"The movies back in the 80s were crazy! " Ha ha ha yes they were, real stunts, real fire no CGI. It looks real because it is! It was also about making people go "Woah!" Even though The Perfect Weapon came out in 1991, it's still looks and feels like a late 80s movie. A fun martial arts action film that was designed to demonstrate Jeff Speakman's martial arts talent. He still trains students in America to this day and is loved by many.

the big henchman's name is Professor Toru Tanaka. he was very popular Jiu-Jitsuka and professional wrestler. May he rest in peace.

Wow! Brings back memories. This film had some of the most legendary Asian actors of the era. Sadly, we lost Mako and Professor Tanaka many years ago (Professor Tanaka was in a bunch of stuff, and was also a pro wrestler. Mako fought Bruce Lee in the TV show The Green Hornet, was the wizard in Conan the Barbarian, and Conan the Destroyer with Arnold Schwarzenegger, and also played the teacher in the sweet coming of age film with Chuck Norris, "Sidekicks" among many many others). Many other actors as well that really made a mark and broke down barriers over the years (so many faces from iconic movies and shows, like MASH, Kung Fu (the TV series), Big Trouble in Little China, Showdown in Little Tokyo, etc.) Your video made me google James Hong (Yung). I am delighted to note that he is still alive and working at 93! He is in Everything Everywhere All At Once, with Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis. I am so excited to see it! American Kenpo "borrowed" quite a few movements from the Philippine stick fighting arts. The hips and legs are engaged but used in shorter, faster movements which are hard to catch on film.

At the time this film was made the founder of American Kenpo was still alive ED Parker, Jeff Spearman was either a 5th or 6th dan also at that time. He also incorporated Jiu Jitsu into his own style of American Kenpo as far as I know but I could be wrong he is the first and only one to do so. He did not form his own style as far as I know until well after Mr. Parker died.

Nice. The Kenpo technique he does at 5:56 is a version of Thundering Hammers.

The big guy is named Professor Tanaka he was a professional wrestler in the 70s and 80s and a judokan before that. Striking with the forearm like he did is from his wrestling days and done with the kind of strength the professor can put behind the strike they are surprisingly effective. It's similar to the concept of a mua thia shin kick were the shin is what does the damage instead of the top or ball or heal of the foot. Granted you don't get the same impact energy as the kick but done properly you can generate an impressive amount of energy and professor Tanaka is sort of a Sherman tank in a suit ( a quote from Chuck Norris from one of his movies that Professor Tanaka also stared in.

Those are escrima sticks. Ed Parker was famous for his knife skills and usage of knife katas in Kenpo as well as sticks. The strike to the guard after the pole vault is a ridge hand strike to the nerves in the side of the jaw utilizing Kyusho jitsu pressure point fighting strikes. Kenpo does lots of strikes and joint attacks. It is also called Kenpo Jujitsu in America for this reason.

8:08 regarding throwing a knife (or most objects that aren't weighted evenly), the accuracy of the toss is dependent on the heavier weighted part to guide the path of the projectile. Overhand toss, heavier on top, so at point of release heavier side going forward, like an axe throw.

All the techniques Jeff Speakman uses in this move are actually by the book techniques most time it’s move for move .

Medical bills are high in America, but it's really the best way. If one relies on universal healthcare, like Canada, for example, the treatment and options become VERY limited, to the point where many hospitals have 4-6 hour wait times. Also hospitals get a set amount of funding which limits occupancy to any one hospital. It's not unheard of for someone to be taken to a hospital in Canada, only to be told they CAN'T accept any new patients, and that ambulance will have to take a person somewhere else, maybe several miles away. At least in America you will almost ALWAYS be taken to the nearest hospital where you WILL receive care, as decreed by federal law. Also legal action can NOT be taken against someone who DOESN'T or CAN'T pay medical bills. Also medical debt DOESN'T show up on credit scores/checks, so there are no major consequences for failing to pay.

I agree about not utilizing body strikes on the big guy maybe foot stomp on top of the foot & kick just above the knee while attacking the eyes

2 things: It was a cushion factory so I could see how they didn't hear him. The leg strangle hold is very possible. Build your leg strength and you can not just knock out someone but kill them either by suffocation or snapping their neck. Thigh muscles are very strong bc I remember my sister took martial arts and I could not get out of her leg scissors as a little kids LOL.

If you want another Speakman movie that's pretty good to watch check out one called The Expert I like it almost as much as The Perfect Weapon

Garry Tagawa, played as the main villain in Showdown in Little Tokyo, as well as Shang Tsung in the first Mortal Kombat movie.

The part where Jeff Speakman chokes the guy out with his legs, is possible but not with the way he had his legs. The straight leg was placed behind the "opponents" head like a brace and he was using is other leg to cut off the blood flow of the carotid arteries, which is a blood choke. Also, where Speakmans' foot was over top of his knee was a hinderance! If anything he should've hooked the back leg overtop of the instep of the foot of his front leg and point his toes towards the ground, it would be like having a no-arm triangle choke, but to insure to quickly incapacitate he could use one hand to cover the "opponents" mouth and nose to cause panic and disrupt breathing. or He could've just snuck up and used a rear naked choke! Great video!

With a throwing knife you typically hold it by the lighter end, which is usually going to be the blade end, it gives better rotation.

Regarding the hospitals question. Here in Denmark where I live, the government supports it all. Even going so far as to having set a time limit for treatment. If the public hospital can't treat you within 6 weeks, you are permitted to seek treatment on private hospitals and the government will still pay for it 👍

One weakness in American made martial arts movies was sometimes the writers would confuse languages and terminology from different Asian cultures. They’ll say karate when they mean taekwondo, or they’ll say yakuza when they Jopok or Kkgangpae (Korean mafia). Although when they wrote things like “Yeung has ties with the yakuza” they may have meant that he had business dealings between his Korean Jopok and the Japanese Yakuza. But with them using Korean and Japanese words interchangeably throughout the movie, that’s giving them a lot of credit. One movie that I would love to see your reaction to is Way Of The Dragon, starring the late great Bruce Lee. The climax of the film is a one on one fight between Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris. You can either watch it in the original Cantonese with English subtitles, or dubbed into English. As much as I dislike having to read subtitles while watching a movie, the original Cantonese version would probably be better. For one thing, the scenes where Bruce’s words have to be translated into English would make a heck of a lot more sense in the Cantonese version. Of course, you would be watching it for the martial arts fights, and there are some really good ones. There’s scenes where Bruce is fighting guys who don’t know any martial arts, so the fights are completely one sided. And then there’s the scenes where Bruce has to fight the karate experts who the mafia hired to kill him, which are incredibly well choreographed and look amazing. Those are the scenes that you would probably be most interested in seeing.

A theme you'll see from US movies around this time is that the final fight is rarely won by strength or skill. The hero always has to use their head and do something to think the final fighter they can't beat.

Whether you grab the knife by the handle of the blade depends on how far away the target is and the balance of the knife

You should react to Rumble in the Bronx or First Strike. And yes, you can “choke” someone out with your legs, although choke isn’t probably the best word since it usually isn’t restricting the windpipe. There are arteries in the neck when restricted can render a person unconscious pretty quickly (3-5 seconds), and it doesn’t take much pressure to do it.

In the U.S. by law you can't deny medical care to someone without insurance . Also in California where you have had so many people entering the country illegally and have no insurance--many hospitals had to close. Lastly the government requires them to treat everyone, but doesn't help pay the bills. P.S. look into: James Lew--from this movie and Toro Tanaka-- the main villian and Mako. They had very long careers in acting, martial arts and pro wrestling.

They look to me like "devil's brigade" style daggers, variations on the Fairbairn-Sykes dagger used by Allied second World War commandos. I don't think it's ever said what branch or unit the two men served in, but this might be a clue to some cut scenes or dialogue. [EDIT] there might be some other clues in the film, but you'd have to scrutinize the film to know. But it's the case in other films: for instance we can infer that Sheriff Teasle in First Blood is a Korean War vet from the decorations in his office and the way he commands his deputies when they go into the woods after Rambo.

Two parts in this movie I always crack up laughing. Jeff speed slapping the guy in the club and when the guy blew up because of the prop in the scene. LOL!!! Don't mind me, I'm weird like that. In my country Mexico, we have both public and private healthcare, public is free if you are an employee, they also cover the medicine, if they have stock. the private is extremely expensive even with a good insurance you have to pay a lot one day of hospitalization can be around 50,000 pesos and that is a high monthly wage in Mexico just in a single day of hospitalization. Private hospitals in Mexico are mostly for medical tourism from the USA or for the top 0.1% of the country.

With regards to the British health care costs, we pay what's called national insurance which is a tax that is deducted from our salaries each month, so it's not exactly free.

When I trained with knives and throwing knives, it really depended on the type of knife I was using. Some were weighted to be thrown from the hilt, but I did train with several types that were designed to be thrown from the blade, but you really had to know what you were doing if you were using those knives as you could easily cut your hand on release if you weren't careful. But at that range, he probably wouldn't have been able to hit with killing accuracy, but it does look cool. Kali Stick Fighting is something I've always wished I could have trained in as it goes so well with many martial arts styles.

There are many different techniques for throwing knives simply because there are many different kinds of knives. Knives designed specifically for throwing are designed and balanced differently than knives whose primary purpose is melee combat. A throwing knife will often be constructed specifically to be gripped by the handle when thrown. But some knife throwing techniques use gripping the blade as a way of overcoming the fact that the knife being thrown isn't designed primarily for that purpose, and isn't weighted and balanced for optimal throwing. If you do some research you'll see that knives designed for throwing are much more aerodynamic and symmetrical than a typical K-bar or Bowie knife.

Also in regards to medical bills here, it varies on what insurance covers. I've been uninsured and things were greatly reduced. With medical insurance some things are 100% covered off the bat, some things you have to reach your out pocket limit before insurance pays, some things are copay cost as little as $10. I had to have dental surgery 2 years ago, which would.have cost $1400 total, only ended up paying $300 due to my coverage plan. And in certain countries that have universal health care, certain medical procedures cost as much as here because they are nit covered or waiting for care takes longer than to pay out of pocket/go with private insurance and get treatment.

From my very limited knowledge of knife throwing the end you hold depends on the range and the end you want to hit with, different knives spin at different rates and you need to adjust
