A lot of what you see is his ability to keep a conversation going. He makes his guests feel like they are just in a room with a couple of friends, not being watched by millions. He's very technical in his approach when it comes to getting people to talk more. He's a really good conversationalist. It's almost hard for me to believe he doesn't practice or rehearse in some kind of way. Not that that would make him any less of a fantastic interviewer, but he really is natural about it.

Thankfully my brother did not take it…his friend did and was captured by one of those groups and was forced to take care of a runway that they held for 7 years! He finally was released when this particular group was over run by another and was able to come home.

i'm somali, the country is a failed state. It doesn't mean there isn't a form of government as there has always been a system of clans with elder members at the top. There are 5 main clans with sup clans below them splitting off until it reaches local community level. People have had to scrap and fight to survive for nearly 30 years so now you have 2 generations of somali men who have known that by using violence they can get whatever they want. Their power has got them so much fear that they have control over areas a whole clan used to run. Anyone who stands up to them gets murdered and when you can control the wages of the police then you have total dominance. On top of all this you have foreign agencies and militaries finically support whoever is willing to let them achieve there goals, leading to an all out shit show. I miss my country, used to be so beautiful!

Somalia is quite underrated on the scale of the most dangerous destinations in the world. When I was about 10 back in the late 80s at school in New Zealand a teacher there had her husband taken hostage and was held captive for years also. It was big news at the time and nobody knew what the outcome would be. Amazingly she tried to keep her spirits high and just continued on with her job as in those days there wasn't really any other option. It was amazing when we learnt he had been released. That was one of the biggest news stories of that era in my homeland

Tim O'donnell Underrated in dangerous places? I live here buddy and I’ve never came across any “danger” or “terrorist attack” these type of stuff are very rare and when it does happen it’s usually only a few who are killed.

Tim O’donnell What a lie you told here. Somalia failed as a state between 1990 and 1991. In the 1970’s to 1980’s Somalia was the place to go to vacation in Africa. It was peaceful with a functioning government back then. My parents took me from DC to Mogadishu in 1988. I have pictures of my childhood at the Lido Beach and Urubo Hotel. There were alcoholic beverages and amazing seafood. I remember the incredible taste of tropical fruits as a kid.

Fact, Somali pirates came about when foreign fishing vessels would invade Somali national waters and illegally catch fish and basically ran the locals main food source dry. It was pretty justified at the beginning but then they realized stealing shit is a lot more productive than catching fish.

Nope, they didn't even have nets before westerners gave them that tech. No way did they have this fishing paradise full of peace and love and freedom. If not for forigners stopping them they would still be enslaving each other and without forigners sending aid a good portion of the population would starve and die.

I thought of the Shawshank Redemption, and the argument between Freeman and Robbins in the cafeteria about hope, and how dangerous and damaging that is (according to Freeman, and now this man also) in a place like prison.... very apropos writing.... I can understand that completely. You'd have to adjust, have to let certain things go, it would be far too painful to even think of loved ones or home (in a hostage situation in Somalia for crying out loud).... pretty brutal man....
