I recently watched some skating from the last couple of years or so and while the "technical" content is beyond the capabilities of Katarina and the other top skaters of her day, there is no question that the artistry displayed here far exceeds what is on the ice today, at least for my money. The marriage of music and motion here is absolute perfection. All her jumps were perfectly timed to the music, in fact the entire routine was matched exquisitely to the music. I've seen this many times and I saw it when it actually happened on tv but I was still moved by it.

A rare ocaission where the choeography goes hand in hand with the music.

Katarina Witts "Carmen" is a really ice skating classic. I watched her home in East Germany 1988 as a child and was deep impresed of this old lady skating so well and get a medal for my homeland. And now its still one of the best performance on ice I ever seen.

What an artistic masterpiece.

Only someone with her breathtaking ability (and, let's be honest, visual appeal) could have accomplished this performance with such stunning aplomb. She stands out on her own as an incomparable icon - there will only ever be one Katerina Witt.

I remember watching her do this when I was 16. I was absolutely enthralled and inspired by her beauty and talent. Over 30 years later I am still.

You have to give the woman credit. She held it together under extreme pressure. Debbie's short program was flawless. It's ashame Debi couldn't hold it together. If she did she probably would have won but Katerina had the experience of an Olympic gold under her belt and I believe that's what helped her seal the deal.

I remember watching this live all those years ago. This was beyond a skating piece by Katarina, it was a true performance. She captured your attention within the first seconds (0.17) of the program and commanded it throughout. Because she wasn't just skating, she was living a character. It's simply a masterpiece and as beautiful today as it was 34 years ago. I'm watching the Olympics tonight and nobody can do what Katarina did no matter how technically skilled they are. Katarina was simply mesmerizing and pure elegance on ice!

Много раз катали фигуристы тему Кармен, но именно танец Катарины в далёком 1988 году в Калгари запомнился мне больше всего. Никто так проникновенно не станцевал на льду как она -красивую Кармен. i remember this performance like it was yesterday. her performance skills was so much better than anyone else. this performance don't forget from nobody. also, the things she did, haven't done before in ice, on the other hand so much have change since then, but in my opinion this is the best performance i have ever seen during these many years. i think no one could even necessarily try this kind of show. she was and - i think- still is the queen after all these years.

My husband was always very interested in Ms Witt’s ice dances. I wonder why?!?! Beautiful, talented woman. 😊

Upon just listening to Bizet's Carmen Suite, I was reminded of this gorgeous ice skating masterpiece viewed as a child amidst the excitement of the Winter Olympics. Seeing this extraordinary number after all these years has given a reminder of just how absolutely captivating Katarina Witt is during this entire spectacular routine. One simply cannot take one's eyes off of her. American commentators at that time mentioned the specific moments she would draw the audience in - that remains entirely changed. While the values have shifted in ice skating and emphasis on athleticism has become more pronounced by today's standards, artistry in its truest perfection is exemplified by this,, one of the greatest figure skating performances ever performed at the modern Olympic Games. Special recognition must also be given to Canadian Elizabeth Manley, whose Silver Medal winning performance brought this former underdog to well-deserved prominence with her high-spirited energetic routine that roused the entire homegrown crowd.

Funny side note: shortly after the Olympics, Katarina went on tour to the US and met Donald Trump. He gave her his phone number because he wanted to date her, but she threw it away. The next time they met, he said to her: „You are the first woman I gave my number who never called me!“- And she replied: „Well, someone has to be first“. (Its in her Autobiography, which was published in the 90s already)

I used to watch Katarina a lot back in the 80s and I had a crush on her back then. I still do today as recent pictures show that she is aging just fine. Interesting note on Katarina: she has never married and does not have any children. She is currently single and free! ;)
