I’m with you that the gym isn’t a replacement for therapy but I think the gym for general stress management is way underrated
@dinalee-ramirez6462
@dinalee-ramirez6462 Жыл бұрын
agree! The gym is not a substitute for therapy. At the same time I love to see it as a form of mindfulness/meditation. It gives me permission to stay in the present by focusing on my workouts and breathing and also leaving my problems “outside of the gym” for a bit. Which has helped me a lot with managing my anxiety. But I think people confuse that a lot with therapy, both are soooo helpful!

Yesssss!!! If I hear one more influencer recommend protein powder instead of eating food, imma scream. However, the only part I wish people talked more about is vitamin deficiencies for omnivores and carnivores. Yes, plant based eaters can have deficiencies if they're not paying attention but people not eating plants need panels too. I would argue that omnivores pay less attention to what they eat than plant based eaters. Such a great video!!!
@JustinaErcole

For sure! But influencers shouldn't be recommending supplements for deficiencies unless they're giving you personalized care and are an RD or your doctor.

To me the only "necessary" supplement that never seems to get mentioned is folic acid for women who are pregnant or plan to TTC in 3 months, but yeah, in general supplements < slow gradual improvements to diet. I take vitamin D because I have hypothyroidism, and fish oil because my cholesterol panel wasn't great, but I stopped taking a multi because we have a pretty varied diet at home. Also I might have to check out that split squat video, thanks. I have some muscle imbalances I need to work on.

My job has a lot of walking, it’s really increased my endurance. My husband uses Pedialyte powder in the summer. He works as a driver/ mover in Phoenix, and highs are 100-118. He got really dehydrated a couple of times, it was scary. I was hoping you’d say pushups were overrated haha! Yes, I agree exercise isn’t therapy. Exercise does reduce my anxiety, research has shown it’s as effective as antidepressants. But it’s no substitute for therapy, it’s best to have both.

OMG, I hate pushups so much! I've been hounded by PE teachers and trainers about it so much. I'm physically unable to do them and people don't believe me. I had a brain injury when I was born and the muscles on my left side don't all have a connection. On my upper arm and thigh I can't flex a muscle. If I ever do a pushup I can only do it with my right arm. I guess it would be an invisible disability.

I work in boiler rooms in commercial and industrial buildings all winter and 100degree roofs all summer. And I’m a rock climber. I definitely use electrolyte powders like liquid iv. though I actually have just as good results with the much cheaper propel packets. The only supplement I “need” and use is a preworkout. And that is because I have to get up at 4-4:30am to get my workout in and I don’t drink coffee. Preworkout is my substitution for that because I like the taste. I have a friend that is always trying to convince me I need to keep trying coffee until I find the way I like the taste and all. But why? Why do I need to go through all that when I’m fine having one (3/4) of a scoop of pre instead? No thanks. Also I slightly disagree about the gym being therapy. Sure, it’s no substitute for actual therapy but I do think it’s more than just simply moving your body. I do notice the benefit to my mental health when I’m regularly working out vs when I’m not. I am more calm and have more patience with others and I’m generally in a better mood. Is real therapy still needed? Absolutely. But working out puts me in a better place to receive that therapy.
@JustinaErcole
@JustinaErcole Жыл бұрын
Sure, the gym is great for your mental health. But it's simply not therapy. I read for my mental health, but it's not therapy. I play Animal Crossing for my mental health, but it's not therapy. Therapy is therapy. The gym is the gym. There are overlap in benefits, but the gym is NOT therapy.

I'm actually going to disagree with your point, on that going to the gym/working out is NOT therapy. Personally, obviously with everything take it with a grain a salt, but working out at least for me, is kathartic. Yes, I'm putting physical stress onto my body, but I feel so much better afterwards. I am also a mountain runner. I tend to spend hours our nature and just think to myself I think about nothing and everything when I'm out there I talk about my problems, and it is very therapeutic. I would like some discussion with us as well with you.

Just because something is therapeutic doesn’t make it therapy. By this logic, animal crossing is therapy because I find it therapeutic.

As long as their doctor approves it, absolutely! But to make a blanket statement or any recommendation is outside my scope of practice.
