Making sure that your air filter is clean is one of the easiest DIY tasks any motorcycle owner can perform. The point of this is to make sure that the air box and filter are clean so your engine can breathe. I do something a bit off the main track here and clean and re-use the stock air filter (gasp). This process may get some folks real excited. This filter is high quality and is not the flimsy paper filters that you may be used to. Based on that, and the fact that it was undamaged, I feel fine about re-using it. This time. I doubt I would clean and re-use the filter more than once, but all of that would depend on the condition of the filter. Use common sense and if in doubt, throw it out.

For those of you griping about Muddy Fences cleaning his filter. I believe the filter is a K&N filter and not the factory stock filter. The K&N filter is designed to be washed and reused. Hence the cleaning kit before actual washing. For those of you who think filters are cheap. The stock filter for this bike is currently selling for about $32.00 USD! So if you want to go the "cheap" route go ahead and shuck out $32.00 every time you need a filter! Or for $54.00 you can buy the K&N filter and clean it and it should last a long time!.

For anybody who didn't get an owner's manual with their used bike, you can usually find one in .pdf format by doing a Google search. Found one for my Vulcan using this method.

I just cleaned my air filter on my Kawasaki Vulcan 900. Great video. Hey, I noticed an oil leak outside my filter cover dripping onto the crankcase. Is that a seal issue or something else? I know there are two seals, I did not replace them. I tightened the bolts to spec (cover bolts 43in-lbs). Thanks for any info in advance! 🙂

It sounds like a bad seal to me. It could also be the seal is pinched or misaligned in the groove. Best of luck.

Muddy Fences, what’s your take on swingarm greasing? The manual says to do it at 15K miles, but it’s a big job & lots of people claim it’s unnecessary. Thanks for your great videos!

How many miles before you recommend cleaning/replacing the air filter ?
@muddyfences5559
@muddyfences5559 5 жыл бұрын
I would clean, or replace the air filter at every oil change. The manual indicates that the oil should be changed every year, or every 3,000 miles (whichever comes first). For me, I clean the filter, and change the oil every year.

Those are socket head bolts, where the bolt plays the role of the socket. They can be called Allen key bolts, hex key bolts or Allen head bolts. Hex head bolts are standard type bolts. You might mention the size tool needed.Also you can't really clean those filters as the tiniest particles are embedded into the fibers and pretty well locked in. This is why they are designed to be replaced. The old oil bath filters, or the K&N filters rely on an oily surface to catch and stick to the particles and they can be cleaned.

I talked to my Kawasaki trader and he is no sell on anything that is not needed,he does not recommend trying to clean or wash the filter because when doing so you destroy the fibers that protect the engine,but if you skier with a cheap air filter maybe you should take the bus,you should skim with the servics too,you should not let the stingy goat deceive the wisdom

My or others' knowledge of engines you know nothing about,personally think to partially fool people who you say do not have knowledge of how an engine works,moreover, I do not think a Kawasaki trader gets particularly rich in is sell such an important thing as oil and air filter,why not try to clean the engine oil in a coffee filter might work,or cut new pattern in the worn out tire ,washing a paper filter is not something you should recommend ask which professional is involved in engines if it is.Unfortunately for many easily deceived people in our master's paddock who are trying to save a few bucks in the wrong end.

Don't ever do this. That's a factory paper filter not meant to be wet. Your just asking for problems down the road. Spend the $15 for a new filter.
@muddyfences5559
@muddyfences5559 5 жыл бұрын
I don't totally disagree with some of your comment, but do you really trust a $15.00 filter? They are not all created equally. I just recently looked at the filter and it shows no signs of breaking down, and the bike continues to run like a champ. I will be replacing it next time though. Take care.
