The way Ian dances at 0:55 and disappears into the dark is so striking its almost frightening.

True Kate. Unknown Pleasures, in particular, sparked my 14 year old mind into poetry and writing song lyrics to encapsulate the struggles I was going through. Still listen to them today when I have the opportunity. I could finally read into the essence and quality of well written verse.

There is nothing being sung by anyone today that even remotely approaches the visceralness of this song.

Lol have you ever listened to black sabbath?
@albertogarbino15508 жыл бұрын
In case you didn't notice, this song is a suicide note. Probably you weren't paying attention to the lyrics, which honestly report what Ian Curtis was enduring as a human being and performer. Paranoid may be honest and it's a fine song, but this is desperation becoming art. It's not a song, it's a manifesto. It's the story of a life, and of Ian Curtis' death. So I invite you to listen to this song lyrics at hand, and maybe you'll discover a new meaning of 'heavy', both in sound and feeling.
@JeremyB19938 жыл бұрын
i wasn't talking about paranoid...black sabbath isn't only paranoid...plus paranoid was written by black sabbath's bass player who wrote about himself...

Such a great, intense performance. Saw JD w/the Buzzcocks in Hemel Hempstead in 79, a naive and confused 20 y.o. US GI, looking for experiences as different as possible from my US steeltown upbringing. I went to see the Buzzcocks, but who was this opening band? There was a small knot of fans upfront; sfter hearing something really unique coming from the PA, I edged even closer, transfixed. One of those rare life moments where the earth's axis spun in a beautiful new direction.

[Verse 1] A change of speed, a change of style A change of scene, with no regrets A chance to watch, admire the distance Still occupied, though you forget Different colours, different shades Over each mistakes were made I took the blame Directionless so plain to see A loaded gun won't set you free So you say [Verse 2] We'll share a drink and step outside An angry voice and one who cried We'll give you everything and more The strain's too much, can't take much more Oh, I've walked on water, run through fire Can't seem to feel it anymore [Outro] It was me, waiting for me Hoping for something more Me, seeing me this time Hoping for something else

The band's best song and Ian's swan song. The most raw, most heartfelt, most foreboding piece of music I have ever heard and will probably ever hear in my lifetime. Mr. Curtis, I hope you found peace. I, for one, am still searching.

Thanks for posting it has decent sound for a live recording from that long ago! I have been captivated by Joy Division for months- I never found then when when I was young. Ian was one year yonger than me. In 76 I had stopped play guitar and took up drums. Not long ago I found this song and was inspired to make my own cover which I have posted to this video. I hope other fans like my take on the song and comment also.
