Kabuki Strength released their Iron Plates and I was PUMPED! Now that I've got them in...well...they're okay.
Kabuki Strength and Chris Duffin are making some of the best gym equipment in the world. After using and reviewing the Kabuki Trap Bar, Duffalo Bar, New Gen Power Bar, Transformer Bar, and other of their products, I have high expectations.
The Kabuki Iron Plates aren't necessarily bad, but, they're not amazing either. Let's discuss...

They looked pretty messy. If they are uneven then deads will be off. If the sleeve hole is not smooth then it will eat up bar sleeves.... Spend a bit of money on bars and would rather them not be chewed up.

I have mostly cheap Chinese plates and can see the value of nicer plates for sure. Mine are inconsistent as hell, they rattle around on the bars and make the bars want to roll around randomly. Even when I don't strictly need collars I often use them in an attempt to lock the plates down so they don't make things more difficult than they need to be. And don't come at me with some sass about lifting should be hard! Moving weight should be a challenge, fighting the bar when you want to do consecutive consistent reps is a pain and doesn't pay off in gains.

Solid review Coop. I went with the Rogue Deep Dish myself (4 sets of 45s and a set of 25s). However, I do think that there is a lot to like here. Accuracy is great. And as much as I love Rogue, they do not have a made in the USA cast iron plate below 25 lbs. Yesterday I received two sets of 10s and a set of 5s from Specialty Bar and Weight. They are great, and I'm happy to have full set of Made in the USA Iron plates. Lastly, I think the Strength Co. Iron plates look good. I may order some of those as well. However, when it comes to 45s, the Rogue Deep Dish is the King of the Hill.

I ended up splurging on the American Barbell rubber coated plates because they were the only thing in stock at the time. I am so glad I did, they are total luxury. All plates were within 0.2 pounds and they are so easy to carry because of the built in handles and the steel centers are very nice. Highly recommended if you want to buy high end plates.

Imported products seem to be having more problems because they're trying to keep up with demand. For instance, we've seen some people get Rogue Dumbbells (which are imported) that have different lettering and different knurling. As far as MIA stuff, there have been a few more QC issues than normal that we've noticed, but nothing dramatic.

Unless you have fully milled plates, calibrated steel, Rubberized/Vulcanized Rubber plates, All Iron plates look and function the same IMO. Cast Iron will always have pitting and rough finish unless milled for smoothness. I say get any plate for now and maybe wait out for a better version down the road when they get this QC on point if you really want Kabuki brand.

@@ChrisCoyotee Thirty dollar difference between generic Chinesium quality iron plates with a stated +3%/- 3% (2.7 lb range 45 lb plate) weight tolerance and rough finish cast bore vs. Rogue iron plates with a machined periphery, back and bore with a +2%/-0% (0.9 lb range 45 lb plate) weight tolerance...the Kabuki plates don't even have a proper chamfered bore...just look at the difference in bore finish between the Kabuki at 5:27 vs the Rogue at 5:32. Kabuki is using an unnamed "small foundry" in 'soy latte sipping', smash and burn, America hating Portland, and since the plates are a new offering, demand may quickly outstrip their ability to produce and deliver on time leaving you waiting longer than you would have for the Rogue. I'd be calling and cancelling with Kabuki and seeing I you can get back on Rogue's list.

Not many people understand casting processes. I would be more concerned about porosity (I.e. voids in the casting) than whether the back of the plate has been machined, or not. After that, I want to see the collars properly machined, the plates properly balanced coming out of the molds, and the plate edges cleaned up in order to avoid cuts. Paint is paint. It’s going to wear off.

I'm surprised that after the casting most companies don't have some general code/program setup so they can drop the plates right in and have a cnc clean them up quick but i guess that just adds to the cost...
@mikeb9396
@mikeb9396 3 жыл бұрын
@@stevenrobare6668 Once the plates come out of the foundry, they are run over a shaker table that breaks the casting sand up separating the cast iron from the sand so that the sand can be recycled. More than likely, the casting will have the sprue ground off right afterward, and possibly have the edges broken in order to cut down on the sharp edges. CNC equipment is expensive to purchase and operate. Fixtures are required, are expensive and not universal. More than likely, the plates are sent either to another supplier who has CNC capability, or sent to Kabuki assuming that they have the equipment. The sand texture on the back of the plate is cosmetic, and provides a bit of gripping surface due to the slightly rough texture. Hopefully, Kabuki is concentrating on weight variance and milling the areas where milling is needed; in the hub, and on the edges.

Deep dish for life. Rogues look the best but their 25s aren't deep dish style and that pisses me off.

@@HauptmannGallenstein I don't have to watch it again, I understand why they originally were manufactured that way because they didn't have to make the 25s deep dish but if you've ever held those with one hand they're a pain in the ass to grip and one of the main reason people like deep dish is their ease of handling. Us a complete set should look similar anyways. It's called inovation and what's why the deep dish 25s are better.

@@OfficialMarkZuckerberg OK that's actually a really good argument and I'll have to agree here. Sometimes historically acurrate isn't always the best.

Yeah shit sucks I was hoping they would at least make them deep dish just for the looks

@@pacback1143 I'm torn because I want a matching deep dish set like the Kabuki everyone is complaining about shipping and it would litterally go coast to coast plus the rogue is just better being a milled finish but they don't have the deep 25s.

Coop. How do you heat your gyms? For those of you out there... Recently bought a house. Cannot wait to build the gym. I have a small detached garage that is in good shape. I live in Michigan, how do I heat this thing??

Mini-split or propane top heater.

Don't forget insulation as well. I insulated the walls and ceiling and put osb on the walls. I have a cheap craftsman forced air propane heater that works well. I live about 15 minute from Lake Erie so it gets cold from time to time.

@@williammelms5139 I have a ridge vent. It's only a 1 car detached garage. I run it long enough to warm it up. And that's it. I have a CO detector in case. But it's not sealed tight enough to hold fumes in.

@@bmstylee Good to know. Mine is a 1 car too. They've dry walled the whole thing at some point so hopefully it'll hold some heat. Thanks.
