Just a Few Acres Farm

This fence is driving me nuts! And the cows are out again. It seems like no matter how many weeds I clean off of it, it never gets any hotter. This is a job that requires stubborn perseverance, and I'll get to the bottom of it!

There are a couple of wheel/hover attachments available for weed eaters so the weight is rested on the ground and takes the pressure off your hands and back. I bought a really cheap weed eater with a wheel to test it out and it really does make a difference. Enough that I’ll be getting the ryobi weed eater I want and adding wheels to it. Look on Amazon.

Ive had troubles the last couple years with them getting out.Last year I bought that charger. I installed it where the line is stretched over 150 feet above the field. It blew the fuse about 10 times because the solid smooth wire vibrated the unit so much. This year i figured it out,I put a 10 foot strand of braded copper from the unit to the smooth wire. Now she hits 7000. Keep the videos coming and dont let that little ground problem discourage you Boss!

Persistence goes a long way. I learned that when thru hiking the Pacific Crest Trail. All you have to do is get up every morning and walk north. Just keep going, day in and day out. Some days you knock off 30 miles. Some days only 15. Either way, its progress. Eventually you'll get to Canada. Just keep checking & fixing the insulators and cutting the brush and grass back and you'll eventually get to a fully energized fence. Persistence will pay off.

I keep the pastures mowed nicely during the year. I let my neighbors cattle roam, but he has been making hay this year on the fields.

I know you're not usually keen on advice on how to farm, so I'll say this: if I had a feeding set up in my barn like you do, I'd put a board or a wire or two across the bottom of my "manger" feeders to keep the calves out of my hay until they are too big to fit through the bars.

Maybe what you need is something like the old Jari walk behind sickle bar mower. I think Troy-Built sold one also. The cutting bars on them are center mounted but I bet it wouldn't be that hard to offset the blade to one side. It would be more maneuverable around all those fence post than the H with a 7 foot (9 foot?)bar. But no matter what, you'll have to get out there with at least a weed eater to do the final trim around each post. My dad used to send me out to do the electric fences with a pair of hedge trimmers and a knife. Have fun.

There used to be a DR mower made to hook to a tractor that was a string trimmer that was spring loaded for trimming fence lines, you come to a post and it rotates out then back under the fence without changing the tractors path. Time saved for you would pay for it pretty quick. Have a great day.

With our fence charger I find that the plants do not kill the fence. Whenever the green lights are not working on our charger, the hot wire is touching a ground, somewhere. We seem to have fat deer who cannot make it over a four foot electric fence. This continuously causes problems. The deer seem to twist the top hot wire with the ground wire. I also found that Tractor Supply has poor plastic electric fence fixtures. I buy Gallagher which seem to hold up much longer. Just a thought or two.

HEY PETE, READ THIS! Ok, I hope I got your attention. When I had my fields bordered with electric fences I installed a cut out switch at the beginning of every run. This way if I had a problem I could start at the last switch, cut it off and test the rest up to that point. If I still had the problem I cut the switch back on and went to the next switch repeating the process. When you cut out the line with the problem you know immediately that it's between the switches. I could go out and find a short within forty five minutes. But, this also allowed me to cut out that section with the short so I could work on it without having to go all the way back to the barn to unplug my charger. This is a $5.00 knife switch from Amazon. Mine was from tractor supply but now there's options for less money. Have a great weekend and I hope you give this some thought. If you need any info feel free to let me know. -Russ (Florida)
