I agree with you Chris. Although I think that Karen and Judith Durham ( The Seekers ) both had the best female voices even to this day. I’m 68 years old and when I married my wife in 1973, our wedding song was “ We’ve Only Just Begun “. There were so many wonderful female vocalists back then. I miss them but will never forget them or their song.

I was lonely and walking in cold rain on the streets of Suzhou 40 years ago, listening to the melody from heaven. Now I am an old man, tired and sitting in my chair, still listening to it in a quiet cabin in the highland of Arizona, under the shining moon smiling at me through the tall Ponderosa trees. Oh Lord, this is life. This is life.

@@louisvaccaro5865 Julie Covington was the first artist to record this song. She was less known for her records than as a star of the 1970s British tv series "Rock Follies." She recorded and released the song before the stage play, and it broke all of the rules for a song of this type. She was a virtual unknown by the mainstream, but the song rocketed to the top of worldwide charts in 1977. Therefore, it was an unknown song by an unknown singer from an unknown stage musical. The fact there was also no video clip means it should not have been a hit. It is worth a listen because Julie's version is hauntingly beautiful.

@@harrytroy685 That makes you 19 years old in 1970, making you too old to become a Carpenters fan. You were probably listening to a bunch of psychedelia and folk, Peter Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jefferson Airplane, Joni Mitchell, Judy Collins, Procol Harum. Did I hit any? A lot of guys eschew chick singers, but since you like Karen I'm guessing you might like Joni and Judy. I was just teasing you before, "Argentina" was never on the radio, so unless you were a Carpenters fan and had the album, yeah, you might have missed it. And it wasn't 1970, it was 1977s "Passage" album. By that time The Carpenters had lost their steam. Two lackluster albums (Now&Then, Horizon) had let the wind out of their sail, resulting in disappointing results for "A kind of hush," and it was over. "Passage" was an attempt to explore new territory but it also showed that Richard realized their radio days were over, even if he didn't admit it to himself. All that said, since you like Karen and you appear not to be a collector of their albums, I encourage you to listen in entirety to their two magical albums "Carpenters" and "A Song for You." Those are both blisteringly great albums.

Karen's mother was largely responsible for her lack of self-esteem and related insecurities. And when Karen eventually received public criticism about her physique/weight, it had an almost predictable affect on her self image. A very sad and difficult scenario. Yes Royce, human feeling and emotion was something that came easy for Karen. I heard an interview of a man that was in the music industry and he had worked with the Carpenters in the studio when Karen was only sixteen years old. The interviewer asked him if the emotional presentation that Karen always conveyed was something that she developed over time. He emphatically said NO, she was born with it. It was not something she learned.

The first time I met Karen Carpenter, was when her brother brought her along to a rehearsal at Disneyland where he was a minor music director/piano player at the time. I was one of the singers. She was entirely 'low profile', completely unassuming, and I had no idea she could sing at all (or play drums which is what she REALLY loved it turned out), until informed later, by one of our sound techs, who happened to have heard her when her brother asked her to do a stand in mic check in the recording studio, where her voice simply blew everyone away. As they say, the rest was history. Unfortunately, the rapid rise to stardom, combined with the vast crowds of industry 'orchard pigs' incessantly trying to carve out a 'piece' of her for themselves, took a heavy toll despite Richard doing his best to protect her (amazingly talented guy btw.) I'd be surprised if anyone who ever knew her, even those who only heard that magnificent voice solely through her recordings, did not physically cry upon her passing. In the words of space and time, she was a 'singularity.'
