i bought myself one of these brass models quite some time ago, it has a lovely patina now and i love using it, nice and weighty. my nib was a little on the dry side when i got it but that was easily sorted out. it's very rewarding to see darken with the passing of time and through regular use, i love it! ;)

Great review as always. The guys at Kaweco must be frustraited to not have checked this one before sending it to you. But at least now we saw this issue and are aware of it's possibility. Thanks

I like weight of the Brass and the robust nature of the Brass - not vulnerable to pocket damage.

I've tried a Kaweco Sport raw AL and Brass, they wrote rather well, but in writing they felt top-heavy, I need to post it, as almost everybody. I bought the original plastic version with EF nib at Fontoplumo. I asked them to ink it up and fine tune the nib and they did an excellent job on that. Mine writes like a breeze! And I am so surprised by how useful it is to have a comfortable pen so small it fits in my frontpocket easily. I use it at least three times a day.

Kaweco make a mini piston converter which fits this pen. £4.50 in the UK.

i'd like to point out that in Europe you don't always get the Kaweco pens in a tin box. Kaweco Sport and Kaweco Classic fountain pens come in a cheap disposable black cardboard box (similar to the Noodler's pen box) whereas Kaweco AL Sport, Stonewashed, Brass and Calligraphy set do come in a tin box. This means if you're ordering from amazon.co.uk or any other european amazon or specialized retailer this is a thing to keep in mind if you don't want to be disappointed by what you get in the mail. i thought it would be a needed information for those customers who fall in love with kaweco sport pens because of the tin box.

I have adjusted problem nibs by writing over 2000 grit wet-dry " sand paper". Writing the entire alphabet, upper & lower case, plus the quick brown fox etc. a few times always fixed the problems. I presently plan to cut one of my K. nibs to an Italic nib. Italic is my fav. cut no matter the width of nib. It gives best character to the writing.

I also had a problem with the nib on the AL Sport that I bought (medium). Took some work to get it to write at all.

I'm still waiting for the Kaweco CU sport. They make a copper lilliput, and a brass sport (which I own). All they have to do is take a slight pivot to bring out a sport in copper. My god I'd absolutely go crazy over that! The Rose Gold AL Sport just made me mad. It looks a lot like fresh copper, but it's an anodized finish on an aluminum pen >:-( I'd also like to see a bronze version as well!

I love so much Kaweco pens when they work :)) I bought seven until now and three of them had “baby bottom”. I fixed one of them by using emery. I got refund the other one but I stucked with the last one. I want to buy all the colors but it’s a problematic pen. Kaweco isn’t cheap in my country and there is no official distributor in here.If I get a pen which isn’t write properly it’s just my problem unfortunately. It’s really bad because it’s really good pen when it’s working.

A bugbear of mine is that any time I ask to try a pen it's just a dip test. Baby's bottom or other flow issues can't be spotted that way

Great review. I have the same pen and it came with the exact same problem - the nib is unusable. At first I thought the tines werent spread enough, but spreading them slightly (using your press-down method) only aggravated the problem. How did you fix the flow issue with yours?

What baffles me is that the brass ones cost so much more than the synthetic materials. But it's not like brass is a precious metal. How can Jinhao make so many different pen barrels out of brass for 1% of the cost? The cost of this pen should be closer to the other models in the same form factor.

+Magnus Hedemark Like anything else, part of the price goes to the fact that you are buying from a fairly well known company. You also get a bock nib with these pens, and although this one was a lemon, Kaweco is fairly well renowned for offering smooth, well tuned nibs, from a well known nib manufacturer. I would also imagine the design of this pen would be somewhat difficult to manufacture in brass as there is that hexagonal cap pattern and some fairly precise threading. The Jinhao pens you mention simply use a brass inner barrel, the section is usually made of some other metal or plastic, and they do not utilize a screw cap. So, there is a lot more machining required to produce the Kaweco not to mention the Jinhao pens you are purchasing are made in humongous quantities and being sold through a third party at a further discount.

And the "price" of a cheapo pen like the Jinhao is ultimately paid for by someone, probably the workers who made it under bad conditions ...

Actually, to be fair to Jinhao, everything I have read about their facility and business structure actually seems to be quite impressive. I actually wondered the same thing and did a bit of research on the company. I don't know about the pay scale or anything like that, but based on what I've seen (internet pictures) of the factory and the company policy, I think there are much worse places to work in China.

I also picked up a classic sport clear model.. it runs dry all the time and skips it was is so bad it just sits in my bag and doesnt get used all.. I really wanted to like this pen for the price and size but the writing experience is horrible for me.. u said u fixed it.. how did u do that? Thanks for your reviews I got back into pens after watching several reviews of different pens my first pen I bought about 3 years ago was the lepine midnight purple fountain pen you reviewed it is a awesome pen and writes great!

Stephen, do steel nibs really not last as long as gold nibs or is this a myth? I can't imagine the corrosion being beyond repair, and the tipping material can obviously be replaced.

I bought this pen 2 years ago, fine nib, got a baby bottom so terrible the pen never wrote. I contacted kaweco, they kindly sent me a nib replacement which had a baby bottom as well. I fiddled with one of them and a nail polishing file (thinner than the finest sandpaper, it's used to make fingernails shiny and glossy) and managed to make it write, the line is more on the medium broad side than fine now tho. Kinda disappointed

It disappoints me everytime, when the cap comes off, and I see that the grip section is made of metal. (But that is just personal. I know there are lot's of people who don't mind.) I'm glad to see that the measurements part of the review is gone. I Always skipped that part, to be honest.
