I just did the same job and found this video very helpful but just to note to anyone doing one - there is no need to drop the subframe at all. Once you have the front end module off - the gearbox comes off and out the front with no problems.

Dan thanks for viewing the channel. I hope the video comes through ok for you on the day ..,, de gassing the Ac system is advisable beforehand. I’ve seen a few damaged gearbox due to failed clutch system ..,, but some of the earlier Mini had a few issues with their boxes as far as I’ve come across.

Very helpful video got a clutch to do soon on my wifes mini one clutch operates fine just has a noisy release bearing hoping it holds out till i get time to do it but your video will come in handy.

@@WMCS I am mate thanks but i have also discovered that the head gasket may have gone too i am not entirely 100% on that yet but i did buy the car knowing there was issues and bought it cheap for what it is as a project, so the clutch is the first job when it comes, i will be doing it step by step exactly have you have done it, are you local to Warrington ha ha....

SooperSkoots it won’t have a DMF it should be a VALEO maybe at about £110 plus vat.

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL I was wondering why this guy would sell me his 2002 Mini 5 speed looking like brand spanking new for 1500.00 ! LOL all it needs is a NEW clutch! LOL I don't know if this video just talked me into or out of getting it. LOL I mean, I am fully capable of this job, but I don't know if I want to do it now. LOL. Amazing Video man, seriously. I really like how there is ZERO BS in it. I can't hear worth a damn anyway and what a enormousness amount of information is here! This is probably one of the best vids I have seen for repair and replacement. I can't even think of another compares. I gotta go see if you have more of these now. looking like you do eh.

Larry Leisuresuit thanks for your review and visiting the channel. I’ve done an updated version of how to just replace the clutch rather than taking the gearbox out. It cuts the replacement time almost by 2 hours .... it’s not a bad job tho ...about 4 hours ....

Kevin, I never realised how much was involved in a Mini gearbox/clutch change. Watching your excellent video, I'm a bit intimidated by the amount of teardown/buildup. Must get me one of those Milwaukee guns though, they're the dogs bollocks.

Allan they are indeed. The good thing about the Milwaukee, I can control the Impact of the tool via my iPhone. They’re not too bad really these mini’s. It just requires a bit of patience.

@@WMCS just had friend look at it n he reckons Its not too bad yet n not too worry til it's worse. Hes done one before so will get him to do when it needs it. I think it's too big a job for me atm. Hes watched you do 3 different ones now too and loves how you took it apart to have easy access to fix part sparing hand damage. Am delighted that with ur vids and his handiness will make it affordable to fix as rest of car is mint. Thank you 🙏 💚

No you don’t. Really need to. Just follow the exact same steps. You’ll be fine. But keep in mind the gearbox is a bit heavy.

Hi Kevin, should there be a gap between the clutch pressure plate and the flywheel after tightening the torq bolts to 20nm? Can't thank you enough for your videos and advice pal. 👍

Hi Martin... after tightening down the bolts. The main thing is the clutch plate shouldn’t move. There may be a small gaps but that’s from the clutch plate groove to allow air to flow through. So it doesn’t overheat.

Does this car have ac? Is there enough flex in the hoses to move the rad assembly aside like you do with ac present on the car?

I have a 2006 mini one with 71k miles. It has a very heavy and stiff clutch. Apparently all older minis are like that but I'm not sure. I've always known modern cars clutches to be very easy. Is this normal or do I need to get it looked at? Thanks.

Yes. Quite often. the only solution is to get a flat head screw driver and a hammer and make a clean cut around the bolt.

Do you mean cutting the tray itself so it can clear the bolts? That was about to be my next attempt to solve it, but thought I'd ask before cutting.

Yes exactly that. And by leaving the bolt in when you fit the tray back that bolt will serve it’s purpose again.

Can you do valve stem seals without removing the head? If so what would be the quote? My mini r56 n12 starts smoking after 20 min of driving, when accelerating in 1st gear.

B B Most engine variants you can do it. Make sure you have the correct pinch tools for the collets.

daniel evans yes exactly the same. I’m gonna do another video this week on a R50.. without having to degas the AC and without disturbing the coolant hoses.

daniel evans not on this one.. you need an AC machine to recover the refrigerant.
