Welcome to the DIY and fun side of Law & Lumber!
If you're looking for a break from the daily news (who isn't?!?!?!), or a fun project to do with your family, here's a quick breakdown (start-to-finish) of how to take a $10 piece of wood from your local hardware store and turn it into the centerpiece of your kitchen. A funny thing about this resin art, it's impossible to make two of the exact same kind...so every single one that gets made is 100% original! In this video I take you step-by-step through making you're own custom centerpiece lazy susan by ASSISTING a friend (‪@GoodLawgic‬) in making one himself. If I can show Joe how to make one, it's definitely worth a try on your own!
Now, this was my first attempt at stitching something like this together for a video, so please be gentle, but I would also love to hear your thoughts in the comments. ALSO - if you have any questions, please ask them in the comments (believe it, or not - I do read and respond as much as I can). I also want to see all your finished pieces, so if you do upload them to Instagram, be sure to tag me (link below). I'll also post affiliate links to some of the products I used to make this particular piece. Thank you all for following along and please do enjoy!
Life is too short, so just get out there and go build something - trust me, you'll feel better!
PRODUCTS USED:
Art Resin - amzn.to/3J5NXMS
Black Diamond Pigments - amzn.to/3PDinZg
Alumilite Liquid Pigment - amzn.to/3PBFRy0
Graduated Disposable Mixing Cups - amzn.to/3z9Y2DP
Lazy Susan Hardware - amzn.to/3cM4s4k

I watch some artists that use "dutch pour" techniques. Sometimes they blow the paints, sometimes they stretch the colors around, and sometimes they have epoxy resin in the paints rather than after the painting dries. This is the same idea. How beautiful. I love working with wood. And I love drawing and painting. I've never done them together. Truly a work of art Rob 😊❤

This is so fun! I’m partway through, but Joe had me cracking up. R: “what’s your favorite color?” J: “I’m not a girl….” R: “so you want dark colors?🤔” J “I’m not a girl…I don’t have a favorite color. Well, I like to wear green. It brings out my eyes.” 🤣🤣 Joe, you realize you just said the girliest thing there. Edit: and then we get to the fire in the pants story…😂😂 I’m loving the chemistry lesson.

The ending just gave me such Mr. Rogers vibes! ❤️ As a side note, Rob, it’s my understanding that all epoxy resins create toxic fumes, some just don’t smell as bad, so we’re not as aware of them. But all should be used outside or in well ventilated areas with proper PPE. What I’ve heard is that companies can get away with saying their products are non-toxic because the individual components as sold aren’t toxic, but once combined, the chemical reaction is toxic, and it’s sneaky and underhanded advertising and packaging. I’d love if you could shed some light on that from the legal perspective.

Congratulations on the play button in the background! I wasn't quite sure of the colors you chose at first lol but I should have trusted you. ;) Once the resin had finished spreading, and the lazy susan ended up looking like a marble cut, the color choice was obviously correct. The finished product looks amazing, Rob! You make it look so easy that I'm tempted to go out & get the necessary products to try it myself (this looks like it would make really cool little faux marble looking coasters - have you ever tried something like that?).

In the UK we have a stone called Purbeck Stone, it's found on the South coast, which is also referred to as the Jurassic coast. This stone is packed full of fossils, this was before it set almost identical to a magnified ammonite caught for millions of years in that stone, gorgeous. My one sadness with resin pours is that you can lose awesome patterns as it dries, however, you created a masterpiece yet again, you definitely have a magic touch. Thank you so much for this video it was perfect. Have a lovely weekend best wishes from London

If you listen to Joe - and I dont mean this video but rather any video where he talks about a random subject - you should do it closely and try to find if he EVER has any "principles" OR if "I dont care" is his reply. The latter will be the case most of the time, because "not having any opinion" is easy ... which is also the problem with Joe (Niermann AND Rogan). We NEED "values" for a society and not having any sounds great from a libertarian self-centered perspective, but that isnt "a society" but rather "a bunch of individuals" instead.

The mobile bit I made myself as we don't have these types of fixings where I live and they are expensive online - I took a round plant pot tray, glued a smaller one in the middle leaving a Channel of about 2.5 inches. Filled the channel with small marbles from a poundshop. Place the board on top. Its surprisingly stable and cost less than £2.

Instead of straw, may I suggest an air blower? It's similar to a turkey baster but smaller with a smaller tube for the air to flow out. Tim Holtz has one for about $10 (I mention this one specifically because I have it) but there are other types etc branded as a dust cleaning product too. Ppl use them on their keyboards and camera lenses. There are smaller ones used for cleaning kids noses too, though they would probably be too small... breathing that close to the project when using a straw can be dangerous as your breathing more of the fumes in. If using a straw make sure to back away from the project when inhaling to blow Also, try a silicone mat under the project... after the resin has cured sufficiently, you can peel it off the silicone and cut into shapes or whatever... could use as embelishments in deeper pours... that way you have nearly no waste

Tip from an acrylic pour artist here on KZfaq , take a stir stick and knock off the drips from the underside a few times until they stop, you won’t have as difficult a time removing the tape. You’ll also get a little less movemement- the drips are pulling the paint off the edges. I love the finished project!

I’m a splasher OF paint for a living 🙂, (some of my pieces are quite similar to Robs here, actually). I use a washing machine pan to set my canvases in, the paint peels off once dried. Also, I use squeeze bottles for my paint, (like for condiments/oils) so no spills and not too much paint at one time from pouring it. I hope some of that is helpful, if you do want to try something like this, you can facilitate your mess and avoid spills

I felt like I was being hypnotized while watching the colors melt across the circle. Why is this so fascinating?!!!

I had to google what a lazy Susan is, tbh. the music bit in the beginning was a tad loud and I had trouble to make out what you are saying but excited for the video, you are doing great

Beautiful! To “knock down the air bubbles” can I use a hair dryer? I appreciate the slow step by step directions and the gentle cadence of your tone of voice. I’d LOVE to see more of these easy projects!

A heat gun would be better. A hair dryer will distort your design and isn't really hot enough.

Interesting how different the speeds with which Joe and Rob stir, dare I say it matches their demeanor sometimes 🤔
