Dear Julie 💜💙💚 amaaazing once again... I am finalizing my space right now, I spent hours and days sitting in my headquarters learning about myself through your videos, knowing my space due your wisdom, reconnecting with my 6th sense. These tips are excellent! I have an open plan, and I had always wanted a TV corner. Not until this year, I did what Julie says “Define the areas”. After a lot of thinking I managed to get 4 distinct areas: sitting room (with no TV!), dining area, TV corner and kitchen with an island and bar stools. I am thoroughly enjoying it!

Julie, you’ve hit the nail on the head for me when you said that I could feel “paralyzed” by my open space home. We’ve lived here for four years already and I just can’t figure out how to arrange furniture or what to buy to replace the old furniture. Then there’s the windows, the lanai, the lighting, etc. So much. This was my very first video to see and I was encouraged. I look forward to watching more. Thank you.

Am I the only person who doesn’t like open concept homes?! 😅 I need more than furniture to separate rooms. I don’t mind the dining area and kitchen to be open but the living room needs to be separated for me to feel cozy.

Enjoy all the Julie Khuu regardless if they are applicable to me. The cadence of the video from room to room allows me to focus in on objects before you cut to another room. Because you linger longer in the areas you are discussing, i dont have to constantly stop video and go back a few frames to catch that moment again and again. I really appreciate that. I have a very uniquely awkward small open living space that has sat empty for three years because it is that awkward. I am emotionally paralyzed for fear of bringing out the worst in it. I look forward to more problem defying strategies. Thanks a Bunch!

I'm an Italian writing from Spain. I'm in the process of building extensions to our large house to create a boutique hotel. I would love to see all of this but on a tiny scale. I'm planning on two 20 metres extensions ,where I need to incorporate kitchen/dining/ sitting area. The spaces are rectangular with possible 2 outside doors either end and windows on one side for the magnificent views. Bedrooms and bathrooms already exist. Compliments on your EXCELLENT video. Some people mentioned that the benefits of open floor plan is to observe everything and everyone at the same time, if u have kids or elderly that u want to keep an eye on. Some other people are used to having rooms with purpose, dining for eating, kitchen for cooking, living for watch tv and gathering, etc. So it's back to the living habits of the clients. As a designer, i always ask that before designing layout for the house. But for limited space, such as apartment, i suggest open floor plan, for a spacious feeling.

I loved this video. I have gotten a lot of inspiration from it. My question is how can you work with a basement living space? I find that those spaces are more awkward. And lighting becomes an issue as well. Thanks for continually educating us one video at a time.

What do you think about floor plugs for open concept areas? I personally hate the look of it but we're building a huge open concept kitchen/dining/living area and I'm afraid no floor plugs will make the area unusable for practical stuff. Thank you for doing this series!!
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu 3 жыл бұрын
I specify them all the time GV. Absolute must so you don’t have unsightly and dangerous cords dangling everywhere. Of course the kicker is your space already has to be thought out so you know exactly where to locate the plugs.

Julie, I love all your videos and am going to make sure i watch every single one! Could you consider a video on how to design around different flooring. Cos flooring is likely one of the things in a house that wd be most difficult and expensive to change. For example my house has marble and i havent been able to find much examples on how to do interior design for this.

Thank you so much. I love your channel. I have a laundry closet in my kitchen, but I would like to put the refrigerator in there instead & put a stackable washer & dryer next to it. Then hang a nice design curtain panel in front of the half with W/D & leave refrigerator half open. This will be exactly opposite of where dining area is too (13 feet apart). Not sure how that look though?
@JulieKhuu

I have that exact same condition in my mid-century Modern Ranch style home. Unfortunately I can’t stack my W/D bc of height restrictions, but I removed the awful accordion doors and placed curtains instead. The ultimate in functionality plus provides a nice backdrop for some of the videos you see on my channel. We’re in sync 🙌🏻

I have an awkward space issue Julie! Help! First let me say that I have no eating area in my kitchen, therefore my dining area is where we eat. Our living room and dining room is within one room, with the living room having a door on either side of our fireplace( which go out to our deck). Our LR furniture is way too large for the room. I’m not sure how to arrange it so that it’s fully functional.
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for watching Kandice! Too large furniture can definitely cramp a space and force you to give up a necessary function (or two). If you can’t move the seating to another room, you will have to make it work and move some other pieces out. Check out my Dream Space series, particularly the episode on scale and proportion so you understand the space you have to work it! 👍🏻

Hi Julie, my house is such a pain to figure out. I LOVE it so much and i just want to get it right. It was built in 1900 and the original house was WAY smaller than our 4000 sq ft now. After you walk through the entry way you’re in an open concept kitchen, dining, living room that i want to be moody, Victorian, ornate, etc. I have been shamelessly rocking this style since the 90s and I’m thrilled that it’s finally “in” 🎉 I am LOVING my large wall that includes a lighter gray toned brick fireplace and beautiful contrasting wood pieces, I just painted BM midnight on this very large wall and the bay windows at each end of it.(very dark navy) should i paint my ceiling the same color? I want moody, the house is all windows so tons of natural light and many many live plants. I’m going to stain my cabinets a dark brown and have gold accents. Any suggestions? Also EVERY trim and door is this warm light golden oak. If i stain my cabinets that dark, do i then have to refinish all that golden oak the same color or just go darker? 😅
@JulieKhuu
@JulieKhuu Жыл бұрын
I like some contrast no matter what the vibe. Light and airy needs a mix of whites and tonal brights. Dark and moody also needs layers of pigmented hues to make each corner sing. I would vote to keep the trim so the millwork stands out. Try solid walls and patterned furnishings and window treatments 😍

Hi Julie. I've working through all your videos. I don't think I have many to go 😂 I'm very new to interior design. I have lived in my home for 12+ years and I'm using your videos for every part of the house. I'm really struggling on the living room. I just can't come up with a layout! Ive tried drawing it out and looking at lots of examples but because none are exactly like my layout it doesn't help. I just can't 'see' the room any different! Currently everything is pushed up against the walls 😔 Heeellllp!

I have to agree 😊 The homes pictured are truly stunning but not representative of the average homeowner. That's also not to say the average homeowner is in a "small space" either (although "small space" is certainly subjective!). I am in a 3300 sq. ft open concept home and still could not apply most of these layouts pictured in 5,000-10,000 sq. ft. homes. They are gorgeous to look at but may not always resonate 😊
