yet they are undoubtably good for us. And once we start doing whats good for us, good things will happen. This is not hedonistic. As I've said, by "things that are good for us" I don't mean things that we enjoy and derive pleasure from. I am in no way stating this as fact, it's just the way I see it, and, to tell you the truth, if I've learned anything in life it's that good things really do come when you undertake the challenge of living in a way that's good for you. Make no mistake, it's not in the least bit easy, but it is worth it. Thank you for your time

I think what is keeping people back is the uncertainty of what the 'highest good' entails. Of course, this is a very existential idea, and I think the idea of the highest good differs from person to person, although every person isn't sure of what this idea is. Furthermore, the fear of failing also keeps one back. If you aim for the highest ideal, failure isn't an option. If you fail to achieve that which you view as the highest ideal, how can you ever regain self-confidence, or settle for anything less?
@JoeMcKenzie888
@JoeMcKenzie888 4 жыл бұрын
It's an ideal, it's supposed to shame you. But don't get paralyzed and think you have to be that ideal. It's really something that should always be a bit better than you so you can aim at something and not stay the same. So it's more like the end goal and realizing you almost never match that ideal.

If I do the absolute morally right thing, it will likely interupt my life in a turmoil and distress causing way. This will involve taking legal action against someone shady. If I simply continue being a good person and try not to let the dealings of this shady persons dealings affect me (it costs me about $35/week). I am financially stable but in the category where $35 a week would be pretty helpful (think annual vacation for me and the wife helpful). The action I take could result in the undermining of that stability, a stability I have had to fight pretty hard to have. What should I do?

@brentanthony6038 6 жыл бұрын
Michael Neppel That's a great question. I was starting to think to myself that that would be definable by every pereon. But then I started thinking maybe there is something like an equation for it, something that while being subjective can be described objectively, like X = (some sort of phrase or question that makes one imagine their highest good). But what is meant by good? Is it high moral virtue or is it the best someone can do something for example, such as a composer aiming for their best musical work? Hmmm...

Good and Evil, Light and Shadow, Yin and Yang, Truth and Lies. Could it be that they are the same thing? I dunno Im thinking out loud here. You cannot have one without the other. What is good for you, might be evil/bad for someone else. Who decides? You? or the other? Also you could be praised for doing the "right" thing but as well you could be praised for doing the "wrong" thing. War is a good example. Or the above example in the comments with the A-bomb, that it could actually have said millions of lives as it ended the war. So we praise the USA for killing hundreds of thousands of innocent people to save more? Who knows. I think aiming for the highest good is a completely abstract idea. Could it be just aim for the highest good that you believe in? No matter what it is? Even if its bad for someone else? I tend to believe that this might be the case. We know what we have to do but most of the times we don't do it. We might aim but we never shoot at what we have to do. I will go to the gym next year, I will stop smoking, I wont cheat on my partner, I wont lie to my children. Things that each individual thinks but fails to actualize. Sometimes it takes "bad" things to create "good" things. Is aiming for the highest good, putting action into your own individual rational thought??? Help! :D

its a subjective experience for each and every one of us, as existentialism is a subjective philosophy that relies on the existentialist to create his own meaning and value system in a nihilist post modern world. therefore, the greatest good is something only you can figure out for yourself.

I would conceptualize the highest good as striving toward actions that benefit the widest array of people possible, starting with yourself and your family. 1. Be radically responsible for yourself. Tend your mental, emotional, and physical health every day by reading from a good book. The Bible, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, Pascal's Pensees, Practicing the Presence of God by Brother Lawrence, any book by St. Augustine, The Imitation of Christ by Thomas a Kempis, etc. 2. Be kind. Be kind to your family. Be kind to those you live and work with. Be kind to your fellow drivers, and those you encounter in day to day life. 3. Take a brisk walk every day, and drink enough water. Don't eat junk food. 4. Don't do or say or think anything that makes you ashamed of yourself. 5. Volunteer. Find an organization that helps people in need, and sign up. Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, whatever. Serve your fellow man with a smile on your face. There is nothing that lifts your spirits more than being of service to a human being in need. 6. Whatever you do, do it to the best of your ability. 7. Cultivate a cheerful heart. The world needs kind, giving, cheerful people. Yes, life sucks donkey balls sometimes, but whining about it not only doesn't help, it makes it worse. Don't make your life or anyone else's any harder than it has to be with a bad attitude.

First, I agree. Second, how can this be described more objectively and less mystical? There isn't karma and Peterson, just my opinion, gives the altruists power they don't deserve. The most people can often conceptualize is "selflessness" and "sacrifice" because to them that should be the highest cause for everyone. Isn't that sweet of them? That is what they have been "educated" to believe is moral and the highest cause. The entire "education" system in America subtly promotes Kant philosophy which attacks every individual right. Why else would Kant philosophy be woven into every Marxist society but to undermine the individuals in them? And John Dewey said "you must turn the individuals into socialists", not because he wanted our children to be unique individuals. Very honest I think today's Marxists are brainwashed purposefully. Don't believe my planet would act this stupid naturally. The oracles have always been the most insane, and starting to doubt they every lost control.

I like how he says the idea he talks about is similar but not the same, it's something more rational than some hippie bullshit. I like to see it more like this: If you have an attitude that allows you to be the most efficiently possible you can be, you will have a greater chance of catching the opportunities that are along the way, intead of just not doing anything because you will not even see those opportunities if you don't try.

We only see so far. We only think so deep. Is the face of God so clear that it's wrong to find divinity and actionable wisdom and presence in the idea of God?

For the idea of God to work a litreal God isnt necessesery. Or in other words even if god not exist we should still take the god advice from the Bibel (or at least Jordan peterson interpretaion of IT)

How could this be true. Surely you could aim at the highest good and not receive for example the money needed to eat well, pay rent and take care of your health.

Sorry, Dr Peterson, but you don't get to change the words in The Bible. I can tell you from personal experience that God will provide you if you have faith, and you will never have to worry.

This sure as hell hasn't been true for me. It's a pie-in-the-sky promise that has little to do with reality. Seriously. If I was in the room with him and he tried to tell me this, I'd laugh in his face. It's perilously close to asinine, and it's hard to believe a man like Peterson can be this naive.

Highest good for whom? For me or for the society? And noah build the arc for the flood, its not like he build an arc, and coincidentally there happens to have an apocalyptic flood. What on earth is this guy talking about?
@Ccm2019
@Ccm2019 3 жыл бұрын
He said that you should have something that your trying to build or to pursue. It means focusing on what really matters to you... it’s about taking responsibility. Example is Elon Musk and Steve Jobs.. they didn’t give a shit about anything trivial... they just focus on innovation. They don’t give a shit about traveling, buying luxuries they work towards the benefit of the society. The ark parable means, there’s an inevitable moments where there’s a crises that will come everything that is trivial will get washed a way by flood except on the things that you build that matters.

you can leave pin-oak-kee-o, wishing stars, the bible out of this sermon. if you have a point, plan, or direction, you don't need old fairy tales to work toward your goals. And besides wishers, prayers, planners and even hole-ier than thou jews can get hit by a truck.

This is so wrong it's insulting. The passage simply means: put your relationship with God before everything else in this life and he will see to it that you're taken care of. It doesn't work outside of not believing in God. The whole premise starts with God and ends with God. This interpretation by JP is highly misleading and a false doctrine. Edit: Many months later I still stand by this being the incorrect meaning of the text however the message he is sharing is absolutely 100% correct. In recent days this guy has been blowing my mind. What I've been needing to hear was actually in this video which is so humbling. His simply come to a secular conclusion.

Dr. Peterson does not promote absolute faith in a christian God. He uses examples from the bible in a mythological context; words to live by. he also uses "Pinocchio" as a moral tale, as in this video clip. So no, his premise by no means begins/ends with God.

When we accept Christ as the idealization of what it is to be human then our struggle is to be Christ-like. To be as close to Christ in action and everyday moment as we can, and this is difficult because we are flawed, born in sin, thus doomed to struggle. I think what's being said here is that putting your relationship with God before everything else *means* aiming for the highest good. Just like aiming for the highest good means putting your relationship with God before everything else. I fail to see the difference between the two. If we live our lives in this manner and doing so provides respite from the storm of suffering... if we live our lives in this manner and doing so brings a measure of happiness and meaning, then we have accepted that there is such a thing as meaning, we have faced down nihilism, and thereby we have won the only victory that we can.

I'm not an expert, however having a relationship with the Author allows me to understand. The Author is God. How? 2 Timothy 3:16: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
@ManchestersRedSide

I understand what you're saying however it's still wrong. You can't open a sacred book and interpret it any way you want. If he doesn't have the correct understanding it's perfectly fine to seek council rather than assume interpretation. In the Bible, what his doing is called false doctrine. 2 Timothy 4:3-4: 3 For the time will come when people will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear. 4 They will turn their ears away from the truth and turn aside to myths.
