You can always tell when a Pink Diamond fanart was made between this episode and her next appearance based on whether they gave her split bangs or normal bangs

something i JUST noticed while watching this video is that at 6:48, stevonnie as pink gets excited and her eyes shine with diamonds, like the diamond’s pupil shape. however, rose quartz was usually shown with sparkles in her eyes in the shape of a star, since the star is the symbol of the crystal gems. i just find that such a cute little detail :)

I can’t believe I didn’t see this in my various rewatches of this episode for the video. Nice catch!

For some related context, the five-pointed star that becomes the Crystal Gems symbol is sort of a descendant of Pink Diamond's own symbol, the five-pointed pink hibiscus that we see Pearl wear in "ASPR" (and that we see pop up repeatedly in places related to Pink, like the Zoo). "End of an Era" goes into some detail on this but basically, Steven Sugar (Rebecca's younger brother and a background artist for the show) came up with the symmetry of the five-pointed flower and five-pointed star and how one evolved into the other as Pink became Rose Quartz and rejected her past self. Once you know the truth about Rose, these echoes of Pink Diamond that have been planted throughout the show become more apparent.

@@shipshow463WOW i didn’t even know that . i always liked the idea that pink’s hair resembled the hibiscus and rose had ringlets like the layered petals of a rose, but i hadn’t even noticed the correlation of the flower and the star that is such a cool little detail wow

Honestly aside from a few notable others, Jungle Moon was one of THE BEST written episodes in the show. The amount of parallels and information packed into a regular-length episode is just insane.

I think a lot about Pink Diamond's broken reflection in this episode still - one of my favorite scenes in the series

There's in thing in this episode you didn't mention that always struck me about the flashback. You briefly touched on the foot stomp as part of the temper tantrum in the flashback - but if you listen when this happens you can hear a thunderous sound muffled by the music. We know Pink had destructive tantrums in the past, and pinks memory is likely rose-tinted, hence she remembers a gentle foot stomp, the one we see in the flashback. I believe however that this simple stomp of her foot essentially destroyed the moon base. This is speculation, but look at the state of the moon base, the history of pinks tantrums as expressed by volleyball in future, and the foot stomp in the flash. In my headcannon this simple foot stomp was a lot more destructive than Pink remembers - perhaps even swayed or repressed by Steven's difficulty accepting Pink's negative behaviour, she wanted to see herself as a good person, and Steven wants to see her ilas a good person subconsciously, so we see this flashback as Pink's recollection filtered through stevonie's perception of 'themself', rather than how it actually was - we know this is true even because Connie's mother wasn't actually yellow diamond. I rambled but long story short I think Rose's tantrum is what destroyed the moon base.

i feel like people don't talk about the connie aspect of this episode. my interpretation is that the catalyst for the dream wasn't just being on the jungle moon, but stevonnie having connie's side and her issues with her mother. steven doesn't deal with the inferiority and disrespect that connie feels around her mother. however, pink diamond DID deal with very similar emotions as connie. connie's turmoil leading to a dream about her mother absolutely awoke that pink diamond turmoil sitting dormant inside steven. i sincerely do not believe steven would ever have had that dream if he wasn't in stevonnie. he had nothing to relate it to until sharing connie's side in their fusion.

Nice video. I agree with much of what you say. But I did also have some different thoughts than yours, so I hope you don't mind if I share those. First is that that while this introduction to Pink does highlight some similarities between herself and Steven, it also highlights their differences. They may fill similar roles in their respective families but Steven's personality and approach to things is very different. Even early on in the show, he never acted in the "bratty" manner that we see from Pink here. He basically never threw tantrums and even when he did get upset with the Gems (like in "Warp Tour"), it was always for justifiable reasons, not just because he didn't get his way and was mad about it. This contrast is strengthened later in "Volleyball" when we learn that Pink used to throw tantrums "left and right". That's very different from young Steven (although of course ironically, by Future, Steven has changed and started to resemble Pink more in some ways). I think part of what makes Pink's behavior so jarring to viewers when they first see this episode is that the two main children characters of the show, Connie and Steven, are so mature. Neither would ever behave like Pink does here. They would be mindful enough not to get in the way of someone doing important work just because they're bored or want to play. They wouldn't throw such an immature tantrum when scolded. So to see Pink, this supposedly grand, scary, Diamond acting like this, it makes her look extra-childish. They also seem to have different motivations. Both want to be seen in a better light, if not as equals, by their families. But they have different reasons for doing so. Pink believes she's just as important as the other Diamonds and demands to be given the respect she deserves. Steven wants the Crystal Gems to believe in him and treat him like a fellow Crystal Gem, not just a kid. But he wants that not because he thinks he's just as important as the Gems, but because he wants to fulfill the role Rose used to have, because he wants their trust so they will tell him the truth about things. It's not about ego for Steven, it's about growing closer as a family. So while I do think that this episode is meant to draw some parallels between Pink and Steven, it's also meant to highlight the things that make them different, the things that make Steven successful in dealing with his family where Pink wasn't. It's also important to remember that at this point of the show, there was so much speculation going on about Rose = Pink Diamond and that the writers had to be very deliberate in throwing people off the scent. In the "End of an Era" artbook, Rebecca talks about this a bit: "Whenever a big reveal like Pink Diamond would be on the horizon, we'd all be holding our breaths thinking, like, 'Just don't let this get out.' I definitely lived in fear for a long time that the Pink Diamond reveal would get out there. We were only ever showing Pink Diamond in this negative context: stylized in these story sequences or contorted with rage like we saw her in 'Jungle Moon'. What we were hiding was the clown-like, childish-looking state that she is often in before the reveal. [Rebecca talks for a bit about how a T-shirt for the show was put out by CN with Pink Diamond's full design on it prior to "Jungle Moon" airing and how it shows her having hair like Steven's and smiling.] People still didn't guess the entirety of the story, but they looked at her and thought 'Oh, she looks like a little clown.' Part of me was excited that the design is so clear that you can look at her and immediately tell how she fits in among the hierarchy of the Diamonds, but we had really been trying to obscure that by previously showing her only in scenes where she's depicted in this terrifying position of power." So the show was somewhat limited in the things they could do in "Jungle Moon". They couldn't really show the less bratty sides of PD. Especially with how crappy CN was with scheduling releases for SU, who knows how many months there'd be between "Jungle Moon" and the big reveal in "ASPR". I wonder, if SU hadn't had such a big theory community at the time, if the writers had felt comfortable going a bit further in drawing the parallels between Steven and Pink, what else might we have seen of Pink? We get so few glimpses of her in the show and it's just a bit unfortunate that the first time we see her, the show was forced to make her look extra bad just to avoid too many people guessing the PD twist. Edit: also, "Jungle Moon" deserved to win that Emmy damnit!

The parallels get even more direct in Future. I mean, Steven *literally* goes through the exact same arc as Pink Diamond before she left Homeworld. After a tumultuous but enjoyable early life, Pink and Steven start feeling left behind and devoid of purpose as the other Diamonds/people in their life move on in their lives and move away, leaving them behind and unable to emotionally be able to cope with the changes (Sadie and Lars breaking up, Sadie Killer & the Suspects breaking up, the Cool Kid gang leaving to work or study, Lars going to space/the Diamonds leaving for their colonies and Pink Pearl being taken away, etc. They’re both during all this not taken seriously because of their height, being called silly and small for Pink, and being remarked as being “smaller than I expected” for Steven. Both Pink and Steven start developing a bad and rebellious attitude, throwing tantrums and fighting with their family, running off, etc. The only difference is that after Steven reached his peak crisis, he had many friends and family to help and support him, whereas Pink had no-one, even though ultimately, both leave their home permanently. I always found it odd that no-one ever seemed to comment that adult Steven’s story is literally the same as Pink’s and that he’s going through the same things she did.

Steven didn't permanently leave beach City, he just left to figure himself out, and finally enjoy his life now without worrying about his planet, his friends and family, and his own life. Why would he permanently never come back to Beach City? His girlfriend and his family and friends are there. It's a temporary thing..

i like to think that Connie's mind is interpreting and trying to understand the physical image/memories/feelings in the dream just as much as she is able to, because she has never seen yellow diamond's face therefore her mind is adapting to her limited perception of what yellow could look like and is also at the same time warping in the image that Steven already has of yellow. the result is Connie's mom physical appearance with Yellow's eyes and voice.

Fantastic video, & honestly I'd alternately love to see contrasts between Steven's experience with Lapis in Can't Go Back & your current take on Jungle Moon. Another moon/colony centric episode that gave a lot while seemingly delivering something completely different at first. Including empathic dream flashbacks, plot reveals, & unexpected confirmations with Steven encouraging deescalation & closure with Lapis turning into ramped up escalation with Pink (& Pearl) confronting & failing to back out of her earlier commitments with the more experienced Yellow & Blue diamonds. I'm sure you can trace more nuance back to this episode's big reveal yet even a light analysis would be great.

Also, rather unrelated to my previous comment but I have privately noticed that this particular event (Stevonnie's adventure) is rather a big deal & I would surmise that the reveal that Rose was Pink Diamond wouldn't have happened if Steven & Connie hadn't reconciled from the events bridging the season four finale through Kevin Party. I am fully aware that there is a lot of flack for how Connie handled Steven's actions & I don't personally agree. (I consider both kids in line with their characterizations & repeatedly stated insecurities.) Harshing on Connie while giving Steven what seems like a free pass is very odd to me. They're both allowed to make mistakes & they're both allowed to recover whether they reunited or not. Yet Connie accompanying Steven out to visit Lars & mutually surviving their experiences on Jungle Moon is a testament to their growth & mutual forgiveness. Thus creating emotional & physical capacity to even experience/confront the falling together of pieces that eventually give the audience their big reveal. I think the fandom underestimates the maturity & compassion being subtly illustrated here. Connie's willingness to follow Steven deeper into his unknowns paves the way for the series finale on Homeworld & I think that's way undervalued by the analysis I've seen as someone who came back to the series later & was able to enjoy much of it (85%) spoiler free.
