Just a Few Acres Farm

I discovered an automatic bull herder! The problem is, it only works some of the time...
It's another busy day on the farm. Morning chores are in full swing with the chickens and cattle on pasture, and a brooder house full of chicks. We pick up pork from the butcher and I show you some of the cuts. Then we have to round up the Dexter cattle to separate the bulls, and I get to try my automatic bull herder. With the bulls separated, we head out to the pasture to fence a new paddock for the rest of the cattle. A busy day!

Pete - Every time I see you out with the manure spreader, I remember my Dad who was an old farm boy from the '20's and 30's. He liked the old joke about the manure spreader manufacturer who refused to stand behind his product.

Pete, another great video. You have a great sense of humor. Came across this joke on the internet and thought you'd like it: A carload of hunters, looking for a place to hunt, pulled into a farmers yard. The driver went up to the farmhouse to ask permission to hunt. The old farmer said, "Sure you can hunt, but would you do me a favor? That old mule standing over there is 20 years old and sick with cancer, but I don't have the heart to kill her. Would you do it for me?" The hunter said, "Sure," and headed for the car. While walking back, however, he decided to pull a trick on his hunting buddies. He got into the car and when they asked if the farmer had said OK, he said "No, we can't hunt here, but I'm going to teach that old cuss a lesson." With that, he rolled down his window, stuck his gun out and blasted the mule. As he exclaimed, "There, that will teach him!" a second shot rang out from the passenger side. And, one of his hunting buddies shouted, "I got the cow!"

Been watching you since 2020. Hoping to make the farm life leap in the next decade. I discovered you by looking up Dexters on you tube and got hooked. I hope to find someone like you one day that can teach me the little things that often go unnoticed about farm life. Keep up the dream sir, God bless

Pete I just wanted to take time out and thank you for your videos they're entertaining and very encouraging at times like you may have read it another comment I left I recently had a heart attack at age 45 and I'm basically stuck either on my bed or in front of my computer because I'm trying to recover I just started walking 3 weeks ago on my own. I'm still connected to a catheter because I'm unable to function properly. I'm doing my best to return back to normal only 25% of my heart is working 75% of my heart is dead. I had a stent put in my main valve the one that called the Widowmaker because it was 100% clogged. A blood clot had went to my heart causing a pulmonary embolism. But through all that God has kept me. And I appreciate people like you you may not think that your videos reach very many but everything you do on the farm is fascinating and I thank you for taking your camera along and showing us what you do everyday and just being yourself and think your wife as well you folks are just down home people that I would love to meet I appreciate your videos and new people very much. You keep a young man that's going through a lot encouraged and keep a smile on my face thank you my friend.

I worked on 2 of the 4 dairy farms on my street from 11 into my teen years, but I was only involved with milking cows, haying, silage, manure spreading & nipple-bucket feeding calves ( & some intimidation from the angus bull who protected & inseminated the herd ), but you seem to have a much fuller plate than I did, with all of the other animals that you manage. Congratulations to you two for all that you accomplish & creating content as well. I knew that I wasn't going to be a farmer for my career because I never saw one take a vacation!!!

Hi Pete! I'm new to your channel and I love it! You know, I love farming and when I was a boy, that's what I wanted to do. Or, be a pilot. Whenever I talked about my aspirations with my family, my older brother would tease the hell out of me. cupping his two hands together and saying, 'Plant my seeds!' It didn't really bother me too much, but I ended up being a pilot, first in the Air Force for 10 years and now with a major airline for the last 28 years. I have a little less than 3 years before mandatory retirement, and I'd like nothing more than to buy a few acres out in Montana or Idaho and grow hay. Thanks again for sharing your farming life with your family. You figured out the key to happiness!

Thanks for sharing. It was nice to see what your chores are looking like and a bit of a day in the life. Why don't you grass finish? Dexters look like they would be good at it. We grass finish our lambs and culls. They come out nice and marbled. I think some customers chose our meat because it's grass finished.
@JustaFewAcresFarm
@JustaFewAcresFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Dexters are excellent when finished on grass, and that is how we’ve always raised them. Unfortunately we had an extremely dry summer last year, and poor forage impacted meat quality. We are trying adding some corn as an experiment with this batch to see how it affects flavor & tenderness.
@swamp-yankee
@swamp-yankee 3 жыл бұрын
@@JustaFewAcresFarmAh, I see. I wonder if you will notice a flavor difference. My grandpa was a conventional cattlemen and he said he wouldn't eat anything that hadn't been "cleaned out with corn". I generally look for grass fed meat if I buy any. I'm a bit north of you, and also struggled with last seasons drought. My sheep are super mobile though, and luckily I was able to bring my finishers to some extra grass on a customers farm in town as their tenant's cows broke out and walked home in late July. They had three cows on about 15 acres, and I was able to graze my finishing lambs until their date in early December. They finished well enough since the farm had been brush hogged after the spring flush and the day after we took them we got two feet of snow!
