Two high kicks from very close range that work well for me are: Otoshi Mawashi Geri or Tate Kubi Geri / all the other names it was given in different schools and organisations. Others call it the "brazilian kick" or "question mark kick", and you can see many Kyokushin fighters throw it from close range. The other one is Ura Mawashi Geri, which you can basically throw even from the clinch. Dangerous one though, as it lands on the back of the head.

All good techniques! Back in the day, I trained with a man who was so freaky flexible, that in sparring, if I was close enough to grab his gi and punch him in the face, he could take his lead leg and side kick me under my jaw with only a slight lean back. Rarely, I could do a turning side kick to his face to defend that, but I had to be ready or he'd nail me.

@Docinaplane

@@Elurin No question Wallace was a great kicker, but no, the man I referred to was not Bill. I have met Bill, however and had a very nice talk with him. Getting the knee up would not work in a really close position with a side kick (hook kick yes) This guy could drop the knee and turn his leg so the foot was free to go straight up. Believe me, when he did it, I was surprised. I thought I was safe being that close.

VERY NICE!! Makes for a really good set of drills. Good for legs. I'll play around with that today. Because of Covid I haven't really trained in the gym for about 8 month. Train at home. Important to keep the kicks and legs conditioned. That's harder to get back when it fades. Which I already feel.

I'm pretty sure whatever it is I needed to do at the time will be considered illegal or unacceptable on the mat. I'd borrow techniques from (in no particular order) Muay Thai (see the friendly fight/sparring match bet a Muay Thai champion & Jesse Enkamp in Sweden), Chinese kicks, one of them an 'oblique' kick, some unusual 'kicks' used by Bujinkan (koryu taijutsu) practitioners. I forgot to add kicks coming from FMA. As an aside, I'm not Korean (although I'm using a Korean pen name).

I also like getting in with a jab, cross combination followed by a crescent kick (sorry, don't know the Japanese word for it as I practise a different style). Because the body is already turned from the cross, the kick follows quite naturally from outside to inside. If you leave the cross hand in front of the opponents eyes as well, it can be a very unsuspecting kick.

I don't think the third step would be effective in Kyokushin full contact style sparring but I can be wrong. Other close range attacks that I do sparring are knees, elbows and leg kicks. One kick I'm experimenting with is the low heel kick/Gedan shoto kakato to the thigh.

I like the Chudan “shovel hook” or “uppercut” (a boxing maneuver in which you imagine that your punch will rise the opponent off the ground). Following a straight punch or jab, hardly anyone ever expects it (sneaky).

Close range If I want to kick I use a lot of crescent kicks that are either designed to be really fast(just to intimidate and not let someone close distance) Or as precise kicks that swing around someone’s guard Imo short range is always for attacks that are more based in a squared stance(front kick, knees, crescent kick, axe kick) any kick from a extremely bladed stance takes more set up and feints to close distance

Well why not knees to the body or thighs, hips and stomach, those are perfect for very close range. Then you have otoshi geri (descending axe) 🪓 kicks which of course are best fired at close to mid and somewhat close range. If you want to be more acrobatic, you also have jumping, spinning, descending heel kicks, of which Australian Kyokushinkaikan Karate former heavyweight champion, as well as World Kickboxing heavyweight champion and former K-1 World Grand Prix competitor, Peter Graham is famous for, as he broke in three places the jaw of Morrocan former K-1 World Grand Prix fighter, Badr Hari in their first fight in New Zealand. Then last but not least you also have the devastating Brazilian roundhouse kicks of Shihan Francisco Alves Filho, as well as Sensei Glaube Feitosa, both Kyokushin Karate and K-1 World Grand Prix successful competitors, often knocking out their opponents, be it in Kickboxing or Kyokushin Karate full contact fights, with their Brazilian roundhouse kicks, at very close range and at lightning speed.

So mentioned below, hook punches would work. Since I’ve never concentrated on training for tournaments, I’ve developed my Karate for self defense. So I’ve done thousands and thousands of precisely controlled eye gouges and throat attacks as counters with real opponents who were really trying to hit me with their best punch-they can be done from a medium Ma or even a quite close Ma.

Oh and I forgot to mention, groin attacks! I think it was in the late ‘90s, I drove down to our old central Dojo in Los Angeles. At the end of practice I was doing Sanbon with a guy half again bigger than me and much younger. I was slipping past his first 2 attacks, but on his 3rd I just waited for him. When he started his attack I slipped my front foot straight forward just on the outside of his front foot. I brush blocked his right attacking hand with my left hand and did a groin extraction counter with my right. 2 senior Yodans were seated watching, one an old friend of mine and the other I didn’t know. The guy I didn’t know said, “Interesting counter!” I replied, “Old guys have to do what WORKS!” LOL

Small men against large man just can't WIN. They will hurt/KILL you before you do 3 or 4 techniques. So What! When I'm in too close, about to be smothered (maybe get out) or can't get out . Jam them up (grab clothing & climb over shoulder to back or drop & kick under chin , go around legs, use sleeper. Of course, there's step behind but a HULK HUGE stops that. Drill like the game, you loose, you get punched in your stomach! Drill until you can apply a sleeper. Now maybe someday you will live.
