I totally get the trajectory of your journey. I used fountain pens--cheapo student Sheaffers--back in the day, and picked the "hobby" back up about ten years ago. I lusted after grail pens I could not afford or justify, and then realized, pen--at least for me--are tools! It's gotten kinda crazy, and I dropped out of some groups when I saw them devolving into acquisition contests and matchy-match fashion bragging (that is to my mind really odd). I have been thinking about getting a Sport to toss into my EDC journal, and was concerned about the performance of the broader nibs, so this video was super timely. Thank you!

Good one. No matter where you are in your fountain pen hobby/acquisition, there will always be a time and place for a pocket pen, such as Kaweco. You simply can’t deny its utility, versatility and retro appeal. I have Classic Sports and I enjoy writing and sketching with them a lot. Thanks!

In nib comparisons I like to see the same ink used in them all. That way we can see where size makes a difference in legibility and shading. Always good to see one done regardless, so, well done.

My Kaweco EF is new. So far the only ink I’ve used in it is the cartridge that came with it. It writes very, very fine. Like a 0.25. Maybe even finer. I’m very surprised, I was expecting it to write much less fine than the 2 Japanese pens I have. I also like the way it writes better on tootheir paper.

I have had a similar experience. My Kaweco EF writes like a .38 Uniball Signo DX. On the other hand my Kaweco F almost writes like a .7 Pilot V7. I am really surprised at how bold the line is on the F. I wonder if the Blue vs. Black Kaweco ink makes a difference.

A couple years late to the party here, but I own two fine-nibbed Kaweco Sports in Iridescent Pearl and Fine Lime. They are my note-taking pens, grading pens, journaling pens, and everything else pens. They are adorable but not so valuable that I am scared to use them often like my Pro Gear Slim or VP Decimo. After watching this video, I want to own them in all the nib sizes. Now to figure out which colors I want... 😅

Talk about similar patterns! I too started with the inexpensive and moved up the fountain pen ladder, or down the rabbit hole depending on your preference. I love the Urushi and Maki-e pens from Namiki/Pilot, but they are mostly art to me, I find that I can really enjoy fountain pens under $50 quite a bit and funny enough bought 3 Kaweco pens earlier today. I just happened onto your video reading more about my pen purchases. For me, these will be pens used at work and I will certainly use them moving about town. I really loved your video and subscribed based on what I viewed. Great job.

I held off on this pen for awhile because I prefer standard converters, but eventually I caved and purchased the Mint Skyline Sport with a JoWo EF nib. It was love at first write! It's such a great pen! It's THE only fountain pen I take out and about with me, tucked into my pocket Traveler's Notebook. I've been seriously considering getting another with a different nib size; this video is helpful.

I bought a Kaweco Sport with a Fine nib and inked it up with Kaweco cartridges and I liked it, but I didn't love it (I think I'm more of a broad nib person although I don't yet own a B). Then I inked it up with Herbin Poussiere de Lune, and honestly it made a big difference for me! The ink flows out much more freely and it feels smoother to write with now. I really want to try the broader nibs of the Sport though. I love the colors you chose!

What an interesting story about “returning” to what one perceived as “junior” fountain pens 😀 It has been the other way around for me. After just over two years of using and collecting fountain pens, I finally bought my first Kaweco, which has been on my wish list for forever. Perhaps becuase of that, my price tolerance slowly went up from there. All of my Kaweco are M nibs for the moment and I love them. Now thinking of getting an F and feel very nervous about it. Have been using only Kaweco’s ink cartridges for now. My biggest fear is scratchiness. My experience with M nibs of all kinds have been consistent. But not so much with F. There is almost no where here to get help with nibs so I tend to be stuck with them. This has been helpful. Thank you!

I have 3 Sports. My first is an AL-Sport in stonewashed black. Love the pen, but the fine nib was ridiculously dry. Swapped in a 1.1 stub and like it much better. I have one in Fox (orange) and Cognac Brown (from Galen Leather). Both are mediums and I need to use a very wet ink to keep me happy with the nibs. Love the pens, though.

Hi, fellow Canadian here. I was so excited to watch this vid. I also LOVE the Kaweco Sport, and have 2 and I also have 4 Kaweco Aluminum, and 2 mechanical pencils (I LOVE the design and engineering of them all). Yes, I agree in the beginning times I went for these and the Lamy, around $25-30, that seemed about right at the time and then I went to $100 and then so on and so forth...but there are reasons to keep these amazing pocket pens around and inked up. I want to ask you though, did you ever experience any scratchiness with the K nibs? I have had to replace more than 50% of my nibs for that reason (the vendors have been really good about it). Do you recommend tuning them yourself or exchanging them? For my Sports I generally use cartridges, but for the Aluminums I use the Kaweco converters. Do you use the converters? I would love to see a vid on that if you do. Thanks and keep them coming as I like seeing all the inks you use. I have a drawer full but hardly ever have even one bottle the same as you! c

I’ve been surprised, the Kaweco Sport and Lamy Safari are great pens, maybe even better than most because you can still appreciate them even if you own expensive ones.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 3 жыл бұрын
Well, the Kaweco is a good pen. The Safari is a joke. By profit margin, it's far and away the most overpriced pen on the market, and is made of the cheapest material outside of China. In fact, most Chinese pens use much better materials, and, on average, have much better nibs. The Safari costs such an outrageous, almost criminal amount for what it is because when it came out there was almost no competition. It was well before the current fountain pen craze, and they could charge what they wished. Many jumped on the Lamy bandwagon because there was no other wagon in sight, and the rest is history. Pure hype make people pay several times as much for these pens as comparable pens cost. Worse are the Safari "Special Editions". These generally mean Lamy adds two cents worth of dye in a new color to five cents of cheap plastic, and charges thirty dollars extra for doing so. For the price they charge, for the immense profit margin they receive, Lamy nibs should be infinitely better than they are. The barrels should also be stronger. But I've received more requests to work on Lamy nibs than on any non-Chinese pen on the market. For that matter, more than on Jinhao, since Jinhao got its act together where nibs are concerned.

I have all nibsizes, including the calligraphy nibs and the one that lays down a double line. I do not have that many Kaweco fountainpens though, because you can switch nibs. And not so long ago I had the opportunity to buy a gold BB nib for a reasonable price. That one even has a bit of line variation. I positively love that nib.
@jamesaritchie1
@jamesaritchie1 3 жыл бұрын
Be careful with that nib. The number one cause of damage I've seen to nibs comes from users trying to get line variation from non-flex gold nibs. Considerably more often than I see damage from dropped pens. You damage the nib just a little bit each time you do this. Even if you never spring the nib, you'll know instantly if that happens, damage is still being done. Eventually, the nib will get wetter and wetter, and/or it will start having hard starts, or it will start skipping, etc. Or you may just realize the pen doesn't write as well as it used to write. You probably won't have a clue why this is happening. The cause is trying to get line variation from a non-flex nib. Maybe you won't use this pen and nib enough for this to matter, but if you do use it on a daily basis because you love it, then don't try to get line variation. A steel nib can usually take minor line variation without much damage. Not a gold nib. Done too often and too long, a non-flex gold nib will cause problems.

I have them in F, M and the calligraphy set. I prefer the F, it has the best writing experience although it depends heavily on which ink I use, the wider nibs from the calligraphy set (1.9 and 2.3 mm) require a wet ink to work properly.

Hi, I have a few of these (5) and enjoy them as everyday, anyplace writers. I have found the nibs a bit inconsistent though. For example I have a fine that is finer then my extra fine and two mediums where one is more like a broad. Only had one bad nib which I ground to a stub. Can I ask what the Lamy ink was please? You said aquamarine but I’ve never heard of it here in the UK. Before you named it I was thinking tourmaline 🤔 Great vid, many thanks.

The previous comments confirm my belief that Kaweco nibs are inconsistent in width and feel, at least the cheaper plastic models. I have 4 of them: the two with medium nibs are very nice, but the fine was too dry and thin like an extra fine and the broad nib has hard starts too often. Lovely pens but you have to rely on the mood of Mr. Fritz to get a nice nib (I mean if he had a quarrel with his wife last night you'll get a bad nib or if they did get along nicely you'll get a nice nib, you get what I mean)

I currently have eight Kaweco Sport pens, and am about to get an ninth. Goldspot pens has just announced an exclusive version, that I just have got to have (it has a major drool/cool factor IMHO). When I started collecting fountain pens I ignored Kaweco Sport pens as well as all pocket pens. Then I realized that my collection was all "full-bodied" pens which made transporting them a pain. So, I began collecting Kaweco Sport pens with medium nibs. My eight Kaweco Sport pens are of eight different colors and they are inked with an ink matching the color of the pen. Yes, my journals are in many colors. I find it nice to pick up their purple version (I call mine "Merlot") and write with Noodler's Black Swan in Australian Roses, or their red pen (which I call Cadmium, as it is a cadmium red pen) and write with Diamine's Poppy Red. So now the Kaweco Sport pens travel and the rest of my pens stay at home. You wish to "test drive" with my Platinum 3776 Century in Chartres Blue? Then you will be in my home sipping tea as well as writing with a gorgeous pen, which is currently inked with a Venetian Red ink. Life is good in the fountain pen world!

Early this year, I did just the opposite. I sold all of my gold nib pens, and I had a LOT of them. I've now bought half a handful; of new, and very expensive, gold nibs, but I have never snubbed "entry level" pens. Not all entry level pens are created equal, of course. Some are horrible, but some are very, very good. Other than the sheer beauty of a very expensive pen, other than the talent and skill that went into creating it, I see little advantage in using such a pen as a sheer writer. Only the tipping material touches the paper, so a steel nib should be every bit as buttery smooth as a gold nib. In fact, somewhere around eighty percent of gold nibs are way over polished. Buttery smooth, yes. Long lasting, no. Like all other businesses, fountain pen companies give customers what they want, even when it's something that is not good. Few people these days use a single fountain pen enough to realize how quickly one of these over polished nibs will wear out, but those of us who do use a single pen every day for long writing sessions wish more companies would stoop doing something like this just because only a relative few people will suffer from it.
