'Kaahe sakhi', 'Eri aali piya bina', Yaman, Bhimsen Joshi, 1960s

Another rendition of Yaman Kalyan by Bhimsen Joshi, most likely from the 1960s. He renders 'Kaahe sakhi kaise ke kariye' in Vilambit Ektaal, followed by 'Eri aali piya bina' in Drut Teentaal (whose speed becomes somewhat crazy towards the end, which, it seems was common back in the 60s and 70s for him!) The accompanists names are unknown, which is unfortunate. The vocal support artist is really skilled and replicates quite a few of Joshi's powerful taans exactly!
Personally, I feel that several of Joshi's vilambit khayal expansions are typical Kirana expansions and therefore, somewhat predictable, but somehow, in his Yaman Kalyans, he is always a little freer and more experimental. This particular rendition is, even by his standards of Yaman Kalyan, beautiful in an unusual way.

That's his classic Yaman big taan, he performed this type of taan maybe 2 to 4 times during his Chhota khayal performances. Because it's very difficult to execute.

Indeed. Superhuman breath control the man had! The ending of the taan (GॱGॱGॱ RॱRॱRॱ NNN DDD mmm GGG RRR) is something he has also used in his taan in the Kannada song 'Guruvina gulama naguva tanaka' for _Sandhya Raga_ (1966)

Yaman Kalyan is interesting now. At 1:00:00 to 1:00:20, out of this universe and out of any dimensions I can imagine. I would rate this as one of the best and finest khayal gayakis of Bharat Ratna Pt. Bhimsen Joshi available on KZfaq. Manjusha Bambhore : I am happy to see a human being who also gets that this performance is so exceptional that no response can sum up what it makes one feel. The Khayaal gayaki on the Ektaal is sublime, but the Drut Teental ? No words created by humans can capture the sublime excellence - It is one of the finest 8 minutes of music in human history.

He is much more melodious & the depth in his singing that just holds you....later towards the end he seem to hv become less incline for public programs...he was a great singer with such variations & ease...just loved this album

I wish my Baba was with me when I do that because he was a very dedicated fan of Panditji’s. I have had the pleasure of meeting Panditji and listening to him live in Hubli. FA Sir many thanks for uploading this unmatchable YK. This can’t be bettered. Also fine audio quality. Heard in my modest Dali Oberon 7 driven by MarAntz sr 5410 in direct mode thru AirPlay and it was like cd. Seldom one comes across such clean upload of old maestros in you tube. Thanks 🙏

Farhan Amin sir we badly need some VK uploads with good audio. Most of uploads so far have poor quality and fails to project his genius. Pl see if u can help. His recitals in u tube need remastering, not impossible these days. RS and NB r lucky in this respect

It is notable, that pt ji has maintained the laya while shifting from bada khyal to chhota khyal. 2 beats of vilambit ektaal after the badhat equals 16 beats of drut tritaal.

Perhaps during 50s - 60s he was more into experimenting with his learning and moulding it accordingly but subsequently adhered to the gharana teachings. I maybe totally wrong. Just an opinion. What's your take?

Yes, perhaps you are right. Our observations are, of course, limited to what has been made available on KZfaq and other such fora. What % of his total repertoire these constitute, idrk. ;) This reminds me of a quote, apparently, by the man himself, which you may have also read, where he says that he feels that his best music perhaps has gone unrecorded!

Best assessment of Pt. Bhimsen Joshi's music and it's evolution has been narrated by Mohan Nadkarni in his book 'Bhimsen Joshi, the man and his music'. A must read book IMO.

He has sung this towards the end of this recording. Several other versions are also available. The 19-minute 1967 commercial release of his Yaman is there on KZfaq. There are at least two other, later versions of the same also, including a 13-minute version uploaded by thuryina.

I beg to differ. He has deployed the Shuddha Madhyam on occasion and hence, it is indeed YK.

@@raghvendraupadhye8580 I think you may well be right. However, masters such as BSJ often take certain liberties. For instance, in one of his early commercial releases, he sings Darbari in the vilambit and Suha in the drut. I also suspect that the bandish in the Bageshree anga Nayaki Kanada that he sings is essentially his idea of recasting the Shankara bandish 'Kal na pare maiko' in a different raga. (I may be mistaken though) He has also likely recast the Guni Gandharva composition (Raga Todi) 'Eri mai aaj shubha mangal gao' in Raga Hindolita (a creation of his, I suppose).

@@FarhanAmin1994 and Raghavendra Upadhye: the suddha ma can be heard clearly at 8:57 , 10:09, 12:02, 12:35, 20:01, and then more frequently later. This is undoubtedly Yaman Kalyan, in my humble opinion

@@FarhanAmin1994 yeh FAji you are absolutely right,as being a kirana gharana singer I agree with you.he never sung same,I mean everywhere he sang with different complexion.in case of poorya Kalyan also d same.one has to observe very keenly.
