Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are finally buying a new engine to add to our train empire! Since there are so many different factors to each of the train engines I decided to buy engines in order of cheapest to most expensive so the first engine we're going to buy and test with Kosmo is the Eureka! ‪@darealkosmo‬

Hello Kan! I’m Thomas4peyton, one of the modelers who works on the game, (I did the Heisler, Class 70, and most of the rolling stock). Loving your coverage thus far and I have a few certified pro gamer tips for you! 1. If you have trouble with selling freight, try moving your track a little closer to the freight depot or sell point. The platform is typically the extent of the hitbox for registering a successful unload. The pond is the same way; logs must enter the pond to be counted. 2. Eureka is low torque but high speed- she will shine the most on gentle grades and wider turns. While not a great logging engine she has plenty of use moving cars across longer distances in less time. As you expand further you will find that moving empty cars is just as important as moving loads- so Eureka and similar high-driver locomotives have their own niche uses. 3. Grades are everything! For more tonnage and higher speed try and lay them as gentle as possible. (Additionally Holding shift + your grade increase/decrease key can change your grade in finer intervals of .25%) That’s all for now! Glad you are enjoying the game. Stay tuned for more updates; we have a lot of exciting things in the pipeline that shouldn’t be too far away. :) (P.S. If you need any help or have a question that needs answering feel free to poke me in the game’s Discord and we can get in touch.)

Trains connoisseur here : Small wheels = More torque but less speed. Good for heavy loads or difficult slopes. Big wheels = More speed but less torque. Good for light loads on flat terrain. More wheels = More traction. Can be a problem with tight curves if they are not articulated. Small wheels before and after the main (motorized) wheels keep the engine stable in high-speed curves. For your present small and tortuous line, you need an engine with articulated small wheels.

The only thing that makes the porter "broken" is the unrealistic distance between stations. The extra power is accurate for a shunting locomotive in the real world, but in the real world the distance between stations makes it unfeasible to run one on a freight line. The game doesn't have that limitation. Which is a good thing, because with accurate distances every run would take several hours...

The marker lights on the end of the tender are: red = end of scheduled train, green = train is split into sections, and a second section (pulled by another loco) is following this one, white = unscheduled or special train. The marker lights are normally on the caboose, but also on the locomotive, in case the loco is pushing the train. Very important safety info, in the days when trains ran on timetables and there was no radio communication with the dispatcher.

@@Pyrrhist If there was too much freight or too many passengers for one train, the railroad would get a second or third train for the remaining freight or passengers. Each train would be called a section, though they would all be considered one “train” on the timetable. Each section would put up green classification lights on their last car, except the last which had red lights. This was important to prevent accidents when running trains using only timetables. For instance, if a west-bound train on a single-track route was on a siding waiting for an east-bound train to pass, they could not leave the siding until they saw the red lights of the last section go by, or they’d risk a head-on collision. (I’m simplifying greatly, I’m sure.)

The generator is for generating electricity, when the locomotive has electric lights, like the Heisler these will only work when it's turned on, it has no effect on power output, it actually uses steam from the boiler. Same goes for the air pump, that needs to be activated (15% will do) to be able to operate the brakes on an airbraked locomotive.

the Eurika is a 440 (4 front wheels, 4 middle/drive wheels 0 trailing wheels) its from the 1870's. It was made to be a passanger runner, the train itself is kinda famous because it was used in dozens of films including the great train robbery. And yes, she's built for high top speed on "express runs", but is not good at pulling heavy loads or travelling up steep grades.

I am a train nerd, and have found your channel because of that. I would suggest leaving cars at the entrances/exits of facilities, so that you can go up hills better with only the cars you need. Edit: For example, around the 25:00 minute mark, you were not able to make it up the hill. What if, you left the loads at the sawmill, got the lumber you needed, and then coming back, you went past the wye (I’m sure you learned what that is from another commenter) and then back in to connect to your planks, then drop off lumber, lastly, unload your planks. Irl railroad logistics departments plan their ‘locals’ so that they can leave the cars that are being used on a main or siding while the engine (in your case eureka) does a little bit of shunting work. It’s an interesting concept, but makes it less taxing on your engine, thus, more efficient.

The Eureka could haul potentially more than the Porter, despite having a nominally lower tractive effort, due to the fact it is twice as heavy as the Porter. How the generator works is the more boiler pressure it has the more electric it has for the lights. The compressor is for the breaks on the locomotives and cars. So the generator and the compressor are two different things but if you want to go fast use the regulator and the reverser back a little bit each time and you will have the speed you want to go. To start out slowly increase the speed then give it pressure to move it

Yeah, his friend was probably thinking of either a blower or a damper. The blower is a steam jet used to increase draft over the fire when starting a locomotive. The damper is a vent in the bottom of the firebox which forces more air through it. The higher the speed of the train the more air gets forced through the damper. How open or closed the damper is can be controlled by the driver.

Any steam engine can be used for any purpose of course but as a general rule a steam engine with four wheels on the pilot truck (the small wheels in the front of the engine) was primarily used for passenger service. Something else you might try doing is using the Reverser. The Reverser works in a similar way to the gearbox in a car; full forward or full reverse are equivalent to first gear, with the closer to midgear (0%) you get the higher the equivalent gear. So you'd always start off in full forward, then as you pick up speed slowly move the reverser towards neutral (no closer than about 20% forward or reverse); this reduces the amount of time steam is permitted to enter the cylinders for on each stroke and allows the expansive properties of the steam to do most of the work for you. It's more efficient and you'll end up going faster because you're not choking the cylinders with more steam than they can easily compress. Source: I'm a locomotive fireman in real life.

After reading a few comments, and seeing the train in action in the video, I think the Eurika will be useful for when you need small cargo, shipped very long distance. Remember, you only have tracks to 1 part of the map, not the entire map yet. The porter while stronger, as you mentioned doesn't have the fuel and water compacity to haul very long distance. But short distance? The Porter is much better. So yeah, probably as soon as you guys start using the other buildings, and start setting up railroads very long distance, you'll find taking smaller loads with the eurika to be better for those distances.

Eureka is really just a passenger engine. Good as an endurance scout with one or two passenger cars at most. @@ifyourmarriedyourasimpanda7440 You are comparing apples to oranges. The Big Boy (4-8-8-4) and the Challenger (4-6-6-4) have the advantages of 60-70 years of technological advancements, 3-4 times the number of drivers, much heavier with the majority of their weight on their drivers (locomotive without tender weight is about 770,000 lbs), higher boiler pressure with larger pistons, and better fuel. Formula for approximate tractive effort is T=(((d^2)sp)/w)x0.85. d=piston diameter, s=piston stroke, p=working pressure, w=driving wheels diameter inches. Smaller diameter wheels mean higher tractive effort. Going solely on the information from the game the Porter weighs 22000 lbs, has a boiler pressure of 120, and has a tractive effort of 6,110lbf. The Eureka weighs 44100 lbs, has a boiler pressure of 120, and has a tractive effort of 5,620lbf. We don't know the piston diameter or stroke but having the same pressure, the smaller wheels of the Porter are better. Some of the weight of the Eureka is the tender. The tender makes up at least 10,000lbs leaving 34100lbs for the locomotive. If 75% of that weight manages to go to the drivers that's 25000lbs which isn't much more than the Porter's 22000lbs with smaller wheels. If the weight is split even as it should the Eureka has at most 17,000lbs on it's drivers. Porter was designed for yard work requiring high torque to pull strings of cars. The Eureka was designed for long distances and faster running. Both were optimal and used most on flat terrain. There's a reason trains then weren't long, the locomotives couldn't pull them.

The basic rule-of-thumb for steam locomotives is: Fewer, bigger wheels = faster More, smaller wheels = pulling power Essentially, while Betsy has only four wheels and the Eureka has eight, only half of the Eureka's wheels are "driving" wheels; the ones powered by the rods. This means that only half of the Eureka's weight is resting on the driving wheels, while *all* of Betsy's weight is on her wheels. This makes the Eureka much more prone to wheelslip than Betsy will ever be. Any locomotive that has only driving wheels like Betsy does will have very high pulling power, but they tend to have lower speeds.

Yeah, use the Eureka for scouting, maintenance of way, or maybe speeding ahead of a main train to make sure the switches are in the right direction
@Pystro
@Pystro 2 жыл бұрын
Oh, speeding ahead of the train to do the switches. That's an original idea. It might make slightly more sense to follow AFTER the freight train and set the switches for the return trip, though. That way you aren't under as much time pressure, and you can push the tail if you do catch up to it. You'll need to plan ahead at least 1 trip, though.

@@Pystro that’s one of the jobs an actual brakeman in the caboose of a slow-moving freight train would be tasked with doing, back in the day, but requires a bit more forethought than I’m expecting from casual players

That Eureka is for passenger cars isn't it? Specifically 3 or 4 cars. If you created a scenic route around the map that would be perfect to add a few passenger cars and invite the train crew you were talking about to sit in the cars as you take them on a tour of the map. And will need the Dev to add passenger cars.... Edit: I'm not a train expert, I've just seen back to the future haha

Research Dev here. I’m gonna have a look at the Eureka and its “generator.” It is technically not supposed to have one, since it doesn’t have any electric appliances to require having a dynamo in the first place. Even in her preserved state, which is what the engine is currently modeled as in game, she doesn’t have a generator of any kind. We will eventually add passenger traffic, so the Eureka and other similar engines will have better use for that, though locomotives like Eureka were marketed by Baldwin (at least by the 1885 Builder’s Catalog) as mixed-traffic locomotives.

Hey! Ship captain here, I recognize those red and green lights you asked about @ 5:14 and I believe they might mean the same thing here that they do on vessels. They are used to tell the direction of travel from a distance at night. Red lights are placed on the left or port side, and green lights on the right or starboard side (relative to the front of the vehicle, so in this case the engine). Knowing this information, if you see a red light traveling on distant tracks then you can conclude that the train is heading left relative to your position, or right if the light is green.
@flyer3849
@flyer3849 2 жыл бұрын
On trains they were used as signal lights, red meant the end of the train, or they used green if it was stopped on a siding and it was clear to pass. White on the front is a extra train and green is a extra on the same schedule

The dev’s where saying in there dev-log they where planning on adding towns for passengers. they also have 70+ locomotives planned for the game. Some tips The geared locomotives have stupid torque but low speed The second to last locomotive I think has 11,000ft-lbs of traction effort compared to the 2,000 with I think the Eureka engine has. Hope this helps.

Maybe run Betsy as a helper engine in the back of the entire train in a push/pull-config or just slot her in right behind the Eureka to double head it? The first option would actually give you the additional benefit of increased overall viewing area, which really helps with (un)loading at platforms as you can see the position of the rolling stock in relation to the platform much better from the rear of the train than from the front.

The red/green are directional lights primarily used on plains, trains & boats. Red is port/left and Green is starboard/right. Therefor you can tell what direction it's moving using the lights. If you see red on the right and green on the left it's coming right at you. If you see two red lights it's passing from right to left etc...
@DerpyPossum
@DerpyPossum 2 жыл бұрын
that’s actually not true. those colored lights are classification lights, used to show the train’s purpose and situation relating to the timetable. White = “extra” train (not shown on timetable). Green = normal train with a following section. Red = back of the train.

To add to what the other commenters said, you also have it quite backwards: less reverser decreases the torque of the engine by reducing its cutoff.

I think the generator should make no diffrence. Tuning down the compressor to 50% once the breaks are fully filled should leave more steam for driving, but it was going at full pressure anyway. I can see the loco work great once we get passenger cars, also it seems much more stable on the track and faster, so i can see some usage when using it with like 8 cars for the long runs. Railroad track should not have more than 2.8% grade, that slope at logging camp is a lot more.

The generator just provides electric power for the lights so has no bearing on locomotive power. The compressor can reduce power so leave it off or on low when not braking. 440s are amazing for high speed trains five cars and under. Can't haul freight to save their life. For the very steep grades your railroad has, buy a geared locomotive like the Heisler. In railroading 1% grades are normal with anything approaching 2% becoming steep for most engines. During WW2 the big boy class of locomotive were built specifically for east-west cargo hauling across the Nevada rise for the extra power needed to haul freight up the "steep" 2.3% grade before the Rockies. After like 3% grade use a geared locomotive instead because nothing else has the tractive effort needed to pull a heavy train up an incline like that. With trains hauling freight, the most important number is tractive effort. Get that number as high as possible.

I notice that you like to run your trains with the Compressor at 100%. If you notice, that puts your air brakes all the way up. Which means you are trying to pulls cars with your air brakes fully applied ALL THE TIME. The air brakes are meant only to assist in stopping the train. Turning off the compressor while you're hauling,, especially with the Eureka, will do two things for you. 1- You will travel faster since you won't be fighting the air brakes the whole time, and 2- You will use less water since you aren't constantly losing steam through the airbrakes any more.
