I remember when I had to look at the guitar to change chords. I remember when bar chords were hard to do. I also remember when I couldn't sing an play at the same time. But now all that's gone. Practice practice practice. You will get there! Thank you Justin, I learned from you.

If it helps anyone, I started playing in lockdown 1 (June 2020), I do have a musical background (drummer), BUT I cannot recommend this man highly enough. In the short time I’ve been playing, his beginners course, videos and advice have been so remarkable and second to none. - He is a musical treasure ... even if you play, I guarantee you’ll learn something ... a truly naturally gifted teacher. Thanks Justin (off to practice my strumming!)

This is so helpful. I am learning late in life. I was grinding so hard on keeping the right rhythm, I wasn't feeling the right rhythm. You are keeping many people from quitting and you are helping them advance.

When you first start out you should learn song’s completely. The whole song. Then learn three or four all the way through. You want to be able to play something if you have a guitar in your hands if somebody asks for a song. Justin is good for this. He gives you songs that are like that and some quite tough. He’s a good teacher.

Thank you Justin for the tip about consistent strumming, keeping the arm motion going even when not touching the strings. I've watched videos by other creators before, but that particular point was never so clearly noted. Your communication and teaching style are just as fluid as you urge your learners to be with their guitars.

This is best guitar lesson I’ve had in 40 years. Great advice I wish I’d had when I first tried to learn guitar. It would have saved me countless hours unlearning really bad habits. I really wanted to learn finger style because I can’t sing to save my life but I loved the sound of the guitar. However, now decades later I definitely realize my journey would have been far easier had I’d first learned to strum properly and develop the sense of rhythm.

I’ve gone through your old beginner course, all the intermediate modules and your music theory course. You have absolutely changed my life. A year and a bit ago I couldn’t play anything on guitar. Now I can improvise, have a quite a few Hendrix tunes under my belt and feel comfortable playing. Without you my progress would have taken ten times as long. I hope you realize what an absolutely massive impact you have on tons of people these days. Keep up the good work. Thanks! I am a finger style guitarist. I add bass lines and pick more than three or four strings at one time and place of strumming because sometimes too much strumming gets boring after a while. This is why I chose to be a finger style guitarist. That’s why it breaks the monotony of all of the strumming, although I do strum, but not quite as often as most guitar players do if you watch Chad Atkins, he hits a baseline and then hits three or four strings at the same time. This is what he does in the place of struming. I love being a solo instrumental guitarist. It’s not so boring. I’ve been playing like this since 1974. You’re are a good teacher better than most on KZfaq. Thanks for your videos I really like them have a beautiful day.😁👍🏼❤️🎸😎

Something that's often overlooked in strumming is *_stopping_* the notes. It can be as important as starting them. To stop the notes in a barre chord just lift your fingers a bit. You can hit them while they're muted to give a funky sort of "groove" too. If you're playing chords with open strings in it you need to lay one of your hands down on the strings lightly to stop the notes. You'll see/hear this if you watch a professional closely doing a song with a funky feel.

Thanks so much for all your awesome videos and lessons. My strumming has gotten more regular and better over the last year thanks to you! I am wondering how to move to the next step? I have trouble finding the right feel for some folks songs especially. I wonder if you'd ever do some Dar Williams songs? She has lot's of great songs with relatively easy chord progressions but although I can strum along and it's close, it never feels quite right. "Iowa" or "The Blessings" or almost anything of hers might be a good study :)

Thank you so much just for existing! You are so nice and so helpful! What you miss -in my opinion- in this topic is that as a beginner, strumming not only is hard because of the rythm or so: it is hard because you can not manage to hit all the strings you should with the correct „power“. (Hard to explain as I am GER). Maybe that is something you got to know when playing left-handed: strumming with the right amount of power in the correct angle and place (not too near the strings but not too far away) is VERY hard if you are not experienced. Every time I watch Noel Gallagher strumming I am astounded how on point it is. I began learning a year ago already 40 years of age, and I am not sure if I ever get consistent in my strumming. Sometimes it sounds like punishing the Guitar, sometimes like as if fainting - you Guitarists nail the G Spot every time (because of ages of training I guess). Thanks anyway!! 🙏

Thank you Justin, Great reminder lesson to go back and watch all your strumming lessons. I'm one that for noise level reasons, has for years mainly played with my fingers. Recently started using a pick and even though I've always tried to keep my hand moving, it is a bit different using a pick. I just need to remember your key statement, always start slow, then consistency and speed will come :-)

I've been learning to play on and off for years now (ADD can make sticking with one thing rough) and normally focus on learning the chords, and it's a bit silly but for the first time a few days ago I decided to just focus on strumming and sticking to a beat and I realized??? wow this is the fun part? Whoda thunk it. I also got anxiety around being loud and when I realized I can do what you did and just keep my fingers over the strings it was like an epiphany. so uh, yeah thanks for the vid man! Absolute perfect timing for me (and we all know everything is about me)! Appreciate it!

From a fellow ADD, get dvd guitar course. Almost any one will do as to your level, and follow DVD after DVD, in sequence, follow the lessons in sequence, 1, 2, 3, relax and let the instructor move you along from exercise to exercise. Before you know it , you will have completed the course without rushing. That's my suggestion. Good luck.
