This one-take performance was Day 18 of our Songs of September series - a 30 day voter registration drive concert series. Every day in September 2020, we shared a song of protest/change/hope alongside voter information to help encourage Americans to participate in the US election.
In October, we asked listeners to vote on their favorite tracks. The songs with the most votes were compiled on the album SEEDS, Volume 1, released in November 2020 - a democratically elected album! Democracy in action!

it does have a heaviness to it - it is a terrible thing that this song is so relevant - still. I keep thinking how can we together rise above all of this? move beyond war and senseless conflict.

@@staslurik but NATO is ALREADY at Russia's borders and has been for many years - also the Kaliningrad Oblast has been completely surrounded by NATO countries and no problem.

@@juliaothmer your version of Russians sounds more sad than Stings original from the 80th. I am child of the 80th and grown up with the iron courtin. With the Berlin Wall and the divided Germany. Putin wants to turn the time back. The world must stop him.

@@juliaothmer - I live in India. I have loved the original song for years. You added a dimension that cannot be articulated well. But you aced it! India has had great relationships with the Soviet Union. And that good feelings translated to the Russian Federation as well. And to Russians in general. In one fail swoop, Putin has wreaked that good feeling for the Russian government. The Ukrainians were part of the Soviet Union and for us the strong feelings are for them too. So incredibly tragic for the Ukrainians. Hard to believe that this is happening to a country. Seems almost unreal. Crushed in the global power play between Nato and Putin's Russia. The US Europe has to take more responsibility for this. Rebuilding Ukraine and helping them restore their lives. Ideally, the Russian Federation should be made to pay for the rebuilding but I am afraid that may be high hopes given that ordinary Russians are going to be hurting from the sanctions and we have all seen the effect of the Versailles treaty! Putin has destroyed the future for Russians as well. And my heart goes out to them too. I am jumping the gun. First, the conflict must end. And I am afraid, the pains are going to continue till Putin gets what he wants - a land corridor to Crimea. Senseless to destroy a country and the lives of millions of Ukrainians for tactical military advantage. The lyrics of the song still ring true. Back to the cold war again. Heartbreaking! By the way, I love "On the Turning Away too!"

I think the Putin power machine and his coterie of oligarchs that have gotten rich off of the Russian state and people should have to pay for the restoration and rebuilding of Ukraine. May democracy and the people be empowered. Where do you live in India? I'm doing a project involving an Indian poet, her words put to music, and an environment she helped save - maybe you could give me some perspective on it? Would you like to connect via email?

Absolutely amazing interpretation of this song, Julia! So powerful and true. Interesting that I am pulling out an old acoustic song I wrote back around 1988 called "The Land Beyond the Rainbow." And, it is about tension of the cold war...now relevant again. Why do we only pay lip service to: "If we don't learn history, we are doomed to repeat it?" We all learn history...and damn if we don't repeat it anyway. 😞

That is incredible. Tell me more. What has your experience been like? How are the Ukrainian families coping? Are you in Poland?

@@juliaothmer I welcomed four mothers with 6 children to my house in the country. 2, 5, 6, 7, 10, 17 years old. Children go to kindergarten, school and high school. Two moms (an engineer and a master) work physically in warehouses. Two (a lawyer and a trader) look after the children and the home. Everyone is doing well, preferably the children at school. Polish is similar to Ukrainian. The families are from Kyiv, Zaporizhia, Khmelnytsky. I am like the father of a new family. I handle a lot of administrative and health-related formalities myself. Visits to the doctor, dentist, social matters. There is great kindness of the local population and local administration. People bring what they can for the Ukrainians, food and clothes. Ukrainians are treated as dear guests, not as refugees. And this is the case all over Poland, which has received 2.5 million Ukrainians. I do it out of the need of my heart and out of the conviction that in this way I am taking part in the defense of Ukraine, Poland and the whole of Europe against Rusyism. Glory to Ukraine. Regards

It's horrifying the atrocities that many governments and militaries around the world commit. I agree. Also when I listen to the lyrics, I hear as much an inditement of the American system as the Russian one. I think it is soooo very important to vote and get involved.

That I believe is the point of the song - remembering our common humanity above and beyond the political and ideological divides - our deep and loving connections as humans is what is most beautiful in this world. we can make war obsolete when we stop letting politics and ideologies sanction violence and murder.

@@user-ub6hf3cf1e It is heart-wrenching - from what I understand, many Russians have been fed propaganda about the invasion. Still - so many very brave Russians are speaking up against the war despite the possibility of great punishments upon them. And other forms of resistance are happening among Russians - Just yesterday, the lead ballerina of the Bolshoi Ballet resigned in protest.

@@juliaothmer I do not know what kind of propaganda you mean. Russians are against the war and the deaths of civilians. But most russians are also against the ukrainian nazis, who were trained by the US military. So, Russia will not allow NATO military bases in Ukraine and the nuclear status of Ukraine. Ukraine's war criminals will be put on trial.
