In this video we will be taking a look at the Just Flight Tornado F3 within Prepare3d P3D V5.2.
This video will not be a full review; however, we will be taking an in-depth look at the aircraft. We will be departing out of RAF Valley, heading South along the coast towards the Mach Loop! We'll run the aircraft around the loop and the head for home. On our return leg, we'll meet up with the tanker and take on some fuel, before returning back for an ILS and landing onto runway 13.
Please note this video and all its contents / materials, is for entertainment / simulation purposes only.

Man I'd love to have a Tornado in DCS. I remember Digital Integration''s old Tornado flight sim from the 90s that was a ton of fun. I hope MSFS gets to the state where more complex military supersonic planes like this can be simulated decently. Failing that JF should port their Hawker Hunter over as I love that plane. Thanks for the vid! Looking forward to your official Mach Loop time trial in the future.

Likewise! I think it’d be number one on my list of aircraft I’d like to see in DCS. Sadly it seems anything British, post-WWII, doesn’t garner much interest from developers (and I believe it’s still hard to get all of the required documentation for most aircraft). I guess the Brits / MOD worry that someone might still want to copy some 60+ year old technology haha). I guess we are getting the Eurofighter, but I’m not toooo fussed about that personally. . . I think the tornado will be good fun in MSFS, but yeah, it really needs to be in DCS! My pleasure on the vid! Im sure it will get its chance around the Mach Loop one day ; )

@@IntotheBlueSimulations Yeah British military secrecy is a bit insane with stuff being classified for way longer then it really needs to be. I remember reading something about how parts of the Lightning are still classified (mainly its ancient radar I thnk) and that's getting on a bit now! Other countries operated the Tonka though and it'd likely be a lot easier to access say German technical manuals and such. Kinda like how the Eurofighter in development for DCS is based on a Tranche 1 German version as it's probably easier to get blood out of a stone than it is to get any detailed technical info out of the MOD (that and I think the lead dev on the Eurofighter project is a former German air force pilot)
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 2 жыл бұрын
Haha, yes, we must have read the same info - I heard exactly the same thing about the Lightnings radar. Quite amusing really! The Lightning is another jet I would love to try in DCS (though I’m not sure I’d actually want one in the sim, as I think you’d run out of things to do in it rather quickly). I see there’s a Vulcan mod coming out as well, that could be good fun! Well, fingers crossed maybe one day we’ll get the Tonka. I was just watching some stuff on the DCS Eurofighter - I’m warming to the idea. Would be good fun to try and upstage a few of those yank fighters for a change! ; ) Cheers!

Thanks, my pleasure! Thanks for the info: I gather the fuel feed issues were fixed up (I think I have flown the aircraft since then)? It's a shame to hear that the aircraft still gives quite an FPS hit, but I suppose with it being fairly complex, there is only so much Just Flight can do on that front. Thanks very much Pedro! It’s a good question / point you raise actually. Not being a review, I didn’t think to check the FPS and I didn’t notice any impact on smoothness at the time; but actually the aircraft is very FPS intensive. Compared with the default F-35 (under the exact same conditions), I found the F3 was costing me around 40FPS! So it is a very framerate hungry aircraft (and probably similar to the GR1 by the sounds of it). Probably not the news you wanted to hear, but I hope it’s useful info at any rate. Question: What weather engine / textures are you running in P3D?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Stewie, I use ActiveSky for the weather engine. For the textures it’s just default. I have enhanced atmospherics turned on, but volumetric clouds turned off (an option now available in V5.2). I find the volumetric clouds are nothing special in P3D and have quite a big hit on the frame rate - so I leave them off (I actually think the 2D sprites in P3D look quite good also). Hope that helps! : )

Really interesting run! One question, concerning the A/P. On airliners and such, there's a selection knob that you wind up/down to your intended altitude, speed etc, how does this work in the Tornado? Do you select autopilot when you've reached the required speed or altitude, which it then holds? Finally, what if you were at say 3978ft when you selected autopilot, would it round up to 4000 and then maintain that? My second question. I notice you have stores on the outboard pylons. My understanding is that the F3 didn't use these in service, instead being fitted with AN/ALE-40 chaff dispensers underneath the fuselage aft of the missile rails and (I presume) some kind of internal ECM instead of the BOZ-107/Skyshadow combo the GR force used. Do you know of the F3 ever using the outboard pylons? Corgi made a model of the F3 from the Falklands 1435 flight which had double missile rails on these pylons for AIM-9/ASRAAM, which would give a rather impressive loadout of 4x AMRAAM and 8x ASRAAM! I'm not sure if this was ever employed in reality though it does make the model look rather warry! Hope all that rambling made sense, haha. Love watching these!
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 11 ай бұрын
Hi SP, Thanks very much, I’m really glad you enjoyed the flight! I’m by no means an expert when it comes to the F3 (though I’d love to be haha), but to answer your questions to the best of my abilities (and the best of my recollection, as this flight was quite some time ago now): From memory, the Tornado has selections for HDG / CRS, as well as an autothrottle with the ability to set a target speed. The vertical mode of the autopilot, was an ALT HLD mode only. ALT HLD needs to be selected at the desired altitude and I don’t believe there is any compensation / rounding - the AP will hold whatever altitude the aircraft was at, when the ALT HLD mode is engaged. Speed can be pre-selected and the autothrottle will adjust accordingly. Regarding external stores, that’s rather outside my scope of knowledge; most pictures online would seem to confirm your assertion, though there does seem to be a couple of pics with an F3 in the configuration depicted by the Just Flight addon. Presumably, the config depicted by Just Flight is a potential, though little used setup on the F3. . . Many thanks again! I hope the above clarified things a little. All the best : )
@Davespink1980
@Davespink1980 3 ай бұрын
The F3 had flare dispensers on the engine doors aft of the fuselage missile launchers. During Op Telic the F3 flew with a towed radar decoy unit, which in this video would be the LH outboard pylon and a Phimat chaff dispenser on the other outboard pylon. Regarding 1435 flt loadout, if i remember correctly 4 x AMRAAM, 2 x ASRAAM and the gun. There was never any outboard pylons fitted and I have never seen any weapons carried on the outboard positions on the F3 or GR Tornados. Outboard pylons had chaff and flare dispensers and ecm pods in my time with them.

I’m certainly no expert (I’m okay with the probe in DCS, not so hot with the boom method though) but like most things, I think it’s just a question of practice. I think in *some* respects, it’s actually probably a little easier in reality; you have more visual cues in your peripheral vision, a better sense of depth and relative speed, as well as more granular control of the aircraft (when compared with the average sim controls / setup). Of course there are other aspects of the real-world that make it more difficult; atmospheric conditions, wake turbulence etc. I find its much harder to pull off in other sims vs DCS. I think many other sims lack the fidelity in their flight modelling to really make it work. It was tough going trying to hold station with the L1011 here for example. Agreed though; hats off to the ladies and gents that actually manage to do it! I would love to have a go myself, just to see if I could pull it off haha. Hey mate I fly these fighter jets on Gta5. If you've ever played gta5 is the feel of flying the same or better than gta 5?
@IntotheBlueSimulations
@IntotheBlueSimulations 3 жыл бұрын
I have played GTA V, but only very briefly and many years ago + think I only tried one of the passenger jets. Overall I would say there isn’t too much to compare. Not to say one is “better” than the other, but an addon such as this has a lot more fidelity in terms of its flight modelling (as well as its systems etc). If I recall correctly, GTA whilst very smooth and pleasant to fly, was somewhat basic in terms of the more advanced parts of the flight model (it may be that things have come on a long way since I tried it though)? I think it would be the same as comparing GTA V driving, with IRacing, RFactor etc. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, but one does a much better job at recreating real-world characteristics of course. P3D is quite an old sim now though and starting to show its age. The F3 is a lovely offering from Just Flight, but the sim holds it back a little bit - P3D graphics aren’t great and it stutters a bit etc. If you want to get as close as possible (in a sim) to flying one of these types of aircraft, DCS would once again be the best way to go in my opinion. If you can fly them in GTA V, whilst the systems might take some time to get used to, I expect you’d most likely have the aptitude to fly them in any sim. Does that answer your question Matt, or was I just rambling haha? All the best : )

Hi Jeffrey, The short answer is; a bit of study haha! I am a real pilot, though sadly on nothing nearly this exciting - obviously it helps give me a bit of baseline knowledge though. I’ve enjoyed flight simming for almost as long as I can remember, so I’m pretty used to sitting down with a manual and figuring a new aircraft out. Usually it’s really a case of learning the differences, as most aircraft have quite a bit in common. The F3 was actually one of the trickier aircraft I’ve had to learn to date though. For a video like this, typically it will take me about a day of reading + practice and I’ll have enough of a grip on the aircraft that I’m happy to record. Obviously very geeky to some, but I very much enjoy it! All the best! : )
