Tragedy has struck our most loved monitor lizard Slinky. Temperatures got near freezing overnight in Florida and Slinky was able to escape his heated hide box and was trapped outside overnight in the cold. Warning, this is a very upsetting video! This video helped me save my cousins lizard. They presumed it dead because it was super cold, it wasn't moving, and was literally lifeless. I told them to not panic and just slowly bring it's body temp back up and I got the news today that it's still alive! I would've never even suggested that if I didn't see this video!

Okay so from what it looks like you have something like a zoo out in the open and the temperatures are real bad down there why not build a green house made of plastic you can build a huge onr over the enclosure the greenhouse effect is designed for plants but u can use it for reptiles it provides much more heat that the animal needs instead of just leaving the turtle there and covering debris over the turtle thinking it's going to be warm like that provide more heat until naturally it gets hot again then you can let them roam free

I live in Texas, and I work in a pet store. We struggled with the winter storm. The electricity and water went out for a week. Our reptiles looked dead. But they all reacted when we picked them up. We tried our best to warm them up with towels and our body heat. I was so relieved when all of our babies survived.

Tbh you probably already do but you can get emergency reptile heat packs. You basically just squeeze them and they start heating up, with no electricity required. The good ones also don't get too hot and stay hot for 3-6 hours, they can save your reptiles life.

My story isnt about a reptile but when my pitbull was about 10 months old (he is 9 years old now) I lived with my GF at the time and some roommates. Our one roommate had an adult pitbull who lived with us and the dogs were always together. One day after work I was home alone and had a bad migraine. Took some advil and fell asleep on bed. Woke up to the bottle on floor with teeth marks all through it and I found about 11 advil on the floor. The bottle of 50 was about brand new with less than 20 out of it. I was panicking. Didnt know which dog ate advil or which didnt or if they both did. Roommate ended up giving her pit peroxide to make him puke. I took our puppy to the emergency vet. He ended up having to stay there for 2 or 3 days and they said if I didnt bring him in the amount of advil he ate would shut his (i believe liver) down quickly. They had him on fluid IV and I went to see him after the 1st day and he couldn't control his pee from all the fluid and it would just shoot out of him into the air. Poor baby. So glad 9 years later I still have him. Dont have my GF anymore tho lol

It seemed like a genuine mistake, where he forgot to latch something, but then as he did his morning walk through, it was clear that he didn’t even have latches to latch the lid closed. He even stated at the end that he should have bought a latch a long time ago. He doesn’t deserve hate, but ignoring a known point of escape is negligent. (edited to change the word neglect to negligent due to some miscommunication.) If anyone has reptiles, or is looking to get into reptiles, make sure you have the means and proper equipment to take care of them. Especially when it comes to enclosures, reptiles are escape artists. Latches are a must. I guarantee this wasn’t the first time he escaped that enclosure like that.

@@yodad7925 if it were “screwed down with nails” why would he state towards the end of the video that he should have bought a latch a long time ago? I understand accidents happen, but a not getting a $2 dollar latch that takes minutes to put on when you know better, because as he stated this wasn’t the first time it happened, equates to negligence. I’m not persecuting the guy. It’s just not fair to your animals. Complacency can result in near death incidents. It doesn’t matter if the cold came outta nowhere, it is December. December is winter for those of us in the northern hemisphere. It should not have been a surprise.

@@dyzastrus5450 yeah he specified that there are usually screws that he puts in the lid to keep slinky in there... but he said he didn't do a "last walk" and it was too dark to see if the screws were there or not. But he didnt check so... Still his fault, which he admitted dozens of times... but he doesn't seem neglectful, And on the contrary, this IS a rare occurrence and has actually never happened to any of his animals. And why would he neglect his favorite lizard instead of the rest of his reptiles? Unnless this keeps happening, I wouldn't call it neglect. Neglect would be NOT giving him a heating pad, shelter, food, water and other things he needs to live.. He has a lot of animals to take care of and he does a pretty good job, plus you can tell he genuinely cares, which is why he'll probably never make this mistake again.
@dyzastrus5450
@dyzastrus5450 3 жыл бұрын
@@Barry_Macaque I totally agree he likes his animals. I think you may be misunderstanding what I mean by neglect. It has nothing to do with how much you like an animal, or if it happens once or a thousand times. He neglected to secure the lid properly for quite some time, and he neglected to check the lid that night, when it really mattered. I’m not saying he is a bad guy or mean to animals, but you gotta call a cat a cat in this case. Neglect doesn’t mean he was ill willed, it just means he didn’t do what he should have done, when it should have been done, and it almost cost his favorite lizard it’s life. It’s like leaving the fence open to your pool when toddlers are around. If the child falls in and drowns, it is due to neglect. Regardless of if it was the only time they ever left the gate open. That’s what I meant, neglect, in its purest and simplistic form. This is a great learning experience for everyone. No matter how much experience you have, you cannot ignore the small details. What you are referring to would be considered gross negligence.

As a former reptile breeder, even though my reptiles are way smaller than the giant you have. I still shed tears to this video as I know what it feels like to almost lose a pet/family member that I raised and kept in great shape. This field isn’t typically for everyone but it can really shape you for a crazy and wonderful life being in the long run. I had to watch the whole vid to make sure slink was ok, great job on being there for him and making him well.

I literally feel like the only people who comment those things, have never actually had a pet. How can u not feel every ounce of heart break coming from his voice? Only those who have experienced this, really really know. You put your energy into these living beings? You grow them and watch them live and thrive. If u don't lose it when they leave u, ur not human. U can't be. A piece of u goes everytime. Everytime one of my babies leaves this plane, I feel a part of me go with them. Call me sappy and metaphorical, but u give a part of yourself to them when you take them into your home! And they take it with them when they leave.

I think it all depends on what kind of pet you connect with. I've seen people get emotional over fish and insects and it makes perfect sense to me. If you connect with someone and want to be with them for a long time and that ends, it's sad.

They aren’t just lizards. My bearded dragon is my saving grace for so many reasons. I didn’t want him, not really but my mom had gotten in touch with a local reptile rescue and they had one there. I was incredibly underprepared for him. I did research but that’s it. My beardie brought me out of depression, I’m disabled and I had major health problems going on at the time. I haven’t left my room in a year really and I haven’t had a life in 7 years. I’m 20 now. Having him in my room made me not feel so alone all the time. He gave me a reason to get out of bed because he needed me. I love him so much, more than I’ve loved any dog or cat in a long, long time. He is a part of my family 100%. Everyone loves my beardie and have taken amazing care of him when I was hospitalized

I don't have reptails( yet) but i was adopted by a stray kitten unexpectedly couple of months ago. She has a tendency to get everywhere and one morning when i woke up i could not find her ( it had been snowing), i called her and hear a tiny meow,i found her locked in the kitchen's balcony( it's closed balcony, but still much colder than the rest of the house). She had got in there after my grandma and my grandma didn't see her and closed the door leaving her there. Thankfully she was not there for long but she was slightly shaking when i took her back inside , i hugged and cuddled her until she was warm and comfy again, poor baby. My grandma know always checks for her to be sure of where she is and not having the same happen again.

I used to work in the dairy department at a Walmart. One day towards the end of my shift I found a lizard on one of the pallets of milk I was stocking off of. I panicked and scooped the little critter up with me. Depending on when they got on the pallet they could have been in the cold at least sixteen hours. I took the lifeless creature out in the back hall and left them there to warm up. I didn't even know if they were dead. Every once in a while during the rest of my shift I keep checking the spot where I left them. The lizard kept changing all kinds of colors and then I eventually didn't see the lizard where I left them and was relieved. I found them not far away and when my shift was over, I took the lizard home with me and released them into my yard. I really hope they didn't get eaten by something after having survived so much already. Reptiles are resilient little creatures.

I’m convinced one of our gecks died because of just that - they were rescued by a friend but the person she rescued them from had no heat on them for over 24h and she had them in the car with the heat on but it was December in Illinois One gecko was stronger and is just fine. The other we never were able to get weight on her, tested negative for parasites, multiple vet visits.... didn’t make it.

In the medical field the saying when dealing with cold is “you aren’t dead until you are warm and dead”. I am glad he is doing better. I would also suggest making him some easy meals for the next few feedings to make sure his digestive tract is working well and to keep an extra eye on his lungs in case of fluid issues.

Robert Miller 😆 That's right I was just telling someone the same thing. Usually we say ,,They're not dead until they're cold,, but with hypothermia situations or immersion, etc., it's the opposite.

Nurse here, who lives in Canada, and can absolutely confirm that this is not only the saying, but actively practiced. You’re not dead til you’re warm and dead.

You did an amazing job documenting this for others that could run into this issue. Glad you kept your cool (on camera) and showed what needs to be done. Taking responsibility, etc.... You seem like a good dude. Keep being that.

Slinky isn't out of the woods yet my friend, you better get him to a vet and check him for pneumonia! They are prone to getting it from cold weather! That liquid that was coming out of his mouth when you discovered him was a bad sighn!

He said at the end he already talked to his vet about pneumonia and said he’d be watching him closely and carefully to make sure he’s okay.

You people don't understand reptiles. I had a bearded dragon live far past it's life expectancy. I put it in hibernation for a few weeks every single winter

May 2021. Slinky had been vetted several times and is healthy,no adverse effects from his terrible mistake. He is very soon to get a brand new enclosure with his Girl Pinky

I am so glad your baby made it. My dog was healthy or so we thought...when it froze in Texas, we noticed something was wrong. She went from wrestling to struggling to breathe. We learned she had terminal cancer. The cold made it worse on her. Since we lost power she spiraled down hill quickly. We lost our baby girl Itty on 2/21/2021. I told my hubby never want to see snow again.
