Eh, the trickery with the pH thing is that ... we're all the same pH for the most part. So yeah it changes color but it's the same color because pH doesn't vary that wildly on people's mouths. WE AREN'T POOL WATER!

Once I hit 30, I was overcome with this huge wash of relief. No longer did I have to try so hard to be in my 20s and meet all the expectations of youth. I was old and it was GLORIOUS. I know 34 (my present age) isn't old, obviously, but it sure is lovely.

I’m a gen x-er and am now old enough to see things come around more than once and one thing that never changes is each new generation thinking they created this stuff and that it never existed before. One of the benefits of getting older is realizing you’re just the latest link in a long chain.

I'm at least 25 years older than you I can remember when highlighter and contour were trends. My makeup bag had foundation, concealer, piowder, blush, a quad eye shadow, an eye liner, mascara and brow pencil. No wonder travel was so much easier. Bronzers weren't separate but you'd choose a bronze blush... no color correctors, no different brow products. I enjoy the variety and the improved quality and options but at the same time, it can be a bit much.

I genuinely feel like there is a big divide between older gen z and younger gen z. All the trends from beauty youtube that are coming back, I remember watching the first time around. I started watching youtube in 6th grade and I’m 21 now. There are people in gen z that are out of college and full adults. The cusp and older gen z group have been online for 10 + years. I don’t think a lot of people who are in older generations realise this but who you’re talking about is the end of gen z and the beginning of gen alpha. Kids are online so young and can be marketed to so young and the oldest gen alpha kid is 13 now.

(22 gen z black girl + venting) the dark (or black) lip liner is really a staple for a lot of brown and black ppl in the beauty space (me included), and i already heard some (generally white) ppl winning about how "off" this is to them.. everything is not for everybody, that fine, but its not a trend, and i feel myself being really annoyed when the white girlies start crying about how scary dark lip liner are, that sound ridiculous and now i am upset :(( Anyways nice video Kackie, THANK U

This is a super good point! I mean last year I think one of the trends we were leaving behind was "clean girl" looks because it was something co-opted from black people's ways of wearing their hair ET CETERA there's a lot there but yeah. I was trepidatious choosing photo examples because I was like okay how many of these are racially and culturally coded but also it's not entirely avoidable 🥵

I'm 46. Thirty two years ago when I started wearing makeup there wasn't primer, highlighter or contour. Not that I remember anyway! There was such a big divide between drugstore makeup or "department" store makeup. If you bought only drugstore makeup there was no reason for you to know how much luxury makeu would cost - you literally weren't coming across that, so you would be surprised. I was a department store consumer so I wasn't surprised by the cost. Lancome was expensive back in the day, and it's expensive now. Same with Esteee Lauder and Prescriptives at the time. There is so much information and knowledge available about everything now, makeup is no exception. Tati was there at the beginning when people started to discover all kinds of makeup spaces. it wasn't true back in the day, the spaces did not cross! The drugstore counter wasn't next the department store counter. Online though? There are no physical barriers like that

Hahaha, every time you emphasize the word youths here, I am reminded of My Cousin Vinnie. 😂 GenXer here who started watching (what I thought was pretty silly beauty/fashion content on) KZfaq by millennials back in 2008. Over the years I’ve narrowed down my subscriptions to “kindred spirits” who span various generations. In many ways I relate to millennials more than to creators my own age, who seem very socially/environmentally “right” leaning…and generally very “shop my links” obsessed.

I'm going to be 50 on Thursday and I'm still changing things. I was into bright colors on the eyes the more vibrant the better, full makeup on, now I'm starting to get more into light makeup and more soft eyes. I just received a couple palettes from cosmic brushes and I'm sorely disappointed. They're just not what I want but I'm used to buying indie. my style is changing I'm shopping at different stores I bought the xenon palette and I like it's so nice. I cannot believe I'm going to be 50 in 2 days it's crazy to me.

This. Kackie and Hannah are the same person in different fonts and I love that I can get similar content and perspectives and introspection whether I'm in the mood for high energy chaos or calmer discussions. And throwing Amanda Z into the mix, she's like the center of that continuum; with hautmesstom, they're at the halfway point between Amanda and Kackie. And State of Kait for me resides in the spot between Hannah and Amanda. And to know that all of them are friends? Proves that I've found my people and the right side of the Internet

Such good commentary! Honestly short form TikTok beauty videos leave much to be desired. I always walk away with questions and there just isn’t enough time to address them. Long form content is way more educational and satisfying, personally. I feel like Tiktokers (am I aging myself by calling them that? 😂) are selling products more than they’re trying to inform viewers. KZfaq is the exact opposite for me. As always, I hope you’re doing well!

I'm gen z (on the older end) and my early gen x mom beat into me not to over-pluck my eyebrows, but she also had some deeply wack ideas about unibrows and mustaches and bodies in general. I think with the cycling and recycling of various trends and attitudes, the best case scenario is that as the trend repeats burn out iteratively, so too do whatever wild constructs they reflect until the trend loses its power, the idea dies out, and the fashion industry loses another physical AND psychological avenue to prey upon people's wallets.

I am 46 and wore actual 90ties make-up as a teenager and I feel the trending version of it is not what we did back then. We had no bronzer or highlighter, not everyone plucked their eyebrows and there were more lipstick trends than the very much darker outline. I loved smeared kajal, a softly sculped face (Supermodels!) and did not pluck my brows (team Cindy). As I worked as a model back then so much more interesting make-up was done on me. So I have to state that the nowday version is like a clichee yet this is good! We evolve and I consider the interpretation somehow cringe and sometimes interesting. On a personal level I do not use tiktok and do my make-up as I feel on a daily basis. Very beautifying yet natural for work or more colourful (blue smokey eye, 90ties kajal or a bold red lip) for my private activities. I am too old to care for trends. And not every trend would work for me (the most important lesson!).

Even though I religiously watch your videos, I’m a mainly drugstore/midrange makeup consumer (it’s what I can afford) but I agree with the uninspired dupe era we are stuck in. I wish drugstore brands would just do their thing. It does feel like you are buying a knock off when buying dupes. The other thing….i met a girl recently who claimed she’s super into makeup and I was like omg finally someone! And she proceeded to tell me she only buys stuff from morphe, and I hate to admit I felt like a judgmental snob…coming from a drugstore girl 🙄

I wouldn’t even know what generation I am - but I am a young 52! I never wore makeup until I was about 36 - it just wasn’t something I thought I needed. It is only recently that I’ve become interested because of ageing and trying to maintain some degree of healthy looking skin. I have a 17 year old daughter who is beyond gorgeous and has very much been into a skin care routine for 3 years plus! She’s taught me - but I must admit that it is very time consuming and costly…but I really do enjoy the art and the self care involved - I’ve never cared for myself as I’ve always spent my time caring for others but I do enjoy sitting down and learning how makeup can make me look more radiant - it’s a great confidence booster for sure!!

I'm so glad that my eyebrows grew back! I can't imagine such a cruel fate as making one mistake and losing my eyebrows!

Lol man i wish i have someone like you to hang around with. I've had burned my husband's ear off with this exact/similar mullings on this very aubject. My other friends dont carr about makeup, so even if the subject is not the beauty industry but the context is, I've lost them at the outset. My good friend who's into beauty and this kind of conversation is a bit younger and haven't quite arrived to this point yet.

What’s strange is I used to pluck my brows both near the bridge of the nose and out at the tails. Now the inner ones still live but the outer ones died. Which is the opposite of what I’d prefer! Why…WHY?!?!

I frequent a makeup Reddit and I’m on a quest to warn the youngs to shave, not pluck their eyebrows. Mine came back, many didn’t.

Great point about Tati's WTF vids in today's world....now luxury is "commonplace" for lack of a better word because of the Influencer explosion and IG and TikTok flexing..

Well, kiddo, if you are mother, this 57 year old must be a crone. I was taught that make up was not supposed to be noticeable. If anyone complimented my makeup it meant I was wearing too much, or colors that were too bright. This makes it very hard to experiment with a smokey eye or a bold lip, especially at my advanced age. It's been a learning curve. I do DEEPLY appreciate all the new info about skin care, and all the lovely choices available now, though. And I am NEVER giving up my Gucci lipsticks.

Yes!! I just turned 64 this past September. I was taught the same thing...if someone can tell I have makeup on, then I am wearing too much. My focus at my really crone-y age is on skin care. So glad there are some great quality, yet semi-affordable choices out there. I'm also pleased that there are some great YT dermatologists who can point me in the right direction as to what my skin type is and what it needs. Gucci lipsticks....going to have to check those out!!!

HAHA im one of those gen z followers! (though i will say, DEFINITELY not one who uses tiktok lol) & for whatever its worth, watching your channel has actually influenced me to stop tweezing my brows this year--i did it for awhile just because my brows are SO thick it gives me more lid space (& also once someone told me i looked like saavik from star trek and i took that as a HUGE compliment), but maintaining it was literally SUCH a pain

Dewy skin is at both ends. Hailey Bieber and Rhodes vs Bobbi Brown and Jones Road. And now people who buy Jones Road are TikTok viewers like me, though I won’t buy either. What I most notice is how the trends are like tornadoes on TikTok. If, one day you see a couple of people talking about those tanks or jeans or concealer, the next day it has gone Malthusean and you realize it was in no way organic. And it’s much worse now that there is a “TikTok shop.” Btw, I did not realize the dark lip liner filled in with gloss was 90s. What *I*remember was overlining in dark liner and filling in with a slightly lighter shade, though that was more 80s. I think the newer iteration is less hideous, but is it worse than using liner as lipstick or using foundation on your lips?

75 yrs old - glad i never over-plucked my brows. Thicker brows & straight white teeth help oldies look good. Also - I must say, people compliment me WHEN I bother to put on some eye make-up

When I was in college a girl was telling us she needed to get her eyebrows waxed and I said "you don't have any to start with." I was savage back then., but it was more of concern. The tadpole look was popular.
