Now Arsenal’s defence and midfield is very versatile. Now we have a holding midfielder who can play box to box. A DM who can play overhead passes. A LB who can play that Xhaka role. A tall 8 who can play false 9 and a 9. A deep lying playmaker. We only have 2 CBs and other backup CBs are also able to play fullbacks. We also have a final third passer. A 10 who can also operate on LW.

To all RVP fans with rose-nostalgia-tinted glasses, here's some actual stats: 1st season at Arsenal in the Premier League: 5 goals / 1 assist. 2nd season at Arsenal in the Premier League: 5 goals / 1 assist. 3rd season at Arsenal in the Premier League: 11 goals / 5 assists. 4th season at Arsenal in the Premier League: 7 goals / 3 assists. 5th season at Arsenal in the Premier League: 11 goals / 10 assits. 6th season at Arsenal in the Premier League: 9 goals / 7 assists. 7th season at Arsenal, and this is the season where he finally looked like a striker everyone remembers him by, 18 goals / 7 assists. He was 27 at the time and in his prime. It took him 7 bloody years to fulfill his true potential, and for some reason Havertz was slagged off after 7 games. And before anyone goes: "But he was injured hurr durr..." Well, if Haaland was injured for half a season every year, he wouldnt be scoring nearly as much. Now, would he? Neither would Ronaldo, or Messi for that matter. Availability IS ability. Long story short, Havertz is on course to have a better first season than any of the RVP's first 3 (THREE) seasons at Arsenal. And he's not even playing as a striker. And no, Im not saying he's better than RVP. But people who only remember the good times need some perspective.

What use is an amazing player if he can't string 3 matches in a row without getting injured for few weeks, or months in RVPS case? RVP was amazing when he was fit. Too bad it was very, very rare. And of course, as soon as he was finally fit after a decade or so, he buggered off for greener pastures.

I think the differentiation of position over roles is important. Wenger was the absolute worst at subjugating roles over position. Namely, playing people out of position despite how poorly equipped they were to play it. Arteta breakdowns position based on what attributes and what skills he wants expressed from that position. The attitude is completely different and it's very La Masia Total Football philosophically. In fact I think Johan Cruyf would look on this Arsenal side and think yes this is FOOTBALL ❤😂

Awesome analysis mate, absolutely love your work. Couldn’t agree more with everything you said. One interesting thing about Kai that I think is often overlooked, is the fact that he has grown 2 inches since he arrived in England. Looking at Kai at Leverkusen and even highlights from early Chelsea, he had a silliness and smoothness on the ball which has become more and more clunky. Obviously confidence plays a big role in this, but I can only imagine that going through a growth spurt (especially when already quite tall), obviously would impact your balance etc. and I think may go a long way to explaining his below par ball striking and also weight of pass, two aspects of his game that were absolutely outstanding at Leverkusen. This would then naturally make you more conservative on the ball, as you don’t have full confidence in your movements etc. The good news for us Arsenal fans is that in recent weeks, his ball striking, whether it be weight of pass or finishing seems to be steadily improving, and I think a level of creativity and ambition on the ball will naturally follow. All reports out of Germany were that this guy was a ridiculous talent. Creative, ruthless, elegant, and I truly believe he can get back there once he fully grows into his body, as well as restoring that confidence that was destroyed at Chelsea. Talent doesn’t leave you. The good news is, I think this has only been the beginning, and the real Kai will come through, and we will get to witness it. Thanks again for all your hard work mate, your content is genuinely awesome.

From my point of view (very similar). The thing why he has a place in the lineup is not that he is the best player, but that he is the best teammate. He allows others to make better rotations because he doesn't want the ball all the time. He looks for space to create space for others. For example, when Jesus is in the false 9 gap and calls for the ball, Saka will not go there and stay in his gap on the wing instead. Kai's approach is different, he pulls the center back away from that gap and leaves space in the middle for Saka, Martinelli... So they rotate more and get into better positions. He can do the same from 8 and he does. But then it is necessary that 9 sometimes leaves that place free for others and goes elsewhere.
@aminerkin9844
@aminerkin9844 2 ай бұрын
I think arteta saw at the later stages of last season that teams played park the bus and double marked saka and martinelli, hence, he realized this opens space for run from deep and/or crosses from saka and martinelli as opposed to always hoping to get shooting opportunity. He dropped odegaard deeper, because odeggard is not really a runner, and dropped xhaka who himself was playing more of an attacking CM by later stage. instead brought in rice who plays slightly deeper as an 8. though partey injury changed things. In possession he went from 232(odegaard and xhaka)3 to 222(rice and odegaard)4.

To add to your points, I think a constantly overlooked partnership in the prem is Negredo/Aguero at times Jovetic too. That link up was insane. But if you go further back I think of Dzeko and Grafite at Werder Bremen. Devastating. Funny enough. I'd be happy but admittedly I am indifferent to having an Osimhen, Toney etc etc. I'm no expert but I think Lautaro Martinez or Rafa Leao (converted to our no.9) would be the level raisers in our team. You give them space and time which Havertz can provide and our attack would be devastating. Furthermore, with any of those two, our attack will have dynamism and an insane level of unpredictability. It may be a wild take. But I'll willingly die on this sword! That being said, what do I know. I'm just a gunner with a dream 🤣🤣🤣

There's always 2-3 options in a given situation, and you need to make the correct coordinated decision with your teammates, and that doesn't always mean "but I'm the CF I can't move from this spot." Havertz plays that role well. He sees the spaces that need to be filled, he occupies defenders allowing for off ball runs...He's an enabler. If your team is playing bunch ball, he's the solution.

Great analysis. I think we could compare in a future Haverz to kind of Giroud role in Arsenal and France national team, where he was more a 9 helping to play better others around him, great on holding up ball, on set pieces, high passes, hold up play. Remember Giroud was never a clinical enough we wanted, but his role let him always start in national team. Was Haverz expencive? Yeah, for sure.

I think his strongest suits as a _midfielder_ is that he is never a liability. With the high press and very high line Arsenal wants to play with, making few mistakes and always being positioned correctly is of utmost importance when you are playing to win the league. His good passing and physicality adds to Arsenal some of what we lost with Xhaka, and he is deceptively great at taking up awkward spaces for the opposition.

Havertz best performances have been at CF. Still think we need a clinical foward. The games we’ve lost this season vs villa, Newcastle and West Ham. If we had a clinical striker we would of won those games. When the team is not performing a good striker gets you out of it. Henry, wrighty and even rvp used to do it all the time.

I don't disagree that Havertz isn't a goal scorer in the way Haaland and Salah are, but am not sure that no one in our squad "sniffs out" goals. Saka has scored against Bournemouth away, Fulham away, PSV at home, Lens at home, Liverpool at home, all rebound goals just off the top of my head this season. And if Saka becomes that goal scorer (and only Messi was an objectively better goal scoring winger at Sakas age) then could Havertz then play as a false nine a la Firmino. We could get a serious winger or midfielder if we weren't sinking the summer budget on a striker.

I love your perspective, goes beyond football. Many people seem to be blind to the mental side of things and data which you can see makes a difference. In short, Havertz has always been an intelligent baller. Just needs more Goal involvements

When he was at Leverkusen, I really liked his game. There is a similar style of Ozil's game and really hope he can replace Ozil who was having problems with Arsenal at the time. Suddenly he signed a contract with Chelsea. I am very dissapointed. But now not anymore, he is an Arsenal player! I was very happy when he joined Arsenal. Arteta knows his qualities, abilities and how to use it😊

I understand the role vs position aspect but we still don’t have an 8 or long term 9 so we’re still kind of stuck the same position as last summer. Glad he’s found some form but I think it’s been overstated how good he’s been, wish we hadn’t signed him tbh. Great content as always .

A few months ago to many arsenal fans wanted havertz out and even saying arteta had not a clue,rome wasn't built in a day ,we all need to sit back and watch our team and be proud of the great football we are playing, well done to the manager and his coaches, well done to the squad and specially to the owners and board.

Yes, hand-up, I panned Havertz from the start. I remember his key contribution against Manure was a crossfield pass straight to Bruno Fernandes that started a counterattack that resulted in a goal. Think he also blocked an Arsenal shot in that game. I am converted. He’s brilliant for us Now. I suppose I wish Arteta had eased him into games, bringing him on once we were two goal up, rather than picking him as a starter week in, week out. But perhaps if Arteta had done that, we’d still be waiting for the Havertz we see now. Either way, it’s a shame that our poor form in the first half of the season might cost us dear at the end. But it’s still been great football to watch (like last year). Fingers crossed we get something tangible at the end of it.

He’s like a mobile Giroud with a little less physicality, silkiness and finishing ability. Pretty decent but I think he will forever be very frustrating and divisive, which ever position he plays in. He offers something fairly unique for us with his off the ball movement and hold up play/aerial ability - a good outlet for a long ball

The player you just described is Gabriel Jesus. But without the injuries. Havertz is another version of Jesus. Not very clinical but his movement, work rate and footballing intelligence levels up the other attackers around him. When he arrived he was low in confidence, short a yard and needed to click with his teammates. He’s now confident, fit and over the hump of integrating with the others. If Nketia could be more clinical would have 3 well balanced strikers, we need a poacher with pace we can chuck on in some games to round out our strike force.

There’s only one player I would like at for striker if we truly are in the market, and it’s Watkins. He offers a good hybrid of what makes Havertz and Jesus such important profiles to have in the squad with a higher finishing level. But this is only needed if the team move Eddie on this summer.

I like your take and I'm starting to agree. Firstly, we're starting to learn to trust Arteta's vision with the players he targets and his ability to get the most out of their potential. If Kai continues to show his ability to operate as a CF in a system that continues to churn out 4-5-6 goal games, why not let him stay as our CF? Even if he's not as deadly as other strikers he's contributing to the whole team scoring with his off the ball work. Then rather then splashing $100M+ on a Oshimen, that same money can purchase players like Zubamendi, Onana and even Niko Williams. Allowing us to totally upgrade our squad and have more reliable, younger talent. Then if we do go for a striker, we could target someone like Matheus Tel from Bayern. Aiming for a young but promising potential world beater who now has time to adapt and learn a new system.

I can’t wait till we hit the end of the season to see how far certain players have come so we can then decide who needs to be brought in and who needs to be moved on. Do we risk keeping Partey for another year with his injury record? Do we sell Nketiah and ESR to aid in getting a striker since Havertz and Rice have the no 8 role on lock? So many possibilities at this point and good questions left up in the air.
