Kaido's scale tattoo in the anime was red. His dragon form is blue. Guess this was foreshadowing for the whole magikarp gyrados thing on oda's part :)

The sea part really doesn't apply only to fish though. As Tekking himself said, it's commonly known that Dragons are aquatic, sea serpents in eastern mythologies. They are tied to water, unlike western dragons which are tied to fire. Being a dragon alone applies to the statement of "Land, Sea and Air" Edit - spelling

I think it will be a hybrid of these various theories: The Koi fruit is extremely rare and unique, and it's awakening happens after a great struggle, just like the Koi of legend. The awakening is the transformation into a dragon. Kaido was captured many times and endured thousands tortures, which pushed him towards his DF awakening. The Uo-Uo No Mi is rare and powerful enough (perhaps the most powerful) to be sought after by the Celestial Dragons, which is what was happening at God Valley. Rocks got wind of this and went to steal it for himself. An extension to this is that Kaido is also the sea dragon of Ragnarok - Jormungandr, who will start the 'greatest war' when he leaves the sea and comes into land. This would mean that Big Mom is his sister, Hel, who is Queen of the Land of the Dead (dead=tot in German = Totland). The third sibling of Jormungandr and Hel is Fenrir, a giant fearsome wolf. I think this wolf is Blackbeard, who has a mythical zoan cerberus fruit which allows him to be 3 'persons' at once. Maybe this fruit was at God Valley as well. Fenrir was captured by red-haired Tyr, who gave up his arm to Fenrir help his friends. Perhaps there is a linkage between the Sea King who took his arm and Blackbeard. These 3 siblings are the children of Loki and a giantess, Angbroda, so we should watch out for them also. We should also note that Dory and Broggy said of the spear of Elbaf that "only the great serpent soaked on blood can withstand" it's attacks. Lots to think about

@Yair Evreuklovic Aezenbergwow you’re bringing a lot of Pokémon into this. I don’t remember if we have seen an awakened Zoan df, so we don’t know how it would work. Yes n this case Kaido could’ve eaten the Fish-Fish fruit and then, going with how you awaken a df, he was able to turn into a dragon. The whole thing is just a theory and only time will tell. I personally like the theory and think it could happen but hey that’s just me

Ironically, Kaido's invulnerable feature might actually be a feature of the Koi rather than a dragon. Koi are famous symbols of hardiness and perseverance. On top of the Dragon myth, they're famously long lived and are one of the few species that can *thrive in polluted waters.* ....cough.

I wouldn't say that's a good way to look at it. He's just an evolved form of a Koi so really he has the attributes that he would have as a fish as well as the abilities and form he attained when he became a dragon.

Theory: the carp carp fruit’s power grants you luck/immortality until one can graduate to obtaining the power of the dragon. That’s why such a point was made about him surviving be captured and defeated. The carp in the legend is significant for its ability to preserver what if the fruit just enabled that perseverance?

Kaido's hybrid form will look like the antagonist in that Jackie Chan animated series. Mabe fish fish fruits are super common, but because they are so useless we never hear about their users. Can't swim, can't use it on land. Hybrid form just makes you little slipery and smell like fish. People hate you because they think you might be a fishman. Imagine being an upcoming pirate captain in one of the blues, your crew has started to make some name and you finally manage to find an devil fruit. You think with this power you are ready to go conquer the Grand line. Then it turns out to be fish fish fruit. Not evena shark model. You stop being a pirate and go start a bakery.

If Oda based Kaidos fruit on the Koi legend, it’s entirely possible that due to the nature of how the koi gain the ability to turn into a dragon we can translate that into Kaido himself, since it’s been stated that kaido has been captured and has lost on several occasions, if kaidos dragon mode is his awakened form, what if the sea acknowledge Kaidos determination and perseverance and granted him the ability to Swim as opposed to all the other devil fruit users who are stripped of their strength in the sea, when shanks spoke to buggy about the devil fruits he stated this “I heard they are incarnations of the sea devil. Supposedly, if you eat one, you will gain devil powers... but the sea will hate you and take your ability to swim!” So if we take that literally the sea could in terms not hate Kaido hence not stripping his ability to swim

I like the idea that fish-fish fruits are extremely common, but every time someone turns into fishes for the first time they die cause can't breath without water and loose consciousness when inside any body of water, therefore the only useful fish fruit is the mythical one. And that is why we never saw a fish zoan before.

I feel that if this was the case at least in the OP universe there would be people smart enough to test it out with friends in a pool rather than just jumping in the ocean. People would know about it and it should be written about in the encyclopedia. Sure Oda couldve not told us the reader but meh. I really think there could only be the mythical fish fish fruit. It turns you into a koi. Awakend you bcome a dragon like kaido. Vegepunk just copied the dragon form for his artificial thats why it falled and sucked with Momo

Regarding your theory about weakness to sea/seaprism stones, both Luffy and Kidd was still pretty strong even when they are restrained by seaprism hand-cuffs. So probably not too far fetched about Kaido still being strong underwater.

I used to read tons of Chinese web novels, and "carp leaping over the dragon gate" is one of the most common expressions i saw that is used to describe someone who changed their live 180 degrees in a short time (for example Some weakling becoming god-like figure, or someone poor becoming one of the richest persons etc)

Well, first of all crocodile ate sand sand fruit that makes him basically twice as weak when exposed to water, so it would be fair if the opposite of that fruit is exist. And secondly, this reveal of kaido devil fruit’s name is the answer of “if kaido wanted to die so bad, why coulndt he just drown himself in the water?” Kinda question.

Maybe the reason Momo's fruit failed was because Vegapunk tried to make a dragon fruit, when it's a fish fruit that evolved into a dragon.

OTHER IDEA/THEORY: Luffy is actually the koi fish in this story. you have the plenty of fish that gave up - the pirates that joined kaidou and lost their will; the few that remained - kidd, killer, law,, drake, etc; and then you have the one koi fish that endured and persevered until the end - luffy will climb the major metaphorical waterfall that is kaidou and his strenght and power. and thus you have a nice oda style twist from an original story/myth/legend from our real world (as he does sometimes, like doflaminho taking his name from the protagoist of the spanish novel "dom quixote de la mancha). As of this time the dragon will be beaten by another metaphorical koi fish. "Basically", another incredible euphemism by Oda.

Personally, I don't think fish devil fruits are going to be an exception and be able to swim. I think the whole point of Kaido's fruit is how the base power was probably completely worthless at first (a weak creature, and like all other DFs it can't even swim), but through effort or awakening or some method, it could unlock the hidden potential to become one of the strongest ones.

The legend is that if a Koi fish climbs a waterfall it becomes a dragon, so Kaido dragon form might be that awaken version of his devil fruit

Well the legend is basically the koi struggled for 1000 years and when the koi finished the gods acknowledged his persistence and turned the koi into a great golden dragon I doubt it would happen if the journey was easy

what if kaido's version of the waterfall myth is him managing to swim as a fish even if he did 100% have the devil fruit weakening effect. What if this is an introduction to how a devil fruit is awakened?maybe a devil fruit awakens when it is used to its extreme, in kaido's case was managing to swim since he is a fish, its what fish do, they swim. Besides, it would be logical if the only advantage being a fish had was the ability to breath underwater which would make swimming easier but still just as weakened as with any other devil fruit. Also who did kaido manage to swim?well because hes kaido ofc

It depends on who's soul they were made out of probably. If their original soul had a devil fruit then they would die. It could also be that they would die anyway because they are made with the power of a devil fruit and so already have the essence of a devil fruit in them.

If you think it's that, you didn't think about how Kaido is the strongest on land, *sea,* and sky. This heavily implies Kaido's fruit still allows motor control underwater; at most, submerging will just lock Kaido into one form.

Hmmm, what if there are only fresh water fish fruits? It is said that devil fruit users are hated by the sea, but fresh water fish aren’t in the sea. So they could still work. I know that devil fruit users still weaken in any submerged liquid, but then being hated by the sea and sea prism stone is slightly different from the being submerged in liquid thing. So fresh water fish could still be hated by the sea, because they literally are anyway. And this works because Kaido’s fruit is (most likely) a mythical variant of a carp or koi fish, which the myth is based on, and are both freshwater fish

I honestly was so hyped to find out his devil fruit actually had to do with the koi. I tossed that idea around with my friends for the longest time considering his tats and the waterfalls for Wano relating to the older tale of the koi swimming up to become a dragon. They were like "yeah that's plausible I guess, BUT IT'S GOTTA BE THE DRAGON DRAGON FRUIT" and now I can sit in my rightness 😂 🙌🏼

I wonder what the other fish types could be? Obviously there's sharks, but there's also a wide variety of venomous fish, there's electric fish, along with flying fish. Those could be fun to play with, more so than the Fish-Fish Fruit, Trout Model
