Jump up Routine for Non-hunting days with an American Kestrel

On the days I’m not hunting with the kestrel, I feed her a daily ration in tidbits, calling her vertically about 7 feet to the fist usually more than 100 times. She anticipates this and seems to enjoy it, and the exercise pays off on hunting days with increased speed and stamina.

:) so much fun, My fellow apprentice and I had a challenge many years ago...we tried to see how many we could each do with our kessies - she won at over 300 :) without a tidbit :)

Matt, I missed seeing you when you were in Arkansas a few weeks ago. I'm a first year apprentice with a Kestrel. I've had a lot of fun but not been successful at catching any starlings. It seems they always fly before my bird gets to them. Am I doing something wrong or is that the nature of the beast when the starlings are in large flocks for the winter? Thanks.

Ideally youre looking for a single bird or a group of 4 or less...I assume youre carhawking? It helps to do a few baggies to get the Kestrel in the proper thinking mode as to whats going on and whats expected of it. Once there is no hesitation from the Kestrel on baggies then you will start having more luck at slips of wild birds. Also it has a lot to do with timing..toss too soon and it puts your bird out of position ,same with too late. If you have lots of Sparrows you might practice on them to get your timing right .
