This song comes from a strange zone where intense joy and sadness seem to co-exist inseparably. I believe that it is one of the greatest songs ever recorded.

Why do I well up and admire in equal measures every time I listen to this song. And I have been listening for a very long time.It gets right into your heart and your soul, it's eternal.

This song really points out the utter irrelevancy of the hit parade and the music industry in general. It is part of the legacy of mankind.

I saw them at Cafe Lena in the late 80's and it was unforgettable. Their singing was magical, so complex, yet so pure. Never heard anything quite like it before or since.

Kate did write this one. Anna never lived in New York, but I did with Kate. This is Kate.

It is amazing to listen to this version vs. that on the original Kate & Anna and then the ones on the Demo CD from "Tell My Sister". All so different, all so beautiful. The original demo has a brash Kate ready to take on the world. (and not a peep from Anna!) The released version (K & A first album) is much like this one, but with the "full orchestra background" somewhat muting the girls. This one here has to my mind a mellowed Kate and a luminous Anna. A life trajectory, ending with footage as desolate and eerily prescient as any that could have been imagined.

@brendanseanbarry Wow, you managed to capture the true essence of this lovely song, not an easy feat. Well done, well done, a lovely tribute to these amazing singers and songwriters. RIP Kate McGarrigle. Thank you for filling this tired old world with your human version of a songbird at the dawning.

how well i remember this song from the first album. this achingly sad song about missing home, is so beautiful. the album was not a big seller until rolling stone magazine voted it 'album of the year', the rest is history. and now the lovely kate has gone. i am so glad she lived to see her children become super stars. kate we will miss you so much.

Lena was that crochety, kindly older actress in Saratoga Springs, NY who owned the Caffe Lena. We made great cannoli in the kitchen and she LOVED to play Scrabble all day long. You would not believe our open mike nights - with Arlo Guthrie, Spalding Gray, Bob Dylan, Don McLean, Pete Seeger, Kate and Roma (later Anna), Loudon Wainwright, Utah Phillips, Rosalie Sorrells, etc...that was around 1971.

The song wasn't written "for" Lena but Kate's experiences in upper NY state, like mine, were awesome. It was so beautiful then. It was something to bow down to and then flow all the way to the Pacific over. One of my top favorite songs of all time for the last 50 years. Kate was strikingly beautiful in her 20s, sophisticated, damn! she could play Joseph Spence much better than I, more worldly, and she had a recent masters degree in mathematics. I remember being in awe of her - sitting across from her mid-afternoon at Lena's when the club was closed- both of us playing D-bass Bahamian tunes. She was a genius!

@grondinca1 Hey, I said nothing mean towards Rufus! I did not claim he's less talented than Anna or Kate. I only state my own idiosyncratic, subjective preference, is all. I make no broader judgment than that. If I say I like the taste of herring but not herring roe, I'm not claiming the roe 's less nutritious or a poorer quality food, I'm just stating a taste preference! It's just that I can't stomach Rufus's singing style or his sweeping , arching melodies (herring roe)!

As someone who knew Kate in her 20s, playing music with her, and then, about 4 years ago, going to a local concert with Rufus and Martha - Sorry but it was the difference between Night and Day. Kate and Anna were the pinnacles...sadly their progeny were ...rather...average...
@tucanoman12 жыл бұрын
Well I guess we could have predicted your opinions about Rufus given your nom-de-plume, beerstud. I'm sure he's losing sleep over that one . . .

Anna - shy, timid Montreal secretary...and an incredible song writer! No...I know Kate wrote this. I was there! But Kate sang Anna's songs in the Village, like with Roma Barron, before Anna, before Loudon... I was there...

My first intro to Anna was through Kate and Roma playing at Nobody's in the village in 1969. I wrote down every word I could remember and played their songs on my guitar. Does anybody have the full lyrics to "The Pronoun Song"?

I imagine that is as about as early as anyone could have heard Kate performing on a stage. My personal recollection of Kate and Anna is somewhere between 71 & 73. Only have a range since I know where I was working when I first heard them. Made me a die hard fan from day one.

Hermesacat that’s not really necessary to say. Even if you feel that why, why slag off her son like that? She had a tremendous influence on his writing. It’s not a competition, jeez. I discovered The McGarrigle Sisters through Rufus. I love the entire Wainwright/McGarrigle family catalog of music. Incredibly underrated songwriters, every one of them.

I do so agree. I love Kate and Anna's version and it's one of my favourite songs. However I really dislike Rufus Wainwright's voice. It is horrible and rasping. So sorry to have to say this😢

I bet Anna, who wrote some of the greatest songs, (even when it was 'Kate and Roma' before Anna) was so proud of her sister writing this incredible GEM! I took that journey with her...to Saratoga and Lena's in that same period...even jamming D base Bahamian with her at Lena's. She was amazing!
