It's time for a garden update! Starting a new garden at a new house is a bit of an undertaking. Plus, with the current state of the world, things have been a little more challenging. We're not letting that stop us though! I've been able to a get few things going at the new place and I'm really excited with how things are coming along. For the first time, I'm doing some contain gardening on my deck and we've been able to repurpose an existing bed by using materials we already had around. Things might look a little different in the garden this year, but that's ok because I'm really excited about the new stuff we're trying.
For a point of reference, I'm in Virginia in Zone 7. All of the plants in the garden we either seeded directly or started from seed inside, a mint plant. I like to grow a lot heirloom varieties, which means lots of interesting shapes and colors!

The basil situation is my FAVORITE thing right now. How are things going with your garden?

The garden is growing fairly well here. First time I have had tomatoes actually really do anything so I am happy. I have to agree with the flowering Tobacco for the red flower.

That's great! Homegrown tomatoes are the best. Time to do more searching on that flower.

The red mystery flowers are possibly some kind of flowering tobacco plants or something related in the Solanaceae family.

You could Grow some spinach and/or kale in those empty pots. I live in Virginia zone 7 too and these plants seem to do better when you plant them in August.

He if you still dont know what the little red flowers are. We have the same (I live in germany) My parents brought them from Italy and we know them as "Glücksblumen" which means luckflowers or lucky flowers they are like weeds if they make the black perls never let them fall in the bed there will be hundreds in the next jear

LOVE the creative shapes of the garden beds, especially the tomato one! I prefer growing basil and mint in containers on the deck as well, this way they are way cleaner as they don't get soil splatters in the rain and don't get damaged by the wind. I can't imagine any asian cooking without cilantro though - equal amounts of mint, basil ant cilantro chopped up and mixed is what makes any dish taste and smell thai/vietnamese/georgian to me. It's so basic, but so essential that I would honestly order the seeds no matter the shipping cost.

I do love cilantro! And parsley too. Hmm. Maybe I need to place an order.

You should just do a small seed order. Rareseeds.com or Baker Creek still has inventory. They also have free shipping and give you free seeds. You can still plant Zinnia, beans, squash, and all the fall stuff. My garden this year (Zone 7, Niagara) was focused around getting the most and growing food for the year. I am doing lots of succession sowing and both spring and fall garden with micro cropping in between. So my garden spaces are changing a lot over the course of the season. Very different, and I’m doing a lot more processing to keep up with the output. I guess I would call it intuitive gardening. So far, so good!

Sounds like your garden is doing great! Yeah I think I might need to place a seed order.

No garden for me, I'm sure my landlord would let me have a small one but my thumb is nowhere near green 😂 luckily my parents did a big garden this year and it is thriving! Lots of cucumbers and lettuce already, which is awesome because I've been very disappointed in the grocery store produce lately.

Did you look at the no-dig method? Amd a home-compost situation?
@SarahMoranNutrition
@SarahMoranNutrition 4 жыл бұрын
I generally do no-dig, but that back bed is so hard and crusty that basically nothing will grow there, not even weeds. We are composting our kitchen scraps, but it would take a while to generate the amount we would need to get that bed started. Hopefully I'll be able to get what I need though and get it going.

Honestly, I wouldn't know. In general though, the things I would look at if I was deciding on a school would be the program's focus area, proximity to my home/online option, and cost. You may have different priorities, so think about what you want out of a program and then go from there.
