This video is a demonstration for my students on how to make a proper patty out of our brown stoneware for each glazed stoneware piece prior to glaze firing. Students must also complete a kiln ticket for their glazed pieces and place them all- patty, piece, and kiln ticket in the drying cabinet to prepare for firing!
If you have ever had drippy glaze on a kiln shelf ruin your day- the use of patties just might make the difference!
Patties can be fired raw under glazed pieces as long as they are bone dry by the time the kiln ramps above 200. I will dry out the patties that are fresh with a 3-4 hour preheat to make sure. For my patties at home, I make them thicker and kiln wash them for multiple uses.
Here is a link to the kiln ticket I use with my kids: docs.google.com/document/d/1I...
For the great tools I use frequently in my videos (including the mudtools ribs and needle tools) check out this link to a live Googledoc I continually update with lots of my favorite tools on Amazon using my associate links! docs.google.com/document/d/1X...
I made this video for my Ceramics students at Mason High School. All students make patties and kiln tickets for all our stoneware glaze firings. I often reuse the patties for the lowfire glaze firings.
I am a public high school ceramics teacher at William Mason High School in Mason, Ohio. (Mason is currently the largest high school in Ohio!) As a potter, I have been working in clay for over 30 years, and I have been teaching for over 28 years, the past 20 have been specifically teaching high school ceramics. I love what I do! I have my own studio in my home basement, where I work on my personal pottery for my Etsy site; www.etsy.com/shop/KaransPotsA...
I started my KZfaq channel a few years ago, to make videos to help my students if they are absent and miss a demo, or if they would like to explore more advanced techniques independently. I have been amazed to reach such a wider audience than my own students!
Please subscribe to my channel if you would like to receive channel updates, or would like to learn more about clay and studio processes!

Holy Cow! Complete game changer for the classroom. I cannot express my thanks enough!

Hi Jennifer- yes, the patties have to be totally dry before the kiln exceeds 212 degrees, or the water vapor will blow them up! I have my kids make them VERY thin... like a tortilla- and and dry out the kiln about 3 hours on low- (Or just open with a fan on it over night if you don't want to have the kiln on a preheat) if I have placed new, wet patties in it. The use of patties has changed my teaching life- before the careless glaze application by a student would cost me a great deal of valuable time cleaning off glaze drips from the shelf... but now, the consequence falls on them as they will have a patty fused to the pot if they were careless! (I even use them at home in my own kiln for my own pieces! Those I use at home I actually kiln wash too prior to use to extend their life/repetition of use!)

What a great idea! Unfortunately I am just about to chisel and re-wash my kiln shelves after experimenting with some new glazes, so I’m definitely going to do this from now on! Thanks so much 🤗

It was such a game-changer for me!!! And, if you’re doing it for your personal firings- I actually make my patties a little thicker - fire them, then kiln wash them before using them! :). That way they last lots longer!!

Does the patty have to be completely dry before firing??

I made these but some of them aren’t perfectly flat. Does this matter? Also if I put glaze that has crystals on it do I need a cookie the entire size of the piece or just a little bigger than the bottom? I have an oragami bowl that is very shallow and I have glaze with crystals on the back but close to the top. I need to know if it will run straight down or will it stick to the pot and roll down? Thank you sooo much!!

Thank you for all of your wonderful videos...invaluable to me as I am inexperienced but have the opportunity to teach ceramics to my HS students. The patties do not have to be bisque fired first?

Hi Linda! No- I just make sure they are bone dry before I fire above 200. I preheat it for an hour or two!

Hi Karen, i always bisque fire my patties first then use kiln wash. So you can just use your raw clay in a glaze fire underneath a glazed piece???? In a pinch....

Does it make a difference what clay you use for your glaze patties?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 4 жыл бұрын
I only use stoneware- as then I can use them both in low and high fire firings. If I were to use earthenware, I’d be restricted to using them only with earthenware firings.

Can clay patties be reused? Should I put kiln wash on kiln patty?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 4 жыл бұрын
If planning on reusing for more than two or three times, yes- I recommend kiln washing them! I do that in my home studio- but not at school!

I use b mix no grog.. can I make patties out of that?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 жыл бұрын
Yes- however, BMix when fired repeatedly will probably bloat and bubble. It you have access to a slightly higher firing clay, you may find the patties las longer!

Why do they have to be that thin?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 жыл бұрын
For my classroom- it’s because we fire them immediately as green- and I don’t want them to blow up in the preheat on the glaze fire. You can make them thicker and bisque them to reuse them!

Don’t they need to be almost perfectly flat?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 жыл бұрын
Yes- the patties are flat when the kids place them on the ware board. Tossing the clay thinly and stretching makes it flat!

I find this very interesting. I go to a nonprofit community art studio and they insist on having all patties (aka cookies) bisque fired before you can use them with a glazed piece. It sounds like as long as they are thoroughly dried they could be used. I believe all the clay that we use there, or that they offer, can be fired at 5 or 10. Is my assumption correct as long as they are thoroughly dried but not bisque fired they would be OK to use for a glaze firing?
@KaransPotsAndGlass
@KaransPotsAndGlass 2 жыл бұрын
That is correct! It’s definitely less risk to bisque fire them first! If bisque fired, you can immediately start climbing the kiln temperature with no preheat. In addition to preheating to dry- another disadvantage of using them raw- is they are easy to break if bone dry- that’s why I try to load when leatherhard- (and either let them dry overnight in the kiln or just preheat) Since I’m the only one responsible for firing my kilns, I have no issue controlling the preheat to make sure they are all thoroughly dry! (It’s just more of a pain for those loading and firing to use them raw)
