On this one the mode switch and loading belt is serviced. This JVC is a PITA to tear down to access bottom of chassis. Funai starting to look pretty good!

Thanks, this model was close enough to a HR-VP674U I picked up for $15 to allow me to clean the mode switch and check the belts. Those two screws under the loading mechanism were throwing me for a loop. It’s working just fine now - knock on wood - minus the front panel ribbon cable that I damaged when reassembling it. I have the remote, so it’s not a huge deal. Also, my mode switch had alignment arrows on the black and white parts, making it pretty simple.

My experience with JVC VCRs has been that they work great when they're new, and had very good picture quality. But they seemed to wear out quickly and start having tracking problems, first with tapes made on other machines, then eventually on their own tapes! My first "hi-fi" VCR was a JVC, back in 1993. The salesman (remember going to stores and dealing with them?) was showing me "Top Gun" and extolling the picture quality. But I wanted the machine as a hi-fi *AUDIO* recorder and kept asking him questions about that function. Bought it, worked great, I came to appreciate the PQ, and at about 3 years it started getting tetchy about tracking, and at 5 years it totally failed. ...... After that I got a Mitsubishi VCR - and man, that thing was.... is (still have it) built like a tank. Picked up several more late-model HS-U44x and HS-U74x (the S-VHS variant) Mitsus over the years, most of them like new. People bought one last VCR in the early 2000s but ended up not using them much. I still use a Mitsu as an *audio* time-shifting recorder. Got a coupla low-mileage JVCs in the closet. Should pull 'em out and use 'em up. They prolly won't last long, being just about the models produced.

I have learned about sevral formally unknown to me formats on this channel. s-vhs, laserdisc, dat and all those 8mm cassettes. Never had any of those in childhood home or otherwise. we had regular VHS of course and cable-tv, c-tape and vinyl record player. born in the 80's

And this crappy mech. was used in ALL JVC vcr of the era - aka the very end of vcr. From the lowest end (mono/playback only/no tuner etc) to the top of the line ones too. Speaking about cost-cutting measure...

To be honest this design is easier for me to work on than those with the mechanism on the left and a bunch of stacked PCB's on the right. Yes the head ribbon is too short and is a bitch to push back in.

Nice video as usual. These decks are a bit of a pain to work with and on top of that they have the habit of internally destroying the mode switch by breaking the comb contacts attachment to the plastic gear. Once they work, the image is fairly good.

Regarding preserving old tech knowledge. Do remember that NTSC meant "not the same color". Referred as to that the color of an analog TV set was sometimes wrong in phase, I.E. skin color could look green. Also if you stumble upon an old audio recording with hum, its 60/120hz in North America, 50/100hz in most of europe. When stumble into North America and especially Canada, they have a french dish called Poutine, they were a "tuk" (which I still have here in Norway wearing) and they have a British sense of humour that we europeans can identify to.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
No no no you got it all wrong. Never twice same color. That problem BTW was solved by a feature called VIR. Vertical interval reference. TVs that had that were dead on for chroma, black level and phase. My parents set had it and it was beautiful. Has a light that came on when broadcast has it. Most of the large stations did. You could turn it off if you wanted but when on it worked great.

@@12voltvids Thanks for the info Dave, did not know that. Regarding analog video, I do hate the croma "dot crawl" you get when our national TV provider here save old recordings. They transfer analog video with just a composite cable, not with s-video or other component means. There are analog to digital video converters with an inbuilt comb filter, but apparently that knowledge is dead by now.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
@@thomasraden the only way to avoid for crawl on analog video is if it was shot edited and kept on a component system such as BETACAM hi8 or svhs in every step. If it ever went to a non component system such as 1", quad, 3/4" or went through any legacy tbc or switcher the dot crawl has been introduced.

Those pieces of crap (at least the DigiPure equipped models) sell for big bucks now. Overall it is a reliable chassis unlike the Dynamic Drum units that have that gear that always breaks. 20 years later my cheapened for 2000 HR-S7800U is still kicking along with no problems what so ever. I'm kinda pissed that my HR-S7500U just decided to *pop* and die when I plugged it in one day. The drum gear didn't even break yet.

On my HR-S3500U both roller arm assemblies (P2 and P3) seem loose to me. Should they be tight and not be able to wiggle them? I think it was one of your past videos where you mentioned that and I can not find that video.

What's the most easily serviced VCR mechanism? Some of the Sony ones weren't too bad as the chassis just pulls out after 4 screws, and the connectors are all plugs on the bottom that don't need to be handled separately. Too bad about that blue gear issue though...

@12voltvids
@12voltvids Жыл бұрын
first if it's a Panasonic plasma or any plasma for that matter pull the back off it and make sure that all the screws are tight. If they are turn it on and watch for the blink code when it turns off the power light will flash and it'll flash a code like maybe five blinks and then a pause and then five blinks and a pause or nine blinks and a pause count the number of flashes because that will give you a hint as to where the problem is and you can Google the number of flashes for the model and it will tell you where to look whether it's a fan that's not working or a voltage that's missing or overload it'll at least tell you what section to look in
