But I also get the sense that she hadn't made up her mind either until the close of evidence , which makes her an even better judge. She's able to give everyone a fair chance, even if a defendant is being a totally unhinged piece of trash. Many judges would've just kept Darrell Brooks in the naughty room with his box fort and not given him chance after chance after chance to change his behavior.

I am 80.5 years old, in my mind is still sharp. I am legally blind, so my activities are limited, but I can do pretty much whatever I want. For exercise, I either walk, or put on my playlist. Of contemporary Christian music and dance. After all, the Bible tells us to dance before the lord. The only fly in this appointment, is that life in prison is much harder on the body, and the soul, then life on the outside. For diet, for medical care, lack of exercise, it can all add up to an early demise. I’m pretty sure that the majority of prisoners do not make it to 80. But, as you point out, there is always hope. The more I think about it, the more I believe that it is important or in prison people do you have that glimmer of hope. Without it, there is no point to their lives. So, I am joining with you in degree that this is a good and just sentence. It was given by a good and just judge.

I admire the judge for an entirely different reason from you. That woman has the patience of a saint & the self control of a tightrope walker. How she dealt with DB & all his complete nonsense, was an inspiration & she’s someone MANY judges should aspire to emulate. If she wasn’t screaming all the way home in her car & into her pillow each night then she should be studied by science. 😂

@@Rae777 yes! Especially when you compare her with someone like the judge in the Delphi case. The justice system seems like a joke, there. It’s horrendous, and the worst part is, I’m afraid he’s innocent. The other is if she gets away with what she is doing to him, it could be done to anyone. Isn’t THAT a terrifying thought? If only every judge put their professional obligations ahead of their personal feelings. If only all of them cared this much for preservation of their right to a fair trial. I hope a lot of young people take note of how PROFESSIONAL she is, and hold her as an example for their future service.

The possibility of getting out at 80 is basically a life sentence. If we expect, as many say they do, for prison to be a place of not just punishment but of rehabilitation, then sentencing her to this amount of time serves both purposes. She’ll likely never walk out of there but she will have that “hope” and maybe reflect on her horrible acts and possibly, at some point, admit and accept responsibility for what she did.

She did that already but lost halfway through. She's very conservative as a human which probably didn't help. Her strength is in trials and I think she should stay there. She deals with defendants, their families, and victims with such composure, patience, and compassion. She's not one of those old farts. Putting her behind a desk writing briefs wouldn't highlight her talents, it's how she deals with humans face-to-face that makes her shine. I believe it takes a special kind of person to deal with crazy defendants with grace and compassion, many judges, even in higher courts, don't have that talent, so I think it'd be a waste to put her in any other court.

It felt like we were given a window into her thought process, humanizing an aspect of the judicial role that many don't often see. Sentencing is clearly not just a procedural step at the end of a trial; it’s a complex decision with serious consequences. This was one of the most thoughtful sentencing hearings I've witnessed, and it highlighted the weight of the responsibility judges carry. It's definitely not an easy job. I admire judge Dorrow so much. She offers mercy and a chance at redemption to someone (in my opinion) who doesn’t deserve it. The defendant has an opportunity to receive parole, but only if she is able to prove that she has changed. I don’t think that she will, but judge Dorrow giving her the opportunity that will be decided purely based on the defendant’s own actions truly speaks to this judge’s character. It’s so strange seeing the difference in judges, from Gull to Dorrow. The first time i went to a sentencing I paid for 30 minutes of parking. Never did I expect for a sentence to take hours to deliver. I thought it was literally “you are sentenced to - blank. I think this judge has very sound reasoning and has literally thought of every angle. You are right that it is just an opportunity to be released and if the parole board does their job 🤞🏼- if there is still deviant behaviour she stays behind bars. I think it is important to give a person hope and a chance to redeem themselves no matter how small the chance as long as you have appropriate safeguards in place. You never really know what small kindness or mercy may be able to change their thinking and behaviour. I am sad she has resigned from the bench when I have just discovered her. I hope there is somewhere we can still follow her work. We need more judges like her that use their intellect and knowledge but balance with mercy and compassion. Bravo!

Being able to participate in the live feeds of trials and channels like yours helps immensely educate the public on the entire timeline and process from the comission of the crime to sentencing. I think citizens should be more educated on how the entire justice system works. Thanks for all you do both here and for your clients!

I feel bad for her future victims, such as the lady she "befriended " in jail. Her M.O. is spinning sad tales so people give her money. She will continue while in prison. She knows no different behavior. She will continue to victimize others to get what she wants. She just cannot look within herself.

I agree. Although I love this judge , I feel this sentence is too lenient. Victims of homicide and their loved ones don't get hope for change and a second chance.

I have an enormous amount of respect for Judge Darrow. She has done an amazing job with maintaining balance, but also being passionate about justice and holding people accountable. I think that having court proceeding available online is a huge benefit to our society.

I'm good with the sentence. If this crime had been done to me I would hope for a similar sentence. I've had a lot of pain and poor health in my life with times of doing very well. With all of that, it hurt my heart that her victim was left to die alone. When my husband died, I, as well as my adult children were with him, and we were holding his hands. As far as learning from trials, I've been watching trials since 1990. The first couple I watched on my local TV channel and then I found CTV. I learn something from every trial whether it be about LEO, attorneys, judges, defendants, victims, and what they do and why. I learn about the law and the people, the system, and myself. I'm really pleased that I have found many streamers on KZfaq who have varied opinions and strengths on trials. Thanks for all you do.

If she took accountability and was remorseful I think she would have gotten a lighter sentence.

This is by far the most interesting and educational sentencing i've ever seen or heard. The judge demonstrates the thinking she's done and the values she holds.

Love that you covered this! I was so impressed with this judge while she presided over the Darrell Brooks trial that it was really interesting to see her in this context. Thanks Peter!

I'm glad she didn't get on the Supreme Court because I think her strength is in being a trial judge. She doesn't sound or behave like an old fart. She speaks to defendants with firmness but also sounds compassionate. Despite the antics of a defendant, she has the right reflexes of taking a break, having a little calm-down talk with her clerk, some deep breaths, and coming back out with a clear and balanced head.

I appreciate the judges with experience on all three sides. I also appreciate prosecutors like Karen McDonald who was a judge at one point in her career in law. The transparency of trials is good for all because it reduces chances of appeal and holds people accountable. I also love learning about the law from watching these proceedings. I am happy Judge Dorow brought that up and was further explained by Peter.

When Judge D said “Do not interrupt me again.” I heard the bass in her voice. Darrell really made her tighten down on that particular statement here.

I don’t know much about what goes on in a courtroom but I love this judge! I’m taken aback by how much she is explaining to the defendant and making sure she is making herself very clear.
