As a child I had absolutely no idea what was going on in this scene. The best I could come up with was that Jock and Trusty were trying to cheer her up. Then after rewatching this as an adult, I caught the word matrimony and all the dominos fell into place. The night Lady spent with Tramp, Tramps' status as a womanizer and the prospect of marriage, I finally figured out that Jock and Trusty were trying to protect Lady's' honor and I find that incredibly sweet.

Haha, I never realized Lady was probably pregnant at this point. I always thought as a little kid, her friends were offering to get her adopted at their home to help her move on, but now I realize as a parody of high society they're offering to be her husband to protect her from being a "fallen woman" in victorian society.

As soon as Lady asked who Trixie was and the thunder started clapping, that was a sign that spelt trouble for the Tramp. LOL!

If you guys don't understand: The night Tramp and Lady spent time was when they were [cough] doing it 👌👈 and when Lady went to the pound, she felt ashamed because her mate left (she thought) and when her friends saw that she was "in trouble" they wanted to propose to her to protect her (even though their just friends) and Lady kicked Tramp out because she found out that he's done that many times to other bitches

I love how lady strings together incoherently all the things they told her at the pound, its so perfect! Captures her anger and emotions perfectly. Also never realized the whole marriage thing until now, always thought they just went to comfort her after she went through such a scary experience at the pound

Her friends are offering to marry her so her children and her reputation could be protected in the kind of society they live in and so she wouldn’t have to do it alone

I can understand why she was so mad at him, she got pregnant and taken to the pound to which she found out that he had done this before with many other females. Her honour was both tarnished and ruined at the same time.

The fact they took this out the live action movie really upset me. These guys were true friends.

I missed Jock & Trusty. I had friends almost just like them when I was a kid. Respectful. Sure they may seem stuck-up to some, but they care.

I would like to debunk what a lot of you are saying; that tramp got Lady pregnant and that is why Jock and Trusty are proposing. If you look at the architecture and clothes in Lady and the Tramp it is easy to see that the film takes place around the time of the turn of the century. The turn of the century was a time when if a girl (in polite society) was out all night (or just at night) with gentlemen (even if nothing happened, or even if it was inevitable [ say they were caught in a storm]) she was automatically ruined. It didn't matter if nothing romantic happened, she was ruined. And going to jail would also most definitely ruin a girl. Even if she had done nothing wrong. Jock and Trusty would have felt the need to defend her honor even if nothing had happened. Also about the timing being right for the puppies; Lady and the Tramp were reunited the very same night as this scene takes place. They could have been "married" the next day and the timing would still be right for the puppies to have been a few weeks old at christmas time.

I love how lady literally finds her feet here making it clear that she doesn’t need jock and trusty to deal with tramp due to saying “that won’t be necessary thank you” confirming that she can handle this herself and handle it she did despite how heartbroken she was after Tramp left but she really told him and was like “look you thought you could play me and then instantly you abandoned me and didn’t even come looking for me because I was just another game to you like the rest of them I don’t need you to protect me if you go careless it ain’t my fault and I don’t care what happens to you so goodbye and take your worthless bone/gift with you and don’t let the fence hit you on your way out”

In a movie about dogs, Disney managed to fit in a lot more adult content than in most of the movies about humans. If you know the euphemisms, they were saying that Lady was pregnant and she wasn't "married," so one of the other dogs had to "marry" her so her reputation wasn't ruined. But to a kid, it just seems like they're saying "her condition" is being tied up in the dog house, and they're offering for one of their families to take her in, where she'll be treated better as a pet.

People are saying Lady was pregnant at this point, I don't think so? Maybe I'm over-analyzing this, but here are my reasons why:: - This scene took place in April of that year. Jim Dear and Darling's baby was still a newborn, and if you remember, there is a scene where they cross the calendar as April for the baby to be born earlier in the movie. It is also implied to be April, because in the spaghetti scene, the Italian restaurant owner says "Somebody making the April fool?" when tramp first scratched the door. The ending scene with lady's puppies took place in December. the puppies still looked relatively young at that point. Dogs are usually only pregnant for a few months, so isn't April-December very long? - Other than that, I think that in this scene, Jock and Trusty just did this for lady, because from the dogs' POV, no one even knew if Jim Dear and Darling would come back. They wanted her to be able to live at their house. And maybe they just wanted to attempt to help her move on. Also, her being with Tramp like that (a stray dog) in general would probably also ruin her reputation. - She had, quite literally, only known Tramp for a day at that point. Even if she was pregnant, I don't think herself or the other dogs would have noticed yet at that point. that's just my opinion though. if you want to believe the other way, that's fine.

I always thought, as a kid, that they considered marrying her to keep her from being lonely after her heartbreak. Seeing it again through adult lenses makes it so much better! I love LOVE Jock and Trusty, they're such sweet friends to her. I've always had a soft spot for this movie's sequel (it was one of the ones I watched the most then) but I do wish it had kept the theme of edwardian era and the high society class vs the working class details instead of focusing on pets vs strays... it was clearly just a metaphor for the story they were trying to tell here in the original.

I like the way Tramp crawls up to Lady on his tummy that is something real dogs do when trying to appease their owner if they are cross with them.

I kinda wanna see like a human version of this movie cause I think it would be pretty interesting.

Personally, this scene is hard for me to watch which is why I was glad they reconciled with each other in the ending. Plus, I had a hard time trying to warm up to Jock and Trusty, until they admitted that they misjudged Tramp.

As many others who watched this movie in their youth, this scene confused me. Though, I thought it was more the pair was coming onto Lady despite the troubles she was having. I love Jock, but I definitely was creeped out by them in this scene. Watching it now with context of being an adult and knowing about that time, I'm glad they really only turned out to be trying to be good friends. They didn't even bat an eye at her rejection of their offer, either.

I never knew when I was a kid on why they were proposing. I thought it was because of her experience in the pound and they just wanted to give her a nice home. But after knowing that Tramp got her pregnant and since everyone knew he wasnt the type to settle down they propose to her. See this Rat in the movie plays a big part, yeah Tramp got sent to the pound but after Lady told him to get lost, Tramp heard her barking viciously and knew something was wrong and rushed back to her, he wouldn't have done that with anyone else and after saving the baby from the rat Jock and Trusty saw what a good guy (well dog in this case) he was they went to go save him from most likely being put down and just ended up actually being married to Lady after knowing she was pregnant since even they saw that he loved her and wanted to settle down with her. Even during this scene when they dont think that, that's pretty much what he wanted. They were just thinking "oh hes just going to leave you when another pretty dog comes along" but in his case hes more "I love you and I actually want to make it work, so here a bone for you try to accept my apology" but yeah this Rat changed everybody's look on Tramp and saw he was serious about Lady and her family But I do wonder how Jock and Trusty knew she was pregnant in the first place if she and Tramp didnt know at the time, or maybe she did but that still makes me wonder how Jock and Trusty found out

I’m actually glad that tramp did come back to take care of the rat later on in this scene.Aunt Sarah was very mean to both Lady and Tramp,let alone probably all dogs,but if she listened to what lady was trying to tell her ,when she was barking at the rat,then the rat would probably already be dead by the time tramp returned and the baby would be ok.

As much as I consider and stand by my word that Tramp is a complete jerk, I do always feel sorry for both Lady and himself. When Lady lost her temper, he looked so sad. It's more than clear that him and Peggy had a case, and still think it true to this day. I also think this is not the first time this happens. All the other dogs he had dated must had been caught and sent to the pound because he kept messing around. He must have tried to stay loyal and loving so many times and all times something ended bad, he got a bad reputation. Tramp is sad because it's happening again and he knows he's the one to blame, even if he does try to apologize, sorry doesn't undo what happened, so he just leaves as he knows she'd be better without him. Also, Jock and Trusty offering to protect and care for Lady was adorable!

That moment when Lady stook her head out and looked so hurt by what she said to Tramp, you could tell she was not very proud of telling him off when she didn't even give him a chance to explain. But what would've happened if Lady accepted Tramp's proposal that night and then being inevitably dumped by him and forced to raise pups from a deadbeat father and enduring scorn from society while Tramp would do it all over again with the next one. Honestly, Tramp needed a reality check, but this time he didn't dump the girl, the girl dumped him, and now he is broken and ashamed by how much pain and humiliation he put on Lady and the others he screwed with.

Oh shit! I am amazed I never picked up on this proposal. And the comments on here are amazing. If the live action movie doesn't have the dogs being this honorable then its screwed up.

I don't blame Lady for being upset here. While I do feel sorry for both her and Tramp, that mongrel was a complete jerk for not paying close attention when she was falsely taken to the pound. 2:25 - The ultimate putdown.

Watching this scene again and thinking about how Lady and Tramp spent the night together and the time between that and when the puppies were born would be enough time for a dog to be pregnant (yes, I googled dog pregnancy because of this movie), you realize that Tramp got Lady pregnant and Jock and Trusty knew that Tramp likely would not "marry" her (as legal as dog marriage can get). So, when it boils down to it, Lady was "in trouble" and Jock and Trusty were willing to marry her and protect her. If these two guy don't deserve friends of the year award, I don't know who does ❤️

They were going to take her into their home to protect her Victorian honor. Should she have puppies, they would claim them and be the father. They even ask her to choose which she would prefer!! These guys might be the most heroic and chivalrous men in any Disney movie.

Jock and Trusty are the most kind and loyal friends a Disney main character could have.

It's funny how as an adult, you notice more things in this scene than you could as a kid. Now I see what Jock and Trusty were doing--proposing to Lady. Since she'd been in "jail", and Tramp had supposedly ditched her, and Aunt Sarah had treated her so poorly, they wanted to get her into a new home with good, loving owners. And now I fully understand why they were all so angry with Tramp--on top of causing Lady to get thrown in "jail", he once was a womanizer! So they all thought he regarded Lady as just another girlfriend (which wasn't true), on top of Jock and Trusty having a prejudice against "mongrels". Honestly, as much as I feel bad for Tramp, he deserved the reality check. He couldn't sweep his past under the rug, and he needed to see that his hell-raising days were over if he wanted to keep Lady. And while he did save her life, until he killed the rat, he hadn't done much to prove his love for Lady, and so he had yet to earn Jock and Trusty's respect.

The way he just walks in as if nothing happened.... In a way, he deserved what he got. But at the same time, I feel kinda sorry for him..the sad look on his face as he leaves and goes back out the fence.
