As a thank you for all the notes about Japanese culture, some notes about American culture: Most adults were kids when video games first became popular, and we still play them. In fact, the Nintendo Switch is very popular, because it is portable. Because of the way many buildings are laid out, it’s not uncommon for the mat to be between the front door and the changing rooms. Some dojos are strict about taking off your shoes before crossing the mat, others less so. And, not all visitors are equally respectful. Yes, Metallica is a real metal band. In fact, they are considered to be one of the all time great metal bands. American English in particular is given to exaggeration as a form of expression. Best, worst, greatest, etc. are used often. One of our cultural peculiarities. Due to the cultural influence of Christianity, there’s a strong emphasis on forgiveness and redemption in American culture, especially the idea that everyone deserves a second chance, whether they actually do or not. That’s why Johnny lets Kreese back into his life: Kreese asked for a second chance. I didn’t think he deserved it when I first watched the season, but I understood why Johnny gave it to him. Very much enjoying these videos. May St. Algorithmas bless your channel! 😆

Have to give respect to Mary Mouser, (Sam) and Gianni DeCenzo (Demetri) for such athletic performances, both being type 1 diabetics IRL, a condition that does not necessarily effect their abilities/skills, nor does it make them any more "fragile" then the others, but it does mean they has to monitor themselves more carefully then anyone else because physical activity is one of many things that can drop their blood sugar levels to dangerous levels quite quickly, and if ignored, can easily require medical intervention. I'm sure that they and the crew are keeping on top of everything. I doubt either of them would have stuck around for 4 seasons if things were not safe for them. Their condition is a way of life for them, and it is all about them controlling their condition, and not letting their condition control them. Much respect to them, and anyone else who prove that there is still life to be lived even with a chronic condition such as diabetes.
@spacemonkeyentertainment6413

I don't mean to judge her too harshly, but Sam, honestly, is my biggest complaint on the show, not from a character perspective and i think Mary Mouser does a good job with the dramatic parts, but she just isn't a martial artist. It borderline annoys me every time i see her being "physical". Can't even go with the "oh they wanted a pretty face" defense, because Julia Maggio, her stunt double and choreographer, is quite the looker herself. I just feel there have to be actresses out there who bring that side to the table as well and Mary Mouser just doesn't imo. Oddly enough Peyton List apparently was worse than Mary Mouser when they started working, but imo it doesn't show.

@@mynameis4555 Uhm, no ? If anything i have said that she is NOT athletic in the sense that she clearly doesnt do any sort of martial arts ? No idea where you get the point about "her being pretty and putting in the work" from, but okay... If anything those are good qualities, even if the end product is still mediocre. My point is, they could have gone with someone with a background in, idk, kickboxing or someone who has done some self-defense training for more than 5min instead of spinning classes and yoga. Can't tell me that there's noone running around out there that fits the criteria and is capable of acting. My point about Julia Maggio was a bit in jest, i admit. Maybe she can't act to save her life or just doesn't want to, can't help that, i guess. But the point remains, Sams stunts are so full of cuts it's almost like they are trying to compete with that infamous scene from "Taken". Yes, she tries, no doubt, give her a medal or whatever, but still... Maybe you like her performance when it comes to fighting, maybe you can't seperate it from the rest of the show, whatever it is, no problemo, you do you, glad you enjoy the show. But if you want to tell me that her fight scenes aren't full of "movie magic", by which i mean "more so than for any other actor/actress", then clearly you haven't been paying attention. If you want to argue otherwise, i'd like to hear it.

Yeah, anyone who's worked with cement a bit, and inevitably succumbed to the temptation to just use their bare fingers to handle or work it, is just cringing at the idea of kids in a cement truck getting smothered in the stuff. And yes, the dust is more than an irritant - inhaling it will cause permanent lung damage, ultimately giving you silicosis. You want something potentially WORSE than smoking for your lungs, well inhaling cement dust is a good contender.

Already giving this a like because I know yor commentary is going to be great. I still say the first season was a minor miracle. They so managed to do what we all want from sequels and follow ups - make it totally different from the originals while simultaneously remaining totally the same. Almost narratively impossible, but they so did it. P.S. I live outside Atlanta where they film, and some of the scenes with Daniel and Robby training in the woods and by the lake were shot in a park like fifteen or so minutes from my house.

Great idea for a channel your perspectives are very interesting to an Australian guy. Australians have always had a huge exposure to American media and this franchise is just example of many, but I personally have had a love for all things martial arts and eastern philosophy. As a kid I explored this fascination and love through Japanese anime pop culture, specifically Shonen styles, but you get a blurry image of what lies at the heart and tradition of these ideas. Hearing your authentic reactions/commentaries to some of the huge American bastardisations of culture helps me clarify my own misconceptions on these things. In a previous video you chuckled at the high fantasy aspect of Robby and Daniel training in the forest and I totally agreed with how these things appear in media. But one thing I think that you should know as a Karate Master that is closer to the culture, is that a lot of people long for a connection to something with so much tradition and rich history such as Karate. Its glorified in media for sure without all the blood, sweat and tears, but the very idea of belonging to an ancient community of Karate practitioners already has a sort of magic or fantasy like aspect too it, especially considering it also has values connecting to spirituality, philosophy and wisdom.

Thank you for reacting to this show. It brings back memories from my child hood of the karate kid movies. The karate kid and the power rangers was the reason I started taking up martial arts in the first place. And the fight between Johnny and kreese reminded me of my first day in muay Thai. Someone challenged the owner of the dojo I was training at. The owner was 68, but moved just as fast as any man in his 20's or 30's. Needless to say master saenchi effortlessly put the guy on his butt in a half a round.

I discovered your channel this morning and have been greatly enjoying your commentary. I especially appreciate the translations and your unique perspective on the movies and the series. You've asked a number of times about wearing shoes on mats or in dojos in the United States. I don't think the show is very realistic in this respect. Everywhere I've been, this is considered disrespectful. You asked about the actor who plays Kreese (Martin Kove)... he is 75 years old. Sanka is an old brand of instant decaffeinated coffee. "Sanka" is short for "sans caffeine." Yes, Metallica is a real band. 😂 They were were huge in the 80s and 90s, they won 9 Grammys (nominated 23 times), they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2009, and according to the Nielsen SoundScan they have the best selling album of all time (in the United States). The "rocks" that Johnny broke at the end are concreat blocks. The type used in the show are porous and relatively easy to break when suspended without any support underneath them (I find them easier to break than wood). Fun fact: The original Karate Kid movie was filmed during a real tournament and you see the occasional real participant in the background (one of which is my uncle).

If you are wondering who those two people are in the picture before Chojun Miyagi, that is Miyagi Shimpo Sensei, is of Sakugawa Kanga, a teacher of tou-di (the precursor to modern karate). The photo also resembles Morihei Ushiba, the founder of aikido.

I really like your genuine and calm reactions to these videos. Plus the free education and insight you are sharing with your viewers is very much appreciated. However, I've always wanted to learn some form of martial arts when I was a lot younger. I could also use some form of exercise too in my daily routine so perhaps I will look into some of the lessons you offer on the channel! THANKS AGAIN!! 😊

Score one for the KZfaq algorithm. Thank you for making these videos. It's 2:48am and I know I probably should be a sleep right now but I've got some insomnia thanks to a recent surgery and binge watching your channel has really helped distract from the pain that comes along with recovery. Thank you again for taking the time to upload I can tell already I'm going to enjoy the content here. 🙏🍺

Sanka is a brand of instant decaffeinated coffee, very popular back in the 60s and 70s, I always had the impression it was a “blue collar working man’s cheap coffee” when I was growing up in the 80s, which kind of tells the audience a bit about Kreese’s background. That’s always been my impression.

The fact that you are so young and are watching this story that I grew up with as a teenager. That you are so emotionally invested in the characters and the story (its obvious you are) is pretty cool. I love the reviews of the story and the actual Karate moves also. Yes Metallica is a real group and you really must listen to them, although it was late late 80's to mid 90's mostly. But excellent intro into Metal music ( that's the genre). Keep up the good work!

Taping the nuckles is a western boxing thing. It's done because the heavy bag pictured is canvas and has a rough texture... due to friction it will tear up the skin of your knuckles pretty quickly. So boxers tend to tape their knuckles. They also tend to put tape on under their gloves but that's more for extra wrist and hand support.
