I feel like “a slave who just wanted to abolish slavery” is a bit underselling him. He murdered basically everyone who stood in the way of Azir claiming the throne, including azirs own family and a newborn baby. Then, when as Azirs last act as human, slavery was in fact abolished and Xerath got what he wanted, he decided that he was too far into his schemes to back out and doomed the entire empire anyway, leading to the deaths of thousands.

I mean he did more than just that, but it's clear that riot doesn't support people who stand up to oppression and tyranny and always treats them as bad guys, unless it's against another country. Sylas is prime example, he's treated as the bad guy even so he's in the right. Irelia is treated as a hero even so she killed and did way worse things than sylas ever did. They really don't like internal rebellion lol.

In Arcane, Silco and Jinx were the antagonists but were clearly meant to be portrayed in a sympathetic light. By the end of it, Silcos plan almost entirely works out and the fact that it doesn’t is the biggest tragedy of the entire show. You want him to get what he wants because it’s the best thing for just about everyone involved, and it’s a generally noble quality in him that leads to it failing. Also I think it’s pretty heavily implied that the discrimination against mages in demacia is a result of conscious effort by a third party (probably Leblanc). It’s not like it isn’t their fault by any means, but when events are expressly engineered by design to achieve and maximize that reaction, it’s a little closer to excusable.
