I am building up a new engine for my 69 Mustang S-code. I recall watching this video a year back. I started by taking in the bare block to the local speed shop to have the block cleaned, magnafluxed and inspected. I knew the engine had come out of a 66 T-Bird and had never been rebuilt, it had factory bores still. Now we're in the process of securing all the parts to build it into a 445 FE. Only the block, main caps, and front timing cover are going to be original, the rest will be all new.

At the beginning the engine was said to come out of a dump truck. If I'm not mistaken, that would be an FT. Those had steel cranks and they probably tossed it. Also the blocks were beefier, had more meat around the cylinders.

Love the interest in the old FE block, I've built a few of them years ago. Impressive numbers from old iron and new tech. One SUPER cool thing about the FE is that you can mix and match things. The 360 becomes a 410 with a crank swap. Swap the intake and add headers and you've changed the engine for cheap.
@Bbbbad724
@Bbbbad724 Жыл бұрын
Hey Karl, Bill Ballinger I am still enthusiastic about the interest in the FE too. I still love them too. I do wish someone would make 351C heads and intake to fit them. That would be really cool! I have thought about how nice it would be. A445 cross bolt 2 and 4 main, put studs in and new dowels. It would be neat to half fill it and then the 4V closed chamber heads at 4.63 bore spacing and a big burly intake in a 67-70 Mustang!

@@karljay7473 The one and only. I m banned from them now for thinking that someone should make a 351C head at 4.63 bore spacing because it was the best head Ford ever made and I guess it pissed off all the guys hoarding CJ LR/MR/HR/TP heads. I just thought and even wrote a letter to Vic Edelbrock and Suggested that he should step up the FE with Cleveland at 4.63 and an intake way back before the Edelbrock heads came out. I guess he made the right choice, they are still their best sellers. I still wish he had taken my advice. The FE is a great design and it still makes great power from it’s design. The Cleveland head is the best OEM design. I really wished the two had been mixed. I fill blocks if I plan on 750 + using studs and crossbolted mains from Pro-Gram on 2 -4 with the stock thrust main. I have 3 that are still running on the street at 700 hp that I built 20 years ago. The FE heads are pretty good with the right work. But the Cleveland because of the cant and tilt are bolt them on and go if they had 4.63 bore spacing. Good to talk to you Karl! I hope your 410 truck is still going well!

Just some pointers on doing the 352 Most parts on the 352 are the same as the 390. Such as timing components. The 352 has the same block as the 390 so if you wanted to you could bore your 352 to a 390. If you are looking to get an easier shot at getting over 300 hp. It really would not be that much more to bore a 352 to a 390. If you are getting the cylinders honed by a machine shop. Also some stock parts for the 352 are getting hard to find. Such as the harmonic balancer and main cap bolts. However you could get aftermarket ones pretty easy. By the way the guy that said the 351w is just jealous that he doesn't have a 351 cleveland 😃

At a Goodguys show FiTech tech tried to tune it. In the end I had wasted 5k trying to make it work. I had a NOS tunnel wedge. Finally threw it all in trash. Total junk, appears they made changes now. A buddy of mine bought the base 300hp rated single 4 barrel FItech system when they first came out to put on his 302 ford. When we first put it on it was awesome, it started easy and ran great. But after about 1 month of use, the computer would loose memory and he would have to re write the whole tune or just pick one of the pre selected setting and just deal with it running crappy. It eventually got to the point where if he drove to the store, got out and came back 5 minutes later the whole tune would be gone and sometimes going down the road it would just shut off and loose memory or it would do weird things like idle at 2,000 rpm or idle at 500rpm, it was getting out of hand and since then I have had a grudge against FItech and I have read about many others dealing with the same problem, for all the time and money wasted on the FItech he could have just bought a brand new 650 double pumper and a jet kit and been done with it.

We drag race the Ford FE way back in the early 70’s. No one made any aftermarket stuff back then. You could get a aluminum intake but it wasn’t a better design that the cast iron it was just a lot lighter. We ran a 447 CI which was the standard 427 4.230 bore with a 428 crank which was 3.98. TRW made the pistons so it was a budget way to gain some cubic inches. Comp solid roller. Single Holley 850 with stock Ford Tunnel Port heads. It probably made about the same power as this combo. I would love to had the aftermarket pieces you guys had here to see what kind of power. With a standard bore 427 with the 4 1/4” stroke crank you guys used here it would be a 478 CI.

I love when people who won't spend 20 minutes setting up a Holley Carb take all week, two laptops and a chassis dyno to get fuel injection to work and then say the buzzwords "drivability" and "Throttle response", tossing in an "easy to tune." Sorry, I like the extra power of a carburetor. I get GREAT throttle response. I don't want to give up cam to have enough vacuum to make the EFI work, (also do stick shifts for the same reason), I can set up a properly sized carb in MINUTES with my little box of jets, power valves, and accelerator pump cams, and beat EFI on the dyno.

4 more horsepower. Now...honestly compare COST. Pretty sure I could add an extra carb, too...and go over 600.

Great show, glad you are doing engine's like the Ford FE series. But can't help thinking the price to HP output. You used top shelf parts, even fuel injection didn't seem to add as much as I thought it would. Sure it's easier, don't have to mess with it...but wasn't that the pride and fun? Yep, first time, old, enjoyed your show!

On a street engine like this, how about some dyno pulls from down around 2500 to 3000? I would love to see how low this engine still makes at least 500 ft/lbs of torque. Stop light to stop light, generous torque makes a performance vehicle that much more fun to drive. Great video! Great series! I used to be a Ford/Lincoln/Mercury parts guy from 1970 to 2009, so I grew up around and loved the FE Ford Big blocks.

I'm curious what the final price tag is on that FE engine. after building a half dozen of them I can tell you that the parts for those engine's are expensive. especially when compared to other engine's. something that they didn't mention in this project. is that a person has to install the distributor before they tighten the intake manifold bolts. otherwise they won't be able to install the distributor. since the distributor goes through the intake manifold and the machined area in the block that has to match up. just something that somebody who intends to build one of these engine's should know. along with the different way the rear main seal should be installed. because of these engine's being Y block engine's. that was amazing those dyno numbers showing only a twenty digit difference between the H. P. and the torque that's amazing no doubt.

I have installed a FiTech 38351 system on my Blueprint 427sb engine as the 1987 OBD1 couldn't be used anymore. I have been very happy with it and I wanted to see how much the FiTech system would add over the Blueprint carburetor system used for the base HP numbers from their factory. I was hoping that the fuel injection system would add more. This vid gives me an idea of how much more I can expect. Thanks guys.

Look at the power they got out of a NON-CRACKED 390 block. It is just as good to do this as a single 4V carburetor, it made the same amount of power as it did with the twin hoop-te-doo. I have accumulated most of these same aftermarket parts.

You should install EGTs and wide band O2s per exhaust port and compare each cylinder AFR and EGT. I know that there is plenty more efficiency on the table especially with that FI Tech kit. You can fatten up certain injection pulses to correct a cylinder.
