#KarachiElephants: WATCH📽️ the full story!
You surely remember when a month ago our team performed an unprecedented, complicated dental surgery 🦷 on the two Karachi elephants, thanks to which Madhubala 🐘 and Noor Jehan 🐘 can finally live a pain-free life.
This operation 💉 was the culmination of a long preparation. In this moving video, we tell you everything from the beginning. How much the elephants had to suffer, how the team, led by Dr Amir Khalil, prepared for the difficult operation and what else it takes to make such a mission possible and successful and what obstacles can come in the way.
You will also see Malika 🐘 and Sonu 🐘, whose condition has improved so much since our first visit.

Shame it took the courts 8 months to accept the report and give permission for the treatment. Eight extra months of pain and risk of severe infection, thank goodness the team was given the go ahead. Animals deserve better.

It's clear not every elephant can go home to the lands they were taken from. But to stop their suffering with the vet's heroic work is so much more than has been possible. For Four Paws to ensure their enclosure is the best it can be is truly living up to a great responsibility.

I cannot express enough 😢 … how I love ❤️ this!!! To alleviate suffering for these beautiful Elephants makes me so grateful for them!! Born in 1958 & Roger Williams Park Zoo was close to where I lived . I was 3 years old & met Alice the Elephant 💜 What I noticed first was the chains on her legs & swaying back in forth. I looked in her eyes & burst out crying 😭!! I’d beg constantly to visit her & I’d send her love ❤️ starting School at 5 years old I would tell teachers & classmates… that she was my family… 😮 they would laugh at me… but I knew 🐘❤

I am so happy that Kaavan is now free. And my heart breaks for our local (small) zoo that refuses to release our lonely elephant, Lucy, who has spent most of her life alone in a concrete cage. This is located in the city of Edmonton Alberta Canada.

I'm in absolute awe of these people and this team who work so incredibly hard and in and under some incredibly challenging circumstances. Wow, these people are an absolute gift to world, and the animals that are unfortunately kept in inadequate and poor conditions. They and their families must be so proud of these people. What wonderful work they have done here to help these elephants. And I must say, their aftercare and education that they provide to the elephants caregivers is exactly too. They know how to be sensitive to the situation, ofc, I'm sure that's come with alot of practice. But I also see and hear no judgement ever from this team. Only care for the animals, and respect to those who perhaps don't know any better. Wonderful work. I pray these elephants go on to live a better and better, freer and happier, pain free life. It is only what they deserve. ❤

I nearly choked on my toast when I heard it took A MONTH to decide to let the team in, a "Ground breaking decision" he said. There was proof the two elephants were suffering, there was nothing to decide. How would they like severe tooth ache for an extra month whilst their dentist awaited permission.

Thank you FOUR PAWS !! Once again, you helped these poor Elephants so they can live a pain free life… You also showed these ppl how to properly care for these Gentle Giants..I really hope that place does what you guys suggested, so the Elephants can be happier.. The only thing that troubles me, is at the beginning of this Video, it showed the Elephants with chains around all 4 legs, THAT makes me nervous, along with who cut the Tusks in the 1st place..🧐🤔 None the less, Thank you again for helping these gentle Soles !! I absolutely LOVE Elephants & I could watch them all day long !! 🐘💖🐘💜🐘❤️🐘💙😊👍

Thank goodness for Sindh High Court, who like at Islamabad High Court with Kaavan in Islamabad (now relocated to Cambodia Wildlife Sanctuary) ruled that the vet team can do this essential work. There are no qualified vets in Pakistan that can properly treat elephants, obviously as these elephants have been suffering for years. They should all, at the very least be reunited at the safari park and have more ability to roam together and browse together, for they were all captured together and brought together as very young elephants to Karachi. Very well done to Four Paws team back in Pakistan, and I hope that you are able to monitor their progress and future living regime

Awwww...what an amazing surgeries! Ground breaking for sure! I also love Dr Amir and whole team to the Moon and beyond! I follow all their rescues and work like a hawk. It is always such a heart warming feel good viewing. I hope all four elephants can be together in that Safari Park. Green, green grasses, trees and bushes and all that space to explore! Beautiful place for eles and Pakistan's people to visit and enjoy. THANK YOU!! xoxoxox

Do not forget that donations make these rescues possible. Even if the government of a country agrees the situation requires improvement they most often do not have the resources in funds or a place to move the animals to, do not have sufficient sanctuary facilities. Donations to organizations like Four Paws make great birthday, holidays of all kinds, memorial remembrance celebrations of a loved ones life, and sometimes just because support save lives and tips the scales towards the good on our planet. Plus, especially for kids they can see the effect of supporting Four Paws on KZfaq!

It was a great result and hopeful. It is a GREAT SADNESS that the recommendations of Four Paws that the Karachi Zoo elephants were not moved to the Safari park, that no evidence of the other lifestyle changes have been implemented and now 1 of them is severely ill, again. I understand Four Paws has been invited to help and has accepted and is due in the next few days in Karachi, I am very grateful for she would surely have died if you had not been able to come to her rescue. But how can we insist that the ongoing health of the elephants is dependent upon your team’s recommendations being put in to practice? Or will Four Paws have to continue to be their permanent Vet team? I know you have too many other commitments to do that, and have to spend Members money wisely, please please can we find a way to enforce appropriate welfare practices and training up of local vet teams and zoo keepers?

Hi Carey, we completely understand your concern. We are aware of the situation of Noor Jehan and in contact with the zoo in Karachi. The FOUR PAWS team treated Noor Jehan and Madhubala with a unique tusk surgery in August 2022 at Karachi Zoo and recommended then that both elephants have to be relocated as soon as possible, as the zoo cannot provide species-appropriate and safe conditions. We are not aware of any steps taken to proceed with the relocation of the two elephants so far. Meanwhile Noor Jehan has developed problems with her hind limbs that leave her limping and in physical distress. FOUR PAWS has supported with advice on her treatment but this is not enough for her. Noor Jehan still lives in the same enclosure, which is unsuitable for her species-specific and physical needs, especially given her current condition. She needs a place where she can express her natural behaviour, and which can provide enrichments to relieve her condition. Therefore, FOUR PAWS is currently in contact with Karachi authorities to urge them for immediate medical assessment and required medical intervention for Noor Jehan in the interest of animal welfare along with an evaluation of possibilities for a species-appropriate place for the elephants.

That is freaking tragic that those 4 elephants were taken from Africa as babies. (China has ended up with a lot of elephants taken from Africa as babies - lots of money to be made and corrupt governments in African have allowed this.). Horrendous. If those tusks were removed to make (a lot of) money from them, it happened after they grew so it had to have happened while they were in captivity in Karachi. Quite ghastly. At least those two imprisoned in the zoo were allowed to go to the safari park...Four Paws does such compassionate and effective work.

8 months??? After learning that it was urgently needed and had been going on and quite painful they were not given the ok for 8 months. Pakistan that is horrible!

Hi BamaRN, unfortunately, things do not move always as fast as we want, and decision making take time. After the assessment in November 2021, the FOUR PAWS team submitted to the High Court of Sindh an assessment report on the health and well-being of the elephants. Based on this report and the local petitioner’s (Pakistani Animal Welfare Society) request, the court ordered the FOUR PAWS team to conduct the treatment of the elephants in Karachi. The team immediately prepared a treatment plan, ordered the development of special equipment needed for the treatment of the broken tusks, and begun necessary training of the elephants and their local keepers, which also took some time. Best, the FOUR PAWS team

My only prayer is that the men that took 8 months to approve “urgent” treatment for a painful abscessed trunk, already painful for a year, are forced to wait the same length of time they forced these sentient, intelligent elephants to wait for treatment!

What is happening to the poor Ele who is deformed with his/her disability and can barely stand. I'm not sure if it's the same zoo, but it's disgusting that they are keeping this Ele in such terrible condition. It's absolutely heart breaking to see.

@@FOURPAWSInternational unfortunately the video I saw was totally in Indian, but I think it was sweet Noor Jehan, finding other footage, at least he's not suffering anymore. The zoo and safari park should be closed down. Yes, I've just found another video that confirms it was Noor Jehan. I I know that you did everything that you could, but the zoo and keepers weren't genuine in making efforts. Still breaks my heart. 😭💔. xx

Noor Jehan passed away in April 2023 after a fall from which she couldn't get up anymore. 😢 RIP Noor Jehan 🙏💜

@@petrapost1 thank you Petrapost. I did actually catch up with this sad news. I only have a limited tablet that gives me You Tube stories in no particular order, date or otherwise....it seems to just do its own thing, so sometimes I do get out of the loop, so to speak, but Four Paws wrote to me and having established what I was on about, they were able to update me. I'm just glad that poor Noor Jehan is no longer suffering.... God bless her. Thank you again for taking the time. x
