I take a look at why OCD is not purely a disorder of “disgust” but an anxiety disorder, which Jordan Peterson doesn’t understand.

Honestly psychologists who aren't experts in OCD or other specific mental illnesses should just refrain from talking abou them and defer to specialists when asked. There are so many professional psychologists who still have a backwards view of OCD and I've dealt with several of them first hand.

So true, people/ professionals that have not had it do not and will never truly understand it.

@@JamesDurcan I think the only disorder that's as misunderstood in the professional Mental Healthy/Psychiatric field as OCD is Disassociative Identity Disorder.

Completely on the mark, Rob. While Jordan Peterson has a lot of insights, he doesn’t have insight into ‘everything’ as I think the media has encouraged people to believe by mass exposure. And people tend to want a ‘savior’ to follow. No man or woman has all the answers. But when it comes to OCD specifically, I know who I’m listening to! You, lol! No brainer.

Great video Rob! It can be frustrating for people who deal with OCD hear public figures or even just people they meet in everyday life commenting on something they don't have a lot of experience with and make general statements based on their limited knowledge. I can see that his knowledge on OCD is limited by using the handwashing example. I know that's how most people identify OCD or identify it with being neat or organized, buy its so much deeper than that.

I swear this was exactly my reaction when i saw his video. Tbh i like some of the stuff jordan peterson talks about and some advice is helpful but peterson has also a huge tendency to be anxiety producing and i allways thought it is not surprising to me that he himself had anxiety issues since his worldview of "everything you do matters" or you should ALLWAYS tell the truth or stuff like that are a huge part of his philosophy... The more i learned about anxiety and all the more i got sceptical of his views on things. Bc i can now really see how some of his advice led me to be even more anxious. Everything that makes u kinda tense up inside can't be the right approach to find a lasting solition to anxiety related issues

I was watching a lot of Peterson at one point and agree it probably didn't help the anxiety. His moral absolutism seems like the polar opposite of REBT.

Jordan is a wise man! He`s not 100% perfect but who is? Filter out what is helpfull en leave the rest

Yes - But when it comes to OCD he has minimal understanding. He is very wise but I wouldn't take advice from him on anxiety/ OCD recovery.

Jordan Peterson is wrong about ocd and you have recovered. Recovery from ocd. I’d rather think of my ocd as managed these days. But of course I’m not nearly as intelligent as you sir. Good day.

Jordan Peterson is totally wrong about this. He's very intelligent and has a lot of good advice to give, but OCD is clearly not his specialty and he's not qualified to give talks on OCD. That's very clear to me after hearing what he said. I come across a lot of people who think they know what OCD is and after just a few moments of talking to them I realize they have no clue what so ever. I have a large amount of respect for Jordan Peterson, but he's not the person to go to for advice on OCD.

You didn't finish his point tho, you're just replying fast to what he said without further examing and showing us what he's getting into. Yes psychologists should focus on their specialisations but wtf he was a prof himself and you have to study a lot of psychology literature to be in that position and how long has he'd been a psychologist? And fk he's not even just saying stuff alone, he's had a lot of connections he can check his views with. Sigh, I both have OCD and ADHD mixed type but this is too fast jumping into conclusions, it confuses me either it's a complete jumping into conclusion or just outright bias confirmation

I think Peterson is likely oversimplifying rather than making a blanket statement. A blanket statement is to say OCD is anxiety based, what’s not to say that the subtype of OCD Peterson talks about in this video isn’t predicated on the sufferer feeling anxiety because of a deep sense of unaddressed, personal disgust wrought from a traumatic incident? Or does the individual have an inherent sense of self loathing due to shameful past behaviour that could trigger an OCD response? I think the response in this video is too broad and doesn’t really drill down in to the meaning behind the word disgust. If I think about disgust in relation to an anxiety disorder, the disgust is often at one’s self.
