Tf2 is a silly game. But, within it's ridiculousness are a series of interesting weapons that drastically change how people play the, often in very impactful and drastic ways. While not all of these weapons are good, many of them are quite nifty to discect - and that's exactly what we'll do here. Put on your mask and grab your scalpels because we're gonna take a look at TF2's large aresenal of optional weapons.

I think the push for realism is harming games as weapon design is often handy capped by sticking to realistic portrayals of real life firearms.
@HitachiTRQ-225
@HitachiTRQ-225 10 ай бұрын
The worst part is these said „realistic portrayals“ are often completely wrong anyway, many weapons have the completely wrong rate of fire or a recoil pattern that is completely different from what the weapon is like shooting irl and of course damage numbers not matching how their balistics perform irl (though i give damage a pass because game balance)

the smg and pistol for the scout are useful weapons. the balance of the jarate and mad milk in most scenarios is that you lose those weapons for items that only debuff the enemies instead of dealing direct damage. by the way, random crits are not a problem if you account for the chance that any damage taken might be a random crit. the less damage you let the enemy do, the lower the chance you get hit by a random crit. yes, even hitscan can be avoided reliably.

It’s a fun concept though, and I learned that through the LOK-1 Smart Rifle of Deep Rock Galactic. Deep Rock Galactic is a pure cooperative game, with no pvp at all and the only enemies are computer-controlled. In an environment like that, there’s no need to restrain the idea, and what was once on a simple pistol has been upgraded to a rifle. I’ve not played Titanfall, so I can’t speak for the actual gameplay of the Smart Pistol, but I recognize LOK1’s inspiration, and I’ve fallen in love with it. It eats ammo like a black hole, though.

This video actually brings up a great part of game design that I subconsciously slipped into forcing into pretty much every game I can. For example, the loadouts I use in Battlefield 1 are as gimmicky as physically possible, which I think is most apparent by my Assault loadout, where I use the Frommer Stop Auto which fired its entire mag in about a second, has shit control, and low damage, but in 200% damage servers (the only ones I have fun in), it's just barely more than enough to get a kill, I also use the howdah pistol, a four-barreled shotgun pistol (that also happens to be in TF2), which also has abysmal control, but will annihilate anything you can hit, paired with these, I also run the AT Rocket Gun regardless of what clutch piece of engineering can spawn on the map, or even if it's there. I use that thing to sniper people from the longest ranges I can to obliterate them in the most absurd way possible. Hell, I play Support and tanks like they're snipers too. Making the game as strange as possible with as standout weapon designs as I can is the only way I can have fun in games. I dunno, just seemed interesting. Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I think people care way too little about good & interesting weapon design. Sorry for the wall of text.

Another good example is halo. Even though it's a major AAA game franchise it doesn't fall into the pitfall of having just copy paste weapon design. All of the weapons are just outright wacky. Most of them are effective killing machines, some are just pure utilities, but all of them are unique.

Another game that shares this type of "weapon design" is the Garden Warfare series with its character varians. Basically every character has diferent variants that either sacrifice some of its DPS for an status effect (fire, toxic, freze) or completly change how he is played. A clear example of this is the Castus that can go from a sniper-like class that is efective in medium to long-range combat to a Bandit equiped with an automatic neddle gun (?) that sacrifices damage-per shot and acuaracy that dominates in medium to close combat.

Quite entertaining. I will admit I wasn't asking a single question that you, Kaluka, imposed on me using the second person. I hope that spiritual invasion worked better on others.

There was potential for a full battle engie loadout, complete with mini dispenser and mini sentry. Valve ripped the new pda away before it even came out

Fantastic video def gonna sub! My only critique is that you sometimes loop around and make the same points that you did in previous parts of the video which makes it mildly repetitive and drawn out. Besides that, perhaps full weapon and mechanic explanations instead of brief mentions would be a better idea for outsiders who haven't played tf2 before.

This level of editing, and 197 subscribers? Well I just gotta be 198. It's worth noting that, while the wrangler is the best example for engineer's lack of balance, it's not the best example of his weapons being designed around his counters. As far back as the introduction of the southern hospitality that's been a hallmark of his sidegrades, but when the pompson was designed to drain cloak and even uber, and the original short circuit set up a near-permanent No Explosives zone around your gun, the wrangler was actually outclassed as a counter to his counters.

Ty! Typically when I say something is well designed, I don't necessarily mean just it's strength in the existing metagame. Good design can come from being strong, and vice-versa, but even if the wrangler were far worse I'd say it's a cooler weapon to interact with (outside of the stupid shield) than either the pomson or the short circuit. I actually, really detest the short circuit and wished they would change is design into something that more heavily rewards the engineer for taking down individual shots with the primary fire than spamming the alt fire while hugging the payload. Its actually a shame that the wrangler is so good cause it leaves a very bad aftertaste to a very cool weapon, and I genuinely do not know why valve never changed it.

@@kalukagamingfellaguy Oh I don't disagree with your actual point. The point as I understood it was "the wrangler is an example of how one way to make interesting weapons is to have them shake up the matchup chart, since it removes the engineer's range weakness" That is accurate, but it's not the most explicit example engie has of a weapons being designed to shore up weaknesses. I like the idea of the SC rework (bare minimum it needs to not be able to get metal from payloads while active), but they'd have to allow the primary fire to destroy projectiles at all first.
