I honestly think we should definitely point something like this out, as long as you have a good intention! Don’t tell someone, they look too skinny, that will just affirm them (at least that’s my experience), but telling them they look exhausted or sick and that you’re worried can sometimes be necessary. And while you should generally only say that to people you are close with, if someone publicly promotes their unhealthy lifestyle, it’s also the right thing to call it out if they don’t look healthy to help other people. Little story, my mom went on a very restrictive diet as a teenager, even though she was already slim, because her friend’s mother did that. She lost weight, friends told her they were worried because she looked malnourished. That’s what she needed to hear to realize that what she was doing was unhealthy, so she stopped. I know when you already have an ed it’s not that easy, but I think it shows that telling someone they don’t look “good” can be the right thing to do.

In medicine we don‘t give people their nutrients through an IV unless it is absolutely necessary - IVs are for people who are so sick they cannot eat or drink or keep it inside. We always try to switch patients back to oral intake, once it is possible because the physiological route is always better. Not to mention the scarring of the veins each time you receive an IV which will make it harder to place one and to receive medical treatment in the future. I really hope people listening to the podcast can differentiate that.

This!! Plus parenteral nutrition can’t be injected into superficial veins, you need the deep ones. And the infectious risk with parenteral nutrition is very very high. Like you said we do it when it’s absolutely vital and 100% necessary

As someone with anorexia, you hit the nail on the head when you said the hyper fixation on “when’s the next meal”. Also, when she said she eats early… that’s because she’s hungry and she wants to get her food in because as soon as possible, hence an “early dinner”. she’s obsessed… and then fasts. Classic ED behavior. Classic. Vintage… I can’t help but feel a bit bad because EDs are an intrusive nightmare that’s hard to sleep off

When Gwyenth said she does an "IV", I thought it was like a trendy name for a vitamin or something. But no, she legit meant putting a NEEDLE in her arm and intravenously feeding liquid nutrients into her body like that, what the FUCK. That's so extreme. Why would anyone want to do this to themselves if they absolutely didn't need to?

Ok, before even watching the rest of the video. I will say that GP wellness hacks not only are expensive, they are dangerous. This intravenous trend seems to try to ignore millions of years of evolution. Guts and livers have developed to optimize vitamine intake from food in a way that works for our body. Hypervitaminosis is a thing… a serios one at that. But may we all burn at the stake of wellness 🙄. Again, I have so many issues with these people propagating misinformation.
@allison5487

I get IV vitamins, specifically the Meyer's cocktail. I have celiac disease and pernicious anemia so my body doesn't absorb enough vitamins from food. The IV and IM vitamins were prescribed by my doctor. Now that my health issues are under control, I don't get IV prescriptions anymore. But I still occasionally will get an IV at a medspa when I'm feeling really crappy. I have been to many IV spas over the years and they've always prepared my bag in front of me. I've checked the dosages. I've never been to one that would have given a dangerous dose of anything (for an average, healthy person). And the spa staff physically administering them are very commonly EMTs doing it as a side job. IV spas are unnecessary for the average, healthy person. As are most wellness trends. But it still feels great and is hydrating. As long as a person's doctor is fine with it, and they're aware of risks, I don't see the problem with it. It would be problematic to use it as a regular replacement for healthful eating. But I don't see the IVs as problematic in general.
@JustinaErcole

But you’re describing your specific situation. Most people don’t have your medical conditions. I’m thrilled that you’ve found things that help you, but they were prescribed by your doctor. It doesn’t mean they’re meant for everyone.

Plus, there are definitely risks to IVs. Not like, massive risks, obviously, but certainly more risks than just eating real food or taking a damn vitamin if that's your thing. Those actions don't involve a needle in your vein, a foreign object that introduces the potential for infection. But I suppose to the crowd of people Gwen belongs with, they've probably undergone way more risky things for the sake of appearance and "wellness" so a little jab in the arm is nothing.

I believe in taking care of myself, but I can't imagine being *this* obsessed with my "wellness routine". It seems like it takes up a huge percentage of Gwyneth's life, like she can't relax and truly enjoy anything because "detoxing" (i.e., staying thin) takes precedence over everything else. That's very sad, and I feel for her if she is struggling, but she is still a danger to others when she peddles her snake oil. The other guy is great, too, for straight up admitting he peddles horseshit and then telling people to buy his book. Grifters gotta grift, I guess.

[TW] it was really painful for me to watch this GP wellness starving routine video because for over a decade I've been legitimizing my eating disorders myself by reading these kinds of things about other people on a regular basis. I have to admit that back when I was studying I read a lot of Star Magazin to balance things out and of course I also consumed a lot of this eating disordered behavior and didn't understand at the time that this media is still normalizing eating disorders in a very problematic way and not just that are a problem for people who develop eating disorders as a result, but it's also incredibly difficult when you have a history of eating disorders. For me it is almost impossible to find a place here in Germany where I can do sports in a group without being taken into account that I had an eating disorder ... no, I have to build up the residence myself to listen away or to set limits, instead of critically questioning how problematic our relationship in society is to the topic of nutrition and being slim and that there is also this very problematic side of structural discrimination against people who are not conform to the slim ideal of beauty… it was incredibly difficult for me and it took me more than ten years to admit my eating disorders because I kept telling myself: that's just discipline, I'm only doing it for my health and didn't understand, that's basically it taken extreme damage to my health over the years, and even when I was extremely damaged, I continued this behavior. I would simply wish that we would now be smarter about this topic and that it really is about health and a better quality of life for everyone and not just about a slim ideal of beauty under the pretext that it is about health Can we talk about the media which publish that content?

A few thoughts about this craziness: Her routine makes a lot more sense if you substitute the word “wellness” with “thinness”. The only thing that could explain the obsession with juices, broth and vitamin IVs is that she had a phobia about chewing! The rectal ozone therapy makes perfect sense. I mean her smugness does suggest she thinks the sun shines out of her a-hole, so this explains how it got there in the first place.😎 It cannot be denied though that she is an amazing businesswoman. I mean I just bought one of her jade eggs and, being a man I will probably just use it as a paperweight, but kerching!💰

to me it sounds like someone with arfid who avoids certain food textures and sticks to bunch of safe foods. that type of diet can lead to malnoutrition and being under/overweight (depends on what type of foods the diet is based on). i have arfid and i used to rely on dietary supplements because at that time it somehow felt more logical than actually expanding my list of safe foods and trying to get more nutrients that way 😬 arfid is very underdiagnosed, sadly.

It's unfair how people expect women who were famous back in the day to still look exactly the same and some are pushed to dangerous lengths to look like they did at 25. That said - yes she does look unwell. I'm hoping it's just the combination of lighting and little to no make up that's making her look washed out.

People who have a nutritionally sound diet and lifestyle don't need to be detoxing. And that effing IV; I'm SO sick of celebrities and their IVs. The "Real Housewives" do them all the time to cure hangovers. It's too sickening and grotesque for words how these uber rich a-holes abuse these things and there are people out there who can't afford their NECESSARY Rx medications. She's rather disgusting. She eats like a demented character from "The Crimson Petal and the White" who boasted she only ate "beef broth for lunch" and if she's extra hungry at supper she'll "eat a plate of green beans."

When I get overweight to an obese level, I have tried healthy keto which involves just eating normal meat not processed ones and loads of vegetables and some fat. It does help me to lose weight dramatically along with intermittent fasting. So these things work. Though it will not be a life long commitment, these diet do help if you want to lose weight and have some discipline. As long as you know when to stop and eat proper meals make your life satisfied, that is all that matters.

@@JustinaErcole I eat almost zero carbs, more fats in terms of butter, heavy cream, nuts and cheese and a huge chunk of veggies and some protein that are natural . My carb intake as such is negligible. So it is keto and I do check my urine to ensure I can see ketones in it. So I am going through Ketosis. On top, IF. Even doing it since two weeks and lost 4 kgs already. So the stuff do work but cannot maintain for years.

I'm such a huge fan of you and your channel, Justina! I don't necessarily disagree with anything you've said here, but on the topic of responsibility, I think if you're going to do a deep dive like this, you should listen to the full interview. We tend to see a small clip and create a full opinion, which at best is bad for our critical thinking, and at worst, damaging and dangerous. Gwyneth absolutely has some beyond-red flag and out of touch habits, but she also talks a lot more about the actual food she eats, as well as her food intolerances and health issues that lead her to make the choices she does. The way these clips are edited is misleading. (I want to be clear: I don't normally listen to this podcast, nor do I follow Gwyneth and her routines. I only did because I saw at the drama and I'm nosy / like to be informed.) You could listen to it and have the exact same opinion about her routine, and that's fine! This isn't me defending Gwyneth Paltrow, it's about seeing the full picture before solidifying an opinion. Just my two cents :)

Not trying to defend GP because Goop is whack, but I think you were overly harsh. She gave a very general and brief idea of her diet and everyone took it as if that is ALL she eats. She generalized what she eats. She said she eats Paleo and a lot of vegetables. In none of these cases do we actually know how much she ate of anything. I think Kiana Docherty did a very rational take on this GP video and how everyone was taking it really out of context. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m9N6Z6mlvqjTc2Q.html Also, saying she looks sick is in poor taste. To me, she just looks like a thin 40-50 something year old woman and like she's not wearing make-up. Yet again, I don't support GP and think the idea of detoxing and using an IV is absolutely ridiculous but I think your take on this was a bit off in some areas.

I generally agree with you but you shouldnt put all naturopathic and functional medicine in the same box. Like Dr.Oz pushes a lot of nonense but no one says that all MDs are quacks. You can get certified by reputable institutions in functional medicine, I even know a lot of MDs/nurses who learn about functional medicine later on in their career.

Gwen looks weak. She has no glow about her anymore. Intermittent and even a moderate fasting regimen have been proven to be healthful ( just read a National Geographic article this week about it). But that's not her issue. She seems to be lacking adequate protein and chasing non caloric health regimens. It sounds very unhealthy...her eating sounds quite disordered. It's sad.
