It's a blues technique that BB King called "beck and call" where the vocalist would sing a line of the lyric, and the guitarist would play a passage, and they would trade off through the verse. Ian Gillan and Ritchie Blackmore would often do it live, and Ian did it with Steve Morse as well.

Yeah i keep thinking the same its a southern thing ! Phil is from New Orleans -the deeeeep south - he sings like the South 🇺🇸 actually when you listen to Darrell (guitarist) sing in a little Arlington bar in Texas- singing "cat scratch fever" - i just hear his normal southern voice come out & is how he actually talked ... not everyone understands -its a southern'thing I only knew Vinnie, Darrell, Rex ... non singing voices & they are frm TEXAS - they talk & sing with Texas twang i guess to say .... adding Phil was bring in deep southern vocals from new orleans Pantera -Vinnie - they NEVER sold-out to hollywood bs band crap! they kept their southern style & made their own rules !!!

Pantera was the hardest-hitting metal band, in my opinion. Most of their songs punch you right in the face and leave you wanting more. Give the song Domination a listen. There's a great live version from Moscow that was from 1991. The energy of the song is off the charts!!

They were a Texas-based band, and Phil himself is from Louisiana, so a bit of Southern US dialect occasionally comes through in their vocals. That twang, and unique vowel placement on words like "past" are typical of the Southern dialect.

I know I love this song and this performance more than I can describe but it's fun to hear you break it down. The speech quality part and about how he takes vowels and does some real dynamic things with them, it makes sense now why it's so pleasing to listen to even though I don't understand the music theory. Also why I appreciate these breakdowns. And then "the note" of course being mimiced by the guitar which is goosebump city. Great reaction.

@@jvoxfox agreed!! On that note, if you venture further into Pantera and do Floods, please do NOT use the version with the most views, as there is a glitch in the audio not once, but twice in the epic guitar solo, and it completely removes you from the immersion of the music. Honestly for Floods, I recommend one of the lyric versions. You're awesome! 💕
