There is a KZfaq channel called “Carl Rogers” he and his father retiled their French farm buildings to a masterful finish. I have no idea of proximity (as I sit in my Calgary office LOL), but these gentlemen may have sources, resources or advice. Their work was a thing of beauty.

The gite is progressing and the roof issue will require a tarp to prevent further moister damage. Good to see the van being used after a minor delay. Too bad about the fruit, but circumstances dictated the outcome this season. The bread oven is a wonderful historical find and it can also be used as a pizza oven. I bought my first sewing machine... a Pfaff... when I was 15 (I'm now 64) I service it myself and have sewn thousands of dance & stage costumes with it as well as clothes, curtains & bedding. Sewing tip for you...put in the pins the other way up to how you had them...so the point is pointing upward...then you can pull out the pin as you sew by pulling on the glass ball or pin head.

You poor guys losing out on your plum crop due to the dreaded summer flu and the birds, not to mention the violent storm and the roof!!! That's 3 things, you're done!!! Wow, you have a bread oven...looking forward to seeing more of that when you start working on unveiling it in the Winter! Pfaff sewing machines are top notch! Good for you! I have a Pfaff machine too. Love it. Im a quilter and home dec sewer. Wish i was able to be there helping out. Sorry about the challenges of the past week. We are still going thru a lot of stress with multiple issues of health in the family, so we needed your visit. Cant wait to see the gite with all the furnishings put in place. Glad nobody or the doggies were hurt in the roof collapse. All i can think of is go to Brico and buy several tarps. Good luck.

When dealing with old, it’s guaranteed that you will have these shocks and annoying things happen. I’m dealing with a 100 plus year old cottage on the coast of Maine and 40 yrs later I still get surprises, but I still love her!

When Not quite a Chateau had their barn roof done, the roofer put plastic and battons to protect the roof till he came back to do the job.

2 steps forward, 3 steps back sometimes, but it's all good, shame about the roof, but the find of the bread oven is fabulous, looking forward to when you decide to explore that more and reveal what's inside the fireplace.

Interesting to read that your property is in the Berry..where my house of many yrs on the Canal Lateral du Loire called Marseilles les Aubigny Still is there directly on the canal with our garden directly on the Loire interesting old Port with many pleasure boats passing daily. Wow that was a tremendous storm to finish off that roof weak spot. Just cover it with plastic til you can get it fixed. It's all fixable and like you said no one was hurt. Tragic but true! Haha! You are too funny, Patrick. I want to thank you, Patrick, for bringing a smile to my face tonight. My mother had a Pfaff and loved it. When we moved to Germany in 1959, she swore to herself that she was going to come home with a Pfaff, something she wanted all her life. (Along with a large collection of Hummels, most of which I still have.) She had a custom table built for it and she taught me a thing or two about sewing, something she did all the time, sewing many of her clothes. I probably knew Pfaff before I had ever heard of Singer! Her 100th birthday passed last week but, unfortunately, I lost her three years ago. I wish I knew what happened to that wonderful machine. Thank you, Patrick, for the warm memory you gave me. And, after the week you and Stuart have had, I hope you have that bar restocked by next weeks vlog! Tschuss! A bientot!

You looked like a couple of thieves stealing from a chateau to take to your more humble abode, LOL! (Especially viewing it in time-lapse!) Did you have to move that couch/chaise in through the window?!! You're getting so much done, so I hope you are okay with knowing it's a long-term project - it's going to be so special! Love the bread oven find. Maybe you should invest in a cherry-picker so you can repair the roof yourselves (may be worth having for any future (hopefully minor) repairs, and may pay for itself if roofers are pricey like they are in North America! Keep your sense of humour!

Get a BIG waterproof tarp and secure it to the roof covering the gaping holes until you can get it repaired and dry again. EASY. It won't look pretty but will do the job.

Maybe consider getting some nets for your fruit trees next year they aren't very expensive.

Some of my neighbours have lived with tarp over the roof for 5 years, its just need to cheched once in a while for damp or need of repair. It is so expensive these days to build, so I would wait for a good offer/better times

Hi Patrick and Stuart, sorry I missed the premiere tonight, we have family visiting at the moment. Terrible news about the roof and yes all the roofers around here are booked out for around 9 months, we have to wait until early next year to get our next section of roof renewed, I think you may have to put a tarpaulin( un bache) over it for now. What a beautiful fabric you used for the curtains for your gite, I am looking forward to seeing it finished. That thing above the bread oven, is it fixed or just stored there? I couldn't see properly but thought it might be an old dough bin, like a big trough they mixed the dough in.

We can see what kind of week you’ve had by the levels in the whiskey bottles behind you. 😉

Regarding your Mirabelle plums, one trick that might work would be to obtain a lot of fake plums that look like the ripe fruit and hang them on the trees. The birds will try to eat them and tend to learn that the tree does not have edible fruit. This may save some of the fruit. I've heard of this being done with apples. You can also cover the unripe fruit with little 'socks' of something like pantyhose cut in short lengths, so the birds will not notice when they are ripe. Or net the tree.

Bummer about the roof! So sorry. On the other hand, things are moving on nicely! Looking forward to seeing the Gite when it's finished. It's wonderful to use furniture from family, friends and other avenues of acquire. I love the fast forward of you loading and unloading! Great packers by the way! LOL I guess its called experience! Good evening Patrick & Stuart, sometimes it feels like disasters just keep pouring upon us, but, persevere all is not lost. I could say try a tarpaulin just for now, securing it with either big stones or something to keep it from blowing off or away :). It will help for just now till the cavalry arrives! Things never go they way we expect or plan, sorry it is one of those challenges of our lives. We had to get our roof done, we ordered the trusses etc., and told them we are watching the weather, it was summer when we had to do this roof, and as soon as we saw no rain predicted for the following week, we said right deliver and start. We are in Africa, the guys doing the roof were experts, but they did not have a reliable vehicle to get them here, my son had to help him with his vehicle parts. No, you don't want to really know, but they got the roof on before the rain came or we would have been destroyed. I loved the funky music, and the brocant you visited had gorgeous tea pots, I would have left with 3. That was a interesting shop. The oven was a great find, it would be wonderful to open the wall and get that as part of the kitchen. The fruit trees which had been devoured is another story. I should write a book about my life owning a house. I think it would be a best seller ever. As long as there is wine in the house, you are winning, if things get bad, enjoy a glass of vino and things will work out afterwards. I know that sewing machine brand, they are great machines, enjoy and be a happy owner. Hope you get the roof sorted by a quality team, it will be worth it. Do take care, it really is a wonderful life, keep looking up, we get knocked down but not out. We can always rise and shine but not at the same time. Many blessings, kind regards.
