I started using fountain pens just because I wanted to take hand written notes without my hand cramping up (as it does when I use ballpoint pens). I had no idea what I was in for when I ordered my first Pilot Varsity, I thought it was just going to be like any other pen... boy was I wrong! I ended up falling in love with fountain pens and, much to my surprise, I ended up falling in love with writing. Before I knew it I was journaling every single day and finding any excuse I could just to write! I was suddenly able to confront a ton of unresolved things from my childhood/youth through my journals, it's really special and quite profound just how much writing something out can give you a new perspective on things. By way of journaling, I was then re-introduced to cursive which was something I thought I had left behind in elementary school. I'm not sure that there are words to even describe how much fountain pens have impacted my life, but I do know that I'll be holding on to them for the rest of my life. I've been slowly building a pen and ink collection since that first Varsity last year and I'm so excited to see what else ends up it!

Fountain pens have made me realize how much I would spend on disposable ballpoint pens and how they would end up in a landfill. A fountain pen has helped me to improve my penmanship and has given me the opportunity to protect and preserve the analog soul found in each of us because every observation or emotion is translated differently due to a nib size and ink color. I have learned to be more cognizant of my words and it is amazing to realize that people in the fountain pen community are kind and caring. Thank you for your video presentation. Take care.

I think my world has greatly expanded during this pandemic because of fountain pens. I’ve learned tons of new knowledge, found new You Tube channels (like yours), and really upped my journaling practice to new heights - pens, nibs, inks, paper. Just WOW!

Fountain pens have given me a new interest in COLOR. Colors I never imagined I would like are now some of my favorites: orange, brown, purple… even red. And though I have a VERY long way to go, I know fountain pens are improving my penmanship.

I’ve been writing with fountain pens since childhood. My first pen was an old Parker that my uncle gave me. I was in first grade. All of my family members were letter writers. I naturally followed suit. I turn 70 next week and there are three fountain pens on my desk - all inked up and ready to write. Fountain pens didn’t change my life. They’ve been my life. For me pens are just the natural progression to my love for writing and stationery. They are a symbol of my commitment, from studying to art to learning new languages. I feel like the act of picking a pen, taking good care of it and using it all your life sends a clear message in this hyper consumistic era. As an artist, I always had a interest for drawing and writing utensils. By the time passes, my interest got narrowed down when I discovered pens. They were practical but felt soulless to me and I discovered fountain pens thanks to your channel and fell love with them immediately. It felt like each of them had their own personality and unique feeling unlike other pens and these concepts gave me the motivation to create and write more. My husband bought me my first fountain pen last year. Now both of us are writing everyday, experimenting with different ink. I love the positive impact it's had for both of us. It's changed the way we write. Normal ball point pens just don't do it for us anymore. Fountain pens are amazing and I couldn't live without my small collection now.

I’ve been writing, both journaling and story writing for years. Always by hand as I like the tactile feel and I feel that my thoughts flow differently than when I type. I’ve only discovered fountain pens in the last six months or so and adore how they have changed my writing. As a left handed writer it’s always been a struggle to find pens that don’t skip and slow my writing down, often in the middle of a particularly inspired moment, fountain pens solved that problem entirely. The best thing that has come of discovering fountain pens though is how they turned my daughter from a reluctant writer who would cry at the thought of even having to write a short sentence into a prolific journal filler. In the few months since I got her a pen of her own shes managed to fill out two A6 Leuchtturms with her observations and thoughts.

Fountain pens have gotten me back in to journaling which is so good for my mental health. It makes me slow down and just enjoy the pen, ink, and paper. My time spent watching your videos is so quiet and peaceful. It’s a wonderful reminder to enjoy the little things.

Fountain pens started for me as a distraction from a difficult time in my life - losing my mom and my job/career, and then the scary time at the start of the pandemic. But because of my interest, they led me to back to using paper and journaling, something that I'd done as a teenager but given up on. Journaling and planning has improved my life, my health and my perspective in so many ways that I can't believe that it all started with just a little pen.

I recently discovered the joy of fountain pens last September (I started with Pilot Kakuno) and I tried them enough to gift myself my very first Kaweco on my birthday in December. I used to never gave fountain pen a second look (I collected gel pens though), but it is true, you HAVE to try them first and see how they change your life (in writing). Then I discovered more channels that makes podcasts about pens. Penss??? Literally over an hour long discussion about pens?? I used to laugh at them but now I schedule them in my planners - using my fountain pen of course. I love my fountain pens, they make me want to write more. Sometimes I just hold them, uncap them, and itching to write something. (Btw, I purchased the spare double broad nib for my Kaweco, I LOVE IT! definitely not something for everyday writing, but it makes a beautiful nib for headers and titles)

At this time in my life, I am 76 years old, I felt I needed to let go of all the anxiety and be grateful for that life just as it is. I discovered journaling and that led to fountain pens as a way to express myself. The feel of putting that pen and ink to paper is peaceful and calming. Every day I use different pens that I have inked up with different inks and just put my thoughts, ideas, and memories to paper. Who knew how many different pens and inks were out there? I only wish I had discovered the occupation sooner in my life. I encourage everyone to take a bit of their day to relax and see the world in a different way. As the saying goes, "Let it all go". My handwriting in grade school was almost illegible. My Mom got me a Parker pen before I started seventh grade. My Mother and I are both left handed and her handwriting was so beautiful and expressive . She would help me with the writing portion of my homework. It helped but never enough to come close to hers. We both wrote straight up, no hook. The one thing I enjoy most about writing with a fountain pen is the feeling of “time distortion “ that I feel when using one. My focus is on the page as my mind thinks about the things that I want to write. The ambient noise seems to fade away and am truly alone with my thoughts and my self. I'm an old man, 85. When I started school I used a dip and write steel nib in a wooden holder and Schaffer ink with the well in the neck. I've been Journaling since 1998. I've used wooden pencils, mechanical pencils, ball points - stick pens, retracts, and fountain pen look-alikes. Two years ago I bought a $12 fountain, then a glass pen and then a $70 Wordsworth-Black that looses its prime and I use as a dip and write. :-( My favorite ink is Noodler'sApache Gold. I had to learn to cursive all over again. I follow you because of your creative journals. :-)

Hi! Thank you for your lovely videos. You inspire me so. The fountain pen is a tactile, anti-screen-time, antique tool that transports me back to a simpler time. Re-discovering fountain pens over the last 6 months has connected me to a generation or two behind me with my mother or other elder folks commenting on my pen choice. Thanks for this in depth look at the Kaweco pens. I have four, two plastic, one aluminum, one copper. I’ve enjoyed how well they work and how consistently they put down a line. Fountain pens have changed my life for the better as I moved from a mostly digital world back to an analog one. They are beautiful, practical, and bring me joy. And that is a lot.

I’m two months new to fountain pens and writing. I wanted to up my handwriting when I send thank you notes to people who buy photo prints from me. I’m re learning cursive and practicing daily on a pilot Metropolitan. Digesting lots of KZfaq and slowly finding myself hooked as I was into photography. I started writing to do lists and movie taglines for daily practice and have recently jotted down a rare thought or two. I hope in a year my handwriting is more legible and professional. I love all things old fashioned, so when I tired using a fountain pen for the first time, I knew there was no going back. I used to hate writing but using a pen that writes effortlessly and is high quality actuat makes writing fun.

I think Fountain pens have made me more mindful when writing. Sometimes when expressing my emotions through writing I tend to do it quickly without being aware of what I'm actually doing until I'm done. Choosing a pen, inking it, testing it and feeling the weight of it makes me appreciate the whole process. It's definitely changed the way I write and it's made me be more aware of the things I write.

Thank you for the comparison! Fountain pens have always been an interest of mine, but they became a real serious passion during the pandemic lockdown when they helped me detox from my digital lifestyle and get back into journaling, for my own self care, in a way that’s tactile and cathartic. I also discovered for the first time the entire community of hobbyists that shared this excitement, which in and of itself was a wonderful discovery!

Fountain pens have made me more persistent in my note-taking, which helps me to focus. In more recent times, it has also led to having some amazing pen pals, to keeping a journal in addition to my planner, and also sketching in ink. They have also had an impact on my wallet 😆

Writing in general has always been a way for me to clarify my thoughts, and get things organized so to speak. Page after page I've felt more in control of the way I think, and feel. While Fountain pens started out as just a tool for writing they've slowly turned into memories of times, places, people, and experiences all at the tip of my fingers. It's also an appreciation of something small, and at times forgettable, but extremely important. A piece of history that showed mankind's want to record and share information. Whether for Education, History, or most importantly Communication, we would not be where we are today with out them. Hi my Tucson friend! I love reading all these comments from pen and journal lovers and knowing you brought them (us) all together. I began playing with fountain pens in the early '70s, when you could buy a Sheaffer for under two bucks -- but being left-handed, I didn't have much luck! Then 2 or 3 years later I bought a Cross fine point and managed to wrestle it into submission for my college years. I have since moved on to many others (current collection numbers 46). Curious that married to a retired Navy officer and being a SAR pilot, my two favorite pens are a Sailor and a Pilot, extra fine nibs both. But I also own four Kawecos that get their fair share of journal work. Thank you for sharing your life and world with all of us!

Fountain pens have opened many doors for me...I have rediscovered my love of letter writing. The ceremony of sitting down at my little writing desk in the late afternoon light with my favourite pens and writing paper, really makes me slow down and reconnect with myself and my daily life. Hi Alicia, Your channel and a dear friend of mine, inspired me to try fountain pens. I now have several vintage pens and a bunch of newer ones. Last year, I learned how to replace the ink sacks on vintage pens and would find time to tinker with these old pens. I found that helped me escape from from the stresses of caring for my 80 year old mother who has Parkinson’s. I also love writing letters, journalling, practicing my penmanship and trying new inks.

Fountain pens have helped me stay connected during the last two years. I started writing letters again and journaling for the first time. The journaling helped keep me sane and gave me a creative outlet.

I jumped down the fountain pen rabbit hole in 2020 and have not looked back. Using a fountain allows me to relax my grip and truly enjoy the tactile experience of putting pen to paper. I love experimenting with different inks and have now acquired close to 12 pens ranging from my first ( a Lamy Safari) to a gorgeous premium Sailor with a 21k nib. I have 3 Kaweco AL Sports (vibrant violet, brown, red AC) and love them all. My confidence has grown as I've learned to disassemble my TWSBY ECO RG, and experience the various nibs of the Draco and most recently an Opus 88 eye dropper model to name a few. And for laughs the chunky Moon man found its way to me. What a wonderful experience and all at the ripe young age of 68 during a global pandemic. Love your channel.

I was at a tipping point with my physical and mental health during the height of the pandemic. I discovered fountain pens at that time and it helped me slow down and realize how many blessings I had in my life. I'm able to take more time and reflect on small nuances that I never saw before. And for the first time in decades, I'm writing daily. It is a catharsis.

Hi Alicia - I look forward to moments in my day when I can grab my fountain pen to capture a thought, an idea or design. Using it urges me to be fully present, often times quieter too, so I can listen to the pen as it glides on my paper. 😉It provides me comfort, especially when life around me seems so fast-moving, uncertain or overwhelming.

Writing with a fountain pen is akin to writing with a living organism. Each are similar but different! even apparently identical nibs from the same manufacturer are often different so again your individuality and that of the pen can shine. Very helpful comparison, thank you! Fountain pens, to me, are a tool that enhances the ritual of writing. A slowing down of the hand and mind. They’re less wasteful. There’s a ritual to them; cleaning, filling, maintaining. I love the pace they offer in all aspects.

Ever since I started to learn to write in elementary school, I have owned a fountain pen. It was mandatory to write with it up to 5th grade. And even after that (yes even in high school) I had a fountain pen. I just always loved the sound the pen makes while writing with it. And the smoothness compared to failing ballpoint pens, back in the day there were no gel pens, helps me write neater too. And I love to switch out different color inks. The whole combination of crinkly paper and a smooth fountain pen can give me tingles. I hope I never stop using fountain pens. Thank you for sharing your love of fountain pens with us!

I always liked to take notes and write by hand in different contexts. Taking notes in courses, writing down work meetings, writing ideas, solving equations, doing doodles... Great review. Watching what people are doing with fountain pens made me take the leap into this wonderful tool. I’m writing everyday now and learning how to incorporate their use into art. This might sound like something small to most, for me it’s huge to have something that makes me excited about doing things with color. Fountain pens change how connected I feel to my writing. I only discovered them this year (2022) and I was immediately taken with the tactile feel, the way the ink lays down on the paper, and all the different factors that change the performance of the pen. They appeal to me both creatively and as technical tools. I've been trying to find as many ways to use them in my life. And in doing so, I rediscovered journaling after decades of having no journaling practice. The physical act of writing things down on paper feels like a more intimate expression of my thoughts. But there is addtionally something inexplicably different with fountain pens than other pens, much more than the mere mechanics.

I have rediscovered my passion for writing with your wonderful videos and love of fountain pens. Quite frankly, the serenity of a fountain pen to paper is so much different than a regular pen. The craft is kinesthetic, artistic, and peaceful. The strokes of a fountain pen are like an artist paint brush. I feel that life slows down a bit when using them. Fountain pens are my escape. I love getting lost with pens especially when you get the perfect combination of pen, ink, and paper. I have been using and collecting pens my entire life and started collecting and restoring vintage pens for the last 12 years. Submerging myself into the world of fountain pens really helped me through some difficult times. They are so beautiful, individual (even if you got the same model with the same nib twice), you can get so much variety through inks, etc. The filling mechanisms are also just lovely details. I love how fountain pen lovers can really enjoy such a small item to the fullest! And I also found your videos through fountain pens, they are so calming and listening to your mindset is so freeing!

I've always been someone who loved pens. It wasn't until college when my German language professor introduced me to fountain pens that I even realized they were still available. I'd seen the inexpensive ones at the craft and hobby stores, but never anything considered a fine writing instrument. Since then, several of my students have taken interest in them, and several of my coworkers as well. It's also been very rewarding seeing some friends who were already familiar with fountain pens take another look. Recently, a good friend who grew up in Germany using fountain pens showed interest in my collection. I brought it out to show her, and gifted her a Kaweco Sport. She was so thrilled because it's the very pen she grew up using in Germany, and now it's her daily use pen. I'm currently trying to decide whether to gift my German professor a Lamy 2000 or a Kaweco Supra, they are both very nice and I don't think he has either. For me, it's become a conversation piece, a hobby, and my collection has grown a bit during COVID. Currently, I use mine to grade my students' reports and since they have rekindled my enjoyment of writing, I am handwriting a novel. We'll see if it's good enough to get interest in a couple years once I've written enough material to have a coherent story.

I've just discovered fountain pens a few months ago and it has totally changed my entire view on journaling. I always struggled to journey regularly before until I've started entering the world of fountain pens! Now I journal twice a day or even three times daily every single day. Fountain pens have opened a whole new world of journaling for me, and I've discovered a community with like-minded people and I enjoy and look forward to journaling every day. This is so nice of you to do! I get more joy out of the people I know who have bought fountain pens because they liked mine, and seeing one of my young nieces put her damn phone down for a while and do some writing and drawing with the few starter pens I’ve given her. I thought it might be a phase in the beginning, but I found her a fountain pen pal in Eastern Europe and she has stuck with it, and has so much fun writing back and forth….they send each other little gifts and mementoes, the kinds of things exclusive to their own countries, and they share things about the two very different cultures they live in. Too many kids are only communicating through their phones today, so to see her excitement when a letter arrives in the mailbox!…I just love it. Wouldn’t it be nice if this became a lifelong friendship? I would probably give this pen to her, as her first nicer pen, to encourage her to keep writing.

Fountain pens have made the act of writing so much more fun for me again. They’ve reignited my love for journaling in a new way - a way that’s more about nurturing my mental health than about making something that looks nice. Just writing, when it’s with a pen and an ink I love, can warm my heart and soothe my soul, and I think that’s amazing. Especially during a time when I haven’t been able to see people I love or go places that make me smile, making the things I can do from home feel more special has been important to me and fountain pens do that - they make writing and journaling feel more special.

I got my first 'fancy' pen because of your videos. Now I pen letters to my brother with my Kaweco Brass. It is a lost art and I thank you for keeping it relevant.

I have dabbled in fountain pens for a couple years but really invested in the hobby at the start of the pandemic. I was journaling every day to cope with the stress of the unprecedented times we were experiencing and it was so soothing to try new pens and inks to keep my mind busy. Fountain pens opened up calligraphy for me by giving me portable, precise tools and so much enjoyment in improving my skills. They opened up my journaling and writing by making it easier physically for me to write and giving me options for pens, nibs, and inks. I even learned a different handwriting style by practicing every day for a year so it became second nature. Fountain pens have deeply enriched my life, and the supportive fountain pen community has been an added bonus, especially in the last two years. I had a rough time when I discovered fountain pens, almost three or four years ago. I never cared for ballpoint pens or rollerballs, but with fountain pens I could write about my bad experiences and losses in a therapeutic way. I have always enjoyed writing and stationery. Bringing fountain pens into the picture about 4 years ago only heightened that interest, and added a joy of exploring inks, different nibs and even adding watercolors to the mix. Life would be a lot darker (especially as a healthcare worker these last two years) without the opportunity to escape every so often for some precious moments to pause amidst the chaos of life and enjoy some quiet moments to write with a fine fountain pen on some lovely paper.

I discovered fountain pens during 2020. It was through your videos, and I think it has helped me weather these last few years sanely! My journaling practice flourished and I’ve recently incorporated the use of fountain pens into my art practice as well. Fountain pens have made me a better communicator. With myself, through journaling, and with others, through letter writing and my art. It may seem silly, but I’m so thankful to have found this “hobby” and the welcoming community within it!

I’ve had some fountain pens for many years but had gotten out of the habit of using them and writing for fun, in general. Since the pandemic, I began looking for another outlet - particularly as we are also in the middle of fertility treatment (which has been a long old journey). I found a level of catharsis through writing, journalling, and learning to sketch/paint. I’ve never been a creative person - I’m much more analytical - although all my family are artistic in different ways. I always felt like the odd one out. Having re-discovered the joy of writing has been such a blessing and has helped me to consider what I really want out of life & to refocus on the important things - family, mindfulness, all things analogue, and enjoying every day we have in the best way we can.

Writing with a fountain pen is firstly a way to discover channels and videos like yours! And it allows me to be calm, find peace, find myself in a certain way. Thanks for your great work!

When my first kiddo was born, I struggled to balance motherhood, work, and myself. I found that journaling was one way I could refill my cup, but I would keep putting it off for other things. I finally realized that fountain pens, with the tactile feel and trying new inks, gave me the extra motivation I needed to stop and take a break.

I got into fountain pens because I wanted to play with ink colors in my journaling - I had no idea how much this would add to my life! There is so much joy, fun, and tactile satisfaction with using fountain pens. It is a connection to a very simple pleasure that is low-tech yet completely immersive. I find myself looking for new ways to write just to use my pens. I have no one in my local life that understands this interest, let alone has ever used a fountain pen, so finding a channel like yours is so refreshing and I love watching your videos!

Fountain pens have brought me so much joy,friendships ,incredible conversations even with strangers:) The want and ability to write lovely notes or letters to people who could use an encouraging thought or two. I had been very isolated for years dealing with cancer and many surgeries…Fountain pens and people in the fountain pen world are in many parts of my daily life now. Even my 92-year-old mother enjoys my fountain pens:) and watching you has brought me back to journaling. Fountain pens journaling getting hold of other fountain pen friends is an every day joy I have now.

Before I found fountain pens my journaling was sparse and uneventful but now I look forward to my daily writing with new inks and lovely pens. I have jumped down the rabbit hole not knowing where I would end up but I'm happy that I made the leap.

I’m an educational artist that prefers pen and ink with watercolor as my mediums of choice. Fountain pens and their nib pliability have been the most fun for me to experiment with expression and mood. You haven’t seen sci-art till you see it done with an interesting nib and a couple of splashes of watercolor to spark some life into something you may never have given a second thought to before! For me, my art is a way to teach people of all ages that nature is one heck of a muse. The voice of my art is my fountain pens. Add the Kaweco durability to the mix and you have a strong, dependable tool that can hack nature walks with you for life.

I was really looking forward to this review and it did not disappoint! I didn’t even know that Kaweco did a premium nib until you got your box from them. I LOVE how easy it is to change the nibs on these pens (really, I have a huge crush on Kaweco...) Collecting fountain pens is a hobby that I have fallen in love with during the pandemic. I started out with a Lamy Safari 2 years ago and now I have about 20 pens that range from $10 Cross pens to much pricier Pelikans. I love them all. I am a lifelong journaler and notebook addict but fountain pens bring me immeasurable joy. I like to write with them, clean them, doodle and putter with them - I can’t imagine life without them. In a time of enormous suffering and loss across the world, I have written more in this period than in any other of my life. I don’t know that it would have been the same as if I were using the gel pens I used to buy by the box. All of that writing has helped me process all that has happened in the last 24 months. I really think they have changed my life for the better and I am grateful for that.

Fountain pens have completely changed my relationship to writing. I always loved stationery and writing utensils, but only used them for art. I used to never write anything by hand because regular ballpoints would require too much pressure to write with, and other writing utensils, even the ones I liked, were not really that exciting to use for writing. Deciding to try out a fountain pen was pretty random, but I figured it would allow me to write without any pressure whenever I needed to write something. Well, I ended up loving using a fountain pen so much that I started journaling and writing a lot, just for the sake of writing and enjoying the experience. Then I started exploring other fountain pens, nibs, papers, and inks. I never imagined I would enjoy writing so much, but it's become such a natural and pleasant part of my life now. Journaling helps me work through my thoughts and feelings and using a planner helps me organize my life. I always had trouble sticking to journaling or using a planner whenever I tried them out in the past, but with fountain pens it's always exciting.

Besides making my handwriting better, there's a lot of joy in using a fountain pen. I feel like it really makes me reflect on what I want to say before I put pen to paper and yet at the same time once I do begin writing it's so easy to switch to more stream of consciousness writing as well. Feeling the weight of a well-crafted, thoughtfully designed instrument in my hand makes my day a little bit brighter, and sometimes it's the simple pleasures in life that make life worth living 😊

Working in tech I was glued to screen most of the time. I realised its effects during covid and decided to get a little more analog. A desire to be organized lead to bullet journaling that led to the purchase of my very first fountain pen. I haven't looked back since. Been 2+ years of using fountain pen as an adult, used a few times during school years. The obsession of fountain pens and writing now helps me keep a healthy balance between digital and analog world.

My fountain pens have given me a reason (and in some cases a ready excuse) to spend time in my notebooks and to be more committed to my journals. I relish the chance to fill out a mundane form, or to make a list. And the pen I bought to get back into fountain pens about a year ago was a gift to myself as a gesture of self-care at a time when all my energies were focused on my mother in her final few weeks. Fountain pens have brought journaling and letter writing back into my life on a regular basis that has become theraputic. My boyfriend bought my my fisrt gift fountain pen for my birthday last year (Sailor Pro Gear Slim MF) and i have been writing him love letters with it ever since. My hobby for collecting really grew in 2021 and i went from having a couple of Preppy's that i bought many years ago, to having one of nearly every m,ajor brand and some in multiple nib sizes. Your videos on inks and your favourite pens has helped my collection to grow somewhat. The feeling of writing with a well made pen is second to none and I love when people want to spark a conversation with me because i am using "an old fashioned pen".

I got into fountain pens at the same time I was going through several diagnoses, life transitions, and family things. The itch to discover more inks, nibs, and paper kept me coming back to writing. To write write write and work through things, document, plan. To be grateful, to connect with myself, to be angry or *say bad words* or complain. Fountain pen communities gave me a opportunity to obsess over something and escape real life in those brief moments of in between.

I am so grateful for discovering fountain pen. It opened up a big door for me to the world of writing! I begin my first daily journal in 2018 and it been helping with my mental health especially in the past years. I have been interested in fountain pens ever since i was a young school boy. I love the way that you can change inks and the enjoy the many colours available and the fact that you are constantly recycling and not using a product that would normally be thrown away after use. For me there is a fascination in fountain pens that i find hard to explain but i love to get into my own corner whether it be at home or in a cosy cafe and write with my fountain pen and enter my own private world which is so relaxing and I’m giving something back to the world using an instrument that I’m only a custodian of and will hopefully go on for many years.

I used to use fountain pens 25 years ago (as part of school curriculum in Mongolia) and never used it since. I recently inherited my grandpa's fountain pen and started loving it! I found that using fountain pen and writing is the quickest way to relieve stress. Due to it's effortless glide on the paper, the pen itself disappears and it's just my thoughts and the ink on the paper. It also opened up a side of me that appreciates small things in life. Oh the joy of watching the ink pool up and dry!

Thank you for this video. It was great just seeing the adjustments to how you write with each nib size. Regarding fountain pens, I have my niece to thank for my nosedive into the hobby. She pointed out how they were better for the environment but I never imagined that I would fall in love. I draw, write my inky thoughts, take notes on customer calls at work, and I am going to try writing a book for the very first time ever. Using fountain pens, oddly enough, has taken me out of my screens and into the present. It leaves me with an outlet of expression that I never thought I needed. Oh, and I returned the favor and gifted my niece, the biologist (who I am convinced will save the world), with a Kaweco fountain pen and pencil. The latter was recommended to use out in the field.

I grew up in a country where you learn to write with fountain pens. So for me fountain pens are the first ever experience with writing. I wasn’t an active user all my life tho. With the pandemic it accelerated because I started writing and journalling more. The smooth feeling of writing with a fountain pen, the lowered strain, and the fact that each pen is an individual really drew me into this hobby!

As a longtime crafter, I have always appreciated fine tools. If something is worthy of our time, it’s also worthy of lovely and functional tools with which to complete our tasks. And a fountain pen is no different. For me it makes something as mundane as a grocery list, a thoughtful experience. Our days, especially the last couple of years, have been filled with more everyday experiences than exciting journeys, and it’s just another way to give honor and appreciation to common moments, and be still and notice the value in them.
