Awesome! I am working my way up to a sump. One day I will probably have one... I have experience with an FX6 Canister Filter because I used to have one on a 125-gallon aquarium. It was great meeting you and taking a picture with you at Aquashella Dallas Saturday, May 20!! You'll probably remember us now when I say: My dad and I are New Yorkers too just like you. I have African Clawed Frogs and they are doing good. I love breeding cichlids!

I have been out of the hobby since I was around 12. At 54, I just jumped back in with my wife, going with Mbuna. After a lot of research, I decided to forego canisters on my 100 gallon and build my own sump. I purchased two 40 breeders from Petco, one as the sump, the other I sacrificed for glass to be used to separate the sump chambers (FYI, the bottom panel on the Aqueon 40 breeder I used for chamber glass is tempered...ask me how I know. All other panels were used and were not tempered). A lot of work and learning, but I'm thrilled with the results. My sump goes like this: water return chamber into two 4"/14" socks>mechanical filtration chamber (FilterFirst)>moving bed chamber containing ~70% K2 and two air pump outlets>secondary mechanical (FilterFirst)/chemical filtration (purigen and Chemi Pure Blue) chamber>UV filter/return pump chamber. I have to say, I'm thrilled with the performance. Water is crystal clear and water testing is beyond my expectations. 35 Mbuna and 7 Petricola, and I'm testing Nitrate at a level where I only have to water change every 3-4 weeks at 40PPM. I'm thrilled with the performance, considering the sump was very inexpensive to build compared to all of the prebuilt online options I could find. I change my two socks every 3-4 days, dump my Aquatic Experts FilterFirst pads in the mechanical chambers once they demonstrate reduced water flow (~7 days) and my chemical filtration gets changed as needed (months). I love returning to this hobby, and keeping my fish happy and healthy! Keep up the good work!

I installed the Seamless sump on my new 240g from Custom Aquariums a month ago and love it. I plumbed in a water line that goes through a carbon filter and brings in one gallon of chlorine free water each hour. I also drilled the reservoir tub and added a bulkhead and a drain so it drains out excess water. No water changes!

Water is crystal clear due to your help in many videos. The wave maker is a GEM in this hobby extremely underrated and adds so much extra filtration. My fish love it. One of the best forms of filtration when I've used a sump has been a moving bed. Large amounts of k1 type media does make some noise which can be somewhat dampened but in terms of performance, it makes such a huge difference to the biological filtration of a large tank.

I felt the same way about sumps for a long time! And it is a lot of upfront work. but once its in there's very little to do to maintain it. Clean the socks every few days and replace chemical media monthly, which is super easy to do since its an open system. But I totally get where you're coming from. I've been doing this for a while and only now finally felt like I was ready for it lol But I'm glad I pushed myself to expand and try something new...AND get this information out to everyone for whenever they might be ready 😊😊😊 It'll be here for you when you are! 💪

Good job man, congrats on the new tank. I have learned a lot from you about hold and keep african cichlids. Regardless of the sump, i wasn't a big fan of the set up, since i am used to the return pumps set up in last, running normal from what I could see on this video the water rarely goes to the refugium. Also, it may help in case you are having drain noise, change those pips for hard ones, and use valves to control the overflow. But from this video, I couldn't listen to the noise, so I'm just leaving a tip in case there are. I am looking forward to updates 😉 Keep up the good work!!

The way I always did my sump fill was to fill the tank until it started to drain into the sump & then stop. Once it broke the siphon, I'd fill the sump to about 2" from it overflowing. That sets the power out level of the whole system. Then turn on the return pump(s) & once it stabilizes, you mark that as your running level. As long as you are never OVER that level, the system will never flood in a power outage. If you have an ATO, this is the level it should be set at to maintain.
@KaveManAquatics

It looks awesome, and I'm sure you will enjoy the new set up. I'll admit I'm relatively new to the hobby, so forgive my ignorance. With the tight fit under the stand, do you not need to get into the sump system after installation? There doesn't look like much room to get those media bags out for any future cleaning or removing any tubs for cleaning/maintenance. How is this accomplished or does it never need to be done?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
It is a tight fit but just as I got the bags in I can get them out. With that being said though, I dont plan on ever needing to remove the media bags. Even if they're dirty that just means more beneficial bacteria 😊 Bio-media is something you want to interact with as little as possible in your tank 💪

I lost my last comment to edit. So if there is a power out, the water will continue to syphon untill the water is below the outlet on the tank. In which case it would be best to build a catch can under the tank that can accommodate the over flow extra water level from the first tub where the pump sits. So it doesnt flow onto the floor.

From someone that knows nothing about this type of system, how would you clean those last 2 chambers if they're glued together? I'd think some debris is going to make its way in there because it always seems to make it through several layers of filter in a cannister. Also, can you remove the hoses or elbows from the attachment point on the tank if something happens? Does it still unscrew once you get glue in there?

There doesn't look to be much working room under the tank. How will you maintain the bag filters and matrix if the chamber is full etc?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
Remove the socks is easy enough. Don’t ever really need to “maintain” the bio media. That’s going to stay in there forever lol Might give them a rinse once a year or so….we shall see 😁

Are you not suppose to let the cement dry before adding water?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
The cement drys almost instantly! It's not like silicone. 😊

You only tested for power failure. What if the overflow stops and pumps drains the sump for water? Also, just put glass or something like it, on top of the sump, there is made room for it. Then there is almost no evaporation. Looks good.
@KaveManAquatics

It has glass tops, I think I showed them in the tank setup video before this one. If the tank isn’t overflowing then the sump will eventually run dry and pumps won’t have water to pump into it. Also, having multiple overflows will prevent this from happening if one gets clogged for some reason.

How are you ever going to get the last 2 parts of the sump out of there if needed if you glued them together at the black pipes?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
Well 1, I dont ever plan to have the need to remove it. If the tank needs to be moved, I would just drain the sump and move the stand with it in there. 2, I'm sure if I really needed to I can heat up those connections to remove the cement glue and remove them 😊

Hey, I was just wondering if you had heard anything about the FWC's proposed whitelist down here in Florida? While I believe it's implementation has been postponed for further analysis, I think it is important to get the word out about what they were trying to do as it would impact the hobby on a national level. I haven't seen any of the bigger fish keeping channels mention this issue and was hoping you would. This proposed whitelist could decimate fish farms here in Florida and make the acquisition of fish on a national level far more difficult, expensive and eliminate legally keeping a large number of species. As I said, the FWC has put this on the back burner for the moment to do further analysis as they were unaware of the amount of species involved, (about 30,000 of which they were aware of 2 to 3 thousand), but this still has the potential to seriously affect our pets in the future of it isn't completely shot down. Hope to hear you speak about this as it is a serious threat to our hobby/lifestyle. Keep up the great work.

Seems pretty straight forward except the refugium. Not really understanding how water flows back into the sump? Obviously water will come in through the black pipe, but from there how does it get back to the system?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
Great question! The T-Valve has 2 output drip lines. 1 drips into the Evap reservoir and the other drips into the Refugium. So the pump chamber is always continuously dripping into both reservoirs 😁

Just curious. If the only intakes are strainers at the top, and not intake tubes reaching down, how are you going to get the substrate clean with wavemakers?
@KaveManAquatics
@KaveManAquatics Жыл бұрын
Wavemakers may not do as good of a job, but they’ll still help. The goal is to get them to keep detritus moving and not trapped somewhere on the substrate. If I can get that setup properly, the floating debris will find the overflows 😁
