BiG CONGRATS Shane for 3K. Its really big day for you and the channel and i want to say thank you for your work which is priceless. WoW whatca Dram for celebration?! Thanks for you open this sample and share your experience with us. Its really means something. I heard it is Single Cask and 100 bottles just been released. Just wandering how it keeps that strenght after 35years?! P.S. before your video i watched Matt from Whisky on the West Coast. He shared his expierence of Glen Mohr, 40yo G&M private collection of no more existed Distillery. Such a magic Tousday even just for watching. thanks again and lots of fun on this special day with this exeptional dram. Slàinte 🤩🥂🙋🏻♂️

Thank you my friend! I wish I could share that special dram with you all. It is odd how it has kept such a high strength for so long. I guess different climates (and different woods) all have an effect. Although you would think that high altitude would increase the losses wouldn't you? 🤔 Cheers and Slainte 🥃

Congratulations Shane! I've really come to enjoy the channel over the last year or two. What a unique dram to bring to us mere mortals, one could only wish to have a full bottle. Cheers, mate!

Ah.. a full bottle would be a dream! It's weird to think that it wasn't that many years ago that Karuizawa was kind of affordable. Prices have just shot up at an insane rate. You know what they say about hind sight 😒 Cheers! 🥃

Belated 3K, Shane. Well deserved. Needless to say I've never tried a Karuizawa (and more than likely never will, but so be it). Slàinte mhath

Wow lucky you! Interestling that damp and waxy note is what I consistently get on whiskies distiller in the olden years. Ps. hilarious bit of marketing there but don't give Diageo any ideas!!!😂
@WhiskyLock6 ай бұрын
It is funny how there are many common notes in those old and rare drams. And sad when you realise that certain flavours are no longer affordable and may never be again. I'm sure Diageo already have people coming up with dafter ideas than we can think of 😂 Cheers 🥃

Congrats for your 3K subs, Shane....👍 Great dram for the occasion indeed...Kanpaï ! 🥃 I haven't tried that one, but many others (42 if you wonder) & cherish (translate economize, rationate) the only "single-malt" Karuizawa I have (a 22 yo vintage 1986...I paid 121 € the 70 cl bottle but it was in...2008 !) & the official "Pur Malt" 12 yo supposed to be teaspooned with a Scottish one, yet still nice (if I may say, I love Scotch, mind you). Karuizawa can be quite versatile (and in my experience it can also be great when matured in ex-Bourbon casks) but indeed has some connections with Scottish style (I would def say "Highlands"), but sometimes doesn't come across as such & can be closer to more singular Japanese distilleries style, say Yoichi or Hanyu for instance). Hard to compare, but for me some Karuizawa I tried come across as superior to some Broras, but tbh the ratio of exceptional whiskies at Karuizawa seems so high that it would be hard to surpass it (even if I tried some weaker ones), but for me some Port Ellen & some Springbank can do it., and some less hyped/cult ones too.....Now, that said I've tried a lot of rare whiskies that were not that expensive back in the days, so my perspective is necessarily different...Now, regarding Karuizawa's brand name, I can tell you that it will be revived soon, elsewhere in Japan, and under new double ownership, but it will be different as, for instance, one of its old stills is now part of a small craft new Japanese distillery (Shizuoka).
@WhiskyLock6 ай бұрын
Hi Greg. It's crazy how Karuizawa (and others) were very affordable not that long ago. I agree that the best Karuizawas can be even better than Brora. Although really we're comparing two whiskies that are both in the top 1% 🙂 very interested to see what we get from the resurrected 'Karuizawa'. Of course it won't be the Karuizawa of old. Just like the new Brora won't be the Brora of old. All I ask is that it's affordable enough for us to actually try. Cheers 🥃
@welshtoro32566 ай бұрын
You don't think Port Ellen is hyped Greg? I mean, I used to drink it when it was just Port Ellen and no hype at all. It was closed in preference to Caol Ila. It's hyped alright and so is Springbank.
@GregsWhiskyGuide6 ай бұрын
Hi @@welshtoro3256 like you said, most of the people today don't have the opportunities we both had in the past...so yeah today it is hype ok but i don't have this experience...I thought you'll understand that...Cheers !
@GregsWhiskyGuide6 ай бұрын
PS double checking my comment, in fact i said "Port Ellen, Springbank AND some less hyped ones" so i dont see where you found that wrong interpretation you had...

When I saw the still, I assumed you had a full bottle and I was wondering why doesn't he just sell it and retire to the Côte d'Azur 😊? Lovely video. Now back to real life 😅

😂 I feel like most people who buy a full bottle of Karuizawa probably live in Cote d'Azure or Monaco already 😬 Cheers and back to real life indeed! 🥃

Really good to see you breaking out the good stuff. Congrats on 3k.. I think 2024 will be the year of quality over quantity for me.. I used to be a Supermaket blend guy , but even now some of those are unsuitable for even mixing. I think the whiskey industry needs to get their act together to keep the regular high street punters onside . I just bought a Grouse over xmas and it was whiskey flavored vodka , Ballantines still seems the best of the bunch , Grants is disgusting, WM is fine apart from the shedloads of color and artificial sweetness but its drinkable straight as is Teachers. I have found much more value in Bourbon recently . Old Forester 86 is great and would love to see a review on it. As for Japanese whiskey Its a loaded topic, I remember the days when I could get a Yamakazi 10 at Waitrose for £30 !!
@WhiskyLock6 ай бұрын
Ah the days of good value Japanese whisky. Long gone and I'm wondering if we'll ever see a return. I hope so but I'm not holding my breath. I don't think I've actually had Old Forester in many years. We just replaced our bottle of Wild Turkey 101 though. Excellent quality and value. I'll take a look at Old Forester after that. Cheers 🥃
