This is the best management advice I have ever received. I inherited a team and boy oh boy, was it a rollercoaster. My challenges with them have stemmed first and foremost, from my inability to manage myself effectively. I have learnt that it starts with you. It really does.

Well said and so true. I'm not in a management position. But when my leadership just sweep everything under the rug or making feel like doesn't matter if I quit when I have very good work ethic hardly call in nor late and exceed their expectations I stopped connecting with them in all. They tell me I do excellent job that is not enough because I am not shown that I do exist. In my case I'm not the difference employee. It's the leadership not keeping their words. Why I just clock in and clock out and stopped connecting with my TL and the SUP. And yes I feel all they do is sugar coating.

This would work it you were to work with 5 year old kids, employees get paid to follow instructions and be competent to do the job, managers are there so this job or task gets done in timely and safe manner.

It is true that a lot of managers overreact and make the situation toxic. Therefore, not overreacting is a key strategy for managing others. Also, there is great power in being venerable. However, she needs to be a better story teller to bring the point home. It would be nice is she created pills that we could walk away with. Pills like, "You must connect before you correct." or "Be Nice but not soft like cooked rice." Also, incorporating some humor will help entertain and keep the audiences attention. I hope this feedback can be of some help.

I hate having senior employees who dont have skills but have EGOS larger than the room we are in. I can't stand people. They just want to avoid change at all costs. It's not a coincidence that my worst employees are older men. I'm a 40 year old woman who they just can't seem to listen to without disagreement all the damn time.

Well, this can actually be applied to any relationship in our life. If some outcome does not happen the way you want, what are you doing to help or cause it? How could you have handled it better or differently? If you keep doing the same thing, you will get the same result. You can't keep doing the same thing and expect different results. That is the definition of crazy.

This is a tough one. People can be annoying. Incompetent. Ridiculous. But as I told my own subscribers, you have to make an attempt not to hurt them. And usually that means even their feelings. You have to understand that many will have annoying traits that are not necessarily bullying traits but just what they are--annoying. And usually this type of behavior comes from their own internal unrest. As one of my Muay Thai coaches said: if a tiger attacks you in the jungle you must draw your knife and kill it. But if a little dog was nipping at your heels would you kick it to death? No, you move it gently out of the way. And that is the effort you have to make with people. Not everyone is strong, most aren't warriors. They aren't confident therefore have to be dealt with gently like the above analogy. And if you do that daily, you will find that it reflects back and gives you only more tranquility. Hope this helps someone out there---Charles

I have recently began managing a team, and all my dreams and ambitions about using emotional intelligence, being respectful, helpful and fair have been completely trampled on. My team are horrendous, disrespectful, unhelpful, push back on all work given to them, and I have tried EVERYTHING to be emotionally in-tune, listening to their needs, and giving them everything that I can to help them. However, they are a bunch of bullies. Middle aged men who were so obstructive, and unwilling to do any work, that two managers before me resigned. So my question is , how does one manage a bunch of bullies who have NO emotional intelligence or willingness to communicate effectively or accept any new work. We work on projects, so the nature of the work is to complete projects, however this bunch of men have formed an alliance and refuse to take any direction. What do I do??? Believe me, these man have ZERO emotional intelligence , I have tried to connect with them on that. My manager told me I need to get tough and stop trying to use empathy, emotional intelligence and vulnerability in my leadership.

Do you have the ability to write them up or fire anyone? Seems like they don’t deserve their jobs quite frankly and feel entitled to bully you. If they’re going to resent you anyway, give them a good reason to. Is there a ring leader? Perhaps an example needs to be made. You won’t be able to direct or manage them without appropriate power to reprimand with backup from senior leadership. If you feel bad doing any of this, it might be time to revisit your own boundaries.
@BellaZella3000
@BellaZella3000 4 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes there is a ring leader and I am now taking this forward through disciplinary process. It has not made me feel good about it though. But will have to let him go next year. Takes time to get the case together. It just goes to show, sometimes different styles of management are required and while I do wish leadership should be dynamic, inclusive, considerate of EQ, vulnerability etc, its not always possible to operate that way as some teams see these qualities in a manager as a green light to run a riot !

I can just use my sympathy. I can just about manage to get something done. Empathy is not my way. I can't deal in that way. I need other house members for that if it is a maid working in the house for example. I need to learn from such studied ways to be at a normal level with people. I am hoping to learn from these videos. Thanks so much.

People become difficult only because of the failures of management and executives. Organizations fail to cultivate collaborative, humane work environments where all people feel valued, heard, appreciated and accepted by other people. People become difficult because they are encountering frustration and resistance. Managers are paid big bucks, precisely because they are supposed to be endowed with extraordinary ability for managing successful organizations. However, on the contrary organizations contract, fail, disrupt, and under-perform because of the hubris, defects, and limitations of the clueless management. Then they lay off the employees, because it is so easy and convenient to blame the innocent who cannot defend themselves, and the dysfunctional organization pushes out the rare good managers.

David Jurist I think you may be missing the human aspects of management. You cannot control outside circumstances. My personal philosophy is that you don’t manage people, you manage operations.

Good tips. But sometimes there are life situations where this is not very applicable, for example violence or verbal abuse when we need to react immediately, and there is no time to sit and think. I am talking from a teacher's perspective

I am concerned that we constantly hear “Managers have to .......to keep their employees engaged and happy....etc” At what point does an employee hold themselves accountable for the work they produce (or don’t produce). All employees should be held accountable for the work they are being paid to perform, including managers and non-managers. I WOULD LOVE TO SEE A TED TALK ON EMPLOYEE ACCOUNTABILITY. Is there one?

There are many different types of management styles, and believe me, there is not a single "right" way to manage all. I went to school for management, I been a supervisor, manager, assistant manager, for different types of jobs and I still keep learning new ways to manage. You cannot expect every single employee or coworker to be effective with your management style, hell you might even have to use a different approach for every single person. But you always have to keep in mind that you as a supervisor or manager gets paid to make sure the people are doing their job. I get to know each of my employees on every team I have ever managed, I tried to learn something about them, kind of having a connection somehow, I listen. I have learn in the past few years to take and manage most criticism in a positive way, but I expect the same from everyone else. At the end of the day regardless of what management style I use with every individual, they all have it clear that I am; fair, respectful, professional, open to new ideas, and that I expect results and tasks getting done because that's why all of us get paid to do. So make sure everyone knows where you stand and what you expect, if it isn't clear you going to have a team that has no path to follow regarding your management style. Just my little 2 cents.
