Featured is the chess game between Garry Kasparov and Vasyl Ivanchuk from the 1988 USSR Championship. Kasparov plays the English Opening where four knights are quick to arrive on their favorite squares. Once Ivanchuk places his pawn on e4, a big central battle ensues primarily over that square. Kasparov gambits a pawn and then undermines Ivanchuk’s control over e4, in large part to try to advance his central majority. Garry Kasparov’s play registered as 98% accurate in this 24-move encounter.

@MrZVQR

True, d4 doesn't lose the knight immediately. However, d4 also allows a nasty en passant discovered check exd3+, which will allow black to win another pawn and develop his pieces beautifully in a couple of moves, while white becomes tied down. The engine evaluates the position at about -5.5.

Apart from that one blunder you pointed out I can't really blame Ivanchuk for losing this one (I didn't spot the second blunder). Kasparov simply played pretty pretty pretty great. I wonder if Ivanchuk's nickname during school was Ivancheck?

Very nice game, was thinking f3 myself as well but maybe also because the d pawn in some variations might want to go to d4 anyways whereas with exd3 this would kind of cost 2 tempi, also after the exhange on d3 black's rook is on an open instead of a semi open file, not very significant but anyways that was my thought process, really like these kinds of pause moments on moves like these instead of only on winning moves, very instructive this way!

This is the 2nd type of smothered mate I am witnessing.What is actual meaning of smothered mate?
@dpayO2
@dpayO2 6 ай бұрын
Knight gives mate to a king that has no squares to move to, typically because the king is "smothered" by it's own pieces or the edge/corner of the board.
