Last August, tests revealed that Kate Cox, a mother of two in Texas, was pregnant with a child that had Trisomy 18, a genetic condition that causes severe developmental problems. According to Cox's doctors, the prognosis for the baby was death before or shortly after birth, and Cox's future fertility was at risk. She sued to receive an abortion under Texas law which bans the procedure in nearly all cases, but found herself caught in a legal battle with the state's attorney general. Correspondent Tracy Smith talks with Kate Cox, her husband Justin and with their lawyer, Molly Duane, about the court decisions that forced Cox to leave Texas for the medical procedure.

Except trisomy 18 is only potentially life threatening to the child. She should not have been in any more danger than any other child. Why would that child have been more of a danger to her than her other children? I feel it’s good she had to leave TX to have her child’s life ended. Children do live with that diagnosis.

@@rhodacrosby1749 Most children with Trisomy 18 do not live beyond the first two weeks of life, and fewer than 10% will live beyond the first year of life, typically due to significant heart or lung defects. A small number will reach their teen years, but they often require continuous care and extensive support for daily living. The oldest living person with that condition is Megan Hayes, a woman from Oklahoma who celebrated her 40th birthday in 2020 and she was born with a healthy heart which is a rarity for those with the condition.

Texas and other red states spent far too much time contriving punishments for abortions and far too little time looking at the medical circumstances that occur in problem pregnancies. These laws were written by people with law degrees without including input from people with medical degrees. Because of this, the "exceptions" which allow for an abortion have been so vaguely written that health care providers are forced to err on the side of caution and only give abortions in the most extreme circumstances. Women have been literally told that they aren't endangered enough from their failing pregnancies and should come back when their health worsens. I have no doubt that this will claim a woman's life one day, if it already hasn't. Texas and Idaho are currently losing doctors who specialize in reproductive services and are having difficulty replacing them. These doctors don't want to have to decide between their patients' health and their own self interests. Doctors who perform an abortion in Texas and Idaho can be heavily fined and charged with a felony that carries a long prison sentence. Several red states with strong anti-abortion laws are looking for ways to punish those women who seek out-of-state abortions and the doctors and facilities that provided the care. If they succeed then women in those states may find their health endangered by shortsighted laws in order to appease a god they may or may not believe in. This is why I take issue with conservatives who try to force their beliefs on others.

Sadly, it's not just doctors who work in abortion clinics who are affected. Doctors in hospitals are also held to the same ignorant, strict laws that have been passed in these states. ER doctors and obstetricians can also be charged. They can face life in prison for using their clinical judgement. Shoot! If you have a miscarriage at home, your first phone call better be to a lawyer! Look what they put Brittany Watts through in Ohio. She was charged with a fifth degree felony and faced a $2,500 fine plus a year in jail!!

Donald Trump said he was the one responsible for overthrowing Roe vs.Wade. Trump also said as President he would sign a law that abortion would be outlawed in every state in the United States. Republicans in Congress will follow suit. Joe Biden believes women have the right to choose what is best for their life and not have the government take their rights away. If you want to protect a women's freedom then vote blue for both the President as well as Congress.

If the kid did survive, she would have been on SSDI or something and the kid's behaviour would have drawn out the bullies and people who can't handle working with or around folks who have health problems. What is it moms tell their kids, I brought you into this world, I CAN TAKE YOU OUT? Food for thought. And those words have been yelled by Republican parents many times I guarantee it.🤥

They aren’t even pro-babies because they don’t care about what happens to that baby after they are born. They are pro-tradition because sometimes abortion is necessary to increase the chances that a baby survives. I’m referring to, if a mother has 3 or more babies at a time. The human body isn’t designed to hold 3+ babies in one pregnancy. So, aborting one or more babies, could greatly increase the chances of the other baby(s) to survive till full term.

So abortion in this case the needs of the mother outweigh to those of the child she is carrying. Terminating her pregnancy did end the life of that child but saved her future children and saved the child that was terminated from a painful death cause fetus do not feel pain until week 29. I hope all the prolifers see this as reason why medical abortion is healthcare.

This is obviously barbaric. Something you would expect to happen in El Salvador, not in the Western world. I take issue with Ms. Cox's framing this as 'I wanted an abortion because I did not want my baby to suffer and I wanted to preserve my fertility'. That may well be part of the story, but surely the most important reason for her wanting to terminate was self-preservation, and that's as legitimate a reason as it gets. Women should not feel the need to justify their decisions through the lens of the 'self-sacrificing mother' archetype. Cox should have felt comfortable saying: 'I prioritize me. I refuse to go through 3 more months of debilitating pregnancy, to then have a painful birth, for a sick baby that is going to cause my own health to deteriorate and is not going to make it past her first week of life. My body, my health and my well-being come first'.

There have been many stories about non-white pregnant women who couldn't afford to flee their states to receive care. One woman had just bus fare to get to an abortion clinic. They have been forced to deliver at term and watch their babies die.
